2016 PARAEDUCATOR CONFERENCE REGISTRATION BROCHURE
Action for Chapter Presidents: Inform members about this event and encourage your districts to fund classified employees to attend this valuable skills-based training; or consider subsidizing attendance at the chapter level.
A. SUBJECT MATTER
Asyouknow,CSEA’s19thAnnualParaeducatorConferenceisdesignedwithparaeducatorsspecificallyinmind, but open to all CSEA members and others within the educational community. This Conference offers skills-specificclassesthatcrossoverintootherclassificationshavingdailycontactwithstudents.Co-hostedbytheStateDepartmentofEducation,the2016ConferencewillbeheldattheOntarioConventionCenterApril 12-14.
The registration brochure contains a partial list of classes that will be offered at the Conference (more classes are in the planning stages). A more complete schedule and list of classes will be on the CSEA website in the early Spring (www.csea.com/paraconference).
Possible Funding Sources for Districts:
General Title I Funds – To support ongoing training and professional development to assist teachers and paraprofessionals [Sections 1114(b)(1)(D) & 1115(c)(I)(F) of Title I]. Title I – Schools and districts identified as needing improvement must also reserve funds for professional development and these funds may be used for training paraprofessionals [Section 1116(c)(7)(A)(iii)].
Title II, Part A – Improving Teacher Quality State Grants funds may be used to provide professional development that “improves the knowledge of teachers and principals, and in appropriate cases, paraprofessionals concerning core academic subjects and effective instructional practices to improve student academic achievement [Section 2123(a)(3)(A)&(B)].
Title III, Part A – The English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement, and Academic Achievement Act, authorized local education agencies to use formula grant funds for professional development of teachers and other instructional personnel providing instruction to students needing English language acquisition and language enhancement [Section 3115(c)(2)].
Senate Bill (SB) 590 – Relates to professional development for classified employees effective Janu-ary 1, 2014. This law requires local educational agencies (LEAs) to consider the training needs of

classified school employees whenever funds are expended for the professional development of any school site staff. The purpose of the training would be to update the skills of classified employees to learn best practices in a variety of areas, including but not limited to, student achievement, student and campus safety, and special education.
The 2015-16 Budget Act provides $3.2 billion in one time funding to reimburse local education agencies for state mandated costs. This discretionary funding can be used to fund professional de-velopment and investments such as Common Core implementation.
The registration fee is $109 per person (includes all class instruction, materials and two continental break-fasts). The pre-registration deadline is April 1, 2016.

CSEA offers up to $250 subsidies to financially assist members with opportunities that connect them to the union, the community, and/or to students. (Applications will be accepted beginning January 13 and must be postmarked no later than February 27. Applications are reviewed as they are submitted on a first come, first serve basis.)
