2009 WOMEN’S SEASON OUTLOOKBEARS TO RELY ON

DIVERSE TALENT TO RETURN TO NCAAs

The Golden Bears are what some might categorize as an enigma as they enter the 2009 dual season.

Although Cal loses one of its strongest senior classes in school history, it returns some of the most important pieces of a team that went all the way to the NCAA championship last year match and adds some major fi repower with its newcomers. The Bears feature players from all areas of the spectrum with three seniors and three freshmen, not to mention two of the most remarkable sophomores in women’s col-legiate tennis. With such a diverse array of talent on the roster, Cal looks to achieve balance as it makes another run to the NCAA championship.

Second-year head coach Amanda Au-gustus looks to take it one step further as the Golden Bears return to the court after experiencing one of their most success-ful seasons in program history. The 2008 squad advanced further than any squad in program history. The Bears fi nished the regular season with a 6-2 record in Pac-10 play (third place) and won the Anson S. Th-acher team trophy, awarded to the team with the most points in both singles and doubles at the Pac-10 Championships.

Cal completed last season with a 21-6 overall record and ranked No. 3 in the fi nal ITA poll. The Bears lose the services of two ITA All-Americans with the departure of Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano. But senior Claire Ilcinkas (Paris, France) and sophomore Marina Cossou (Azereix, France) each earned singles All-America honors a year ago and return to help lead a young but experienced group of Bears. Babos, Ilcinkas and Cossou were also named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team. As a team, the Bears laid claim to the Newmark award for posting the top team grade-point average among all 27 of Cal’s intercollegiate athletic teams.

Although the squad is small, the Bears will be able to look to the leadership of three seniors this season. Marion Ravelojaona (Paris, France) returns for a fi fth year at Berkeley after suffering a knee injury a year ago that cut short her season. She brings

74 career singles victories to the lineup and adds 62 doubles wins. Ravelojaona held up an 8-2 record in fall tournaments and won the Blue Flight singles title at the Cal Nike Invitational. She hopes to return to the form she held when she won the 2006 ASU Thunderbird Invitational and reached a career-high ranking of No. 34 to open her junior dual season.

Cal’s two true seniors have quietly be-come forces to be reckoned with, as bothBojana Bobusic (Perth, Australia) and Ilcinkas enter their fi nal season in Berkeley each with more than 80 career singles wins and 75 doubles wins. Bobusic advanced to the singles fi nal at the ITA Northwest Re-gional Championship and earned automatic entry to the ITA National Indoor Champion-ships in the fall. Her 32 singles wins from a year ago ranked second on the team as she went 7-1 in dual match singles play.

A 2008 ITA Singles All-American, Ilcinkas led all Bears with a team-high 35 singles wins a year ago and brings 87 career vic-tories into her fi nal dual season. She also begins her fi nal semester at Cal just 11 doubles victories from the century mark. Ilcinkas and teammate Cossou combine to form one of the most fearsome doubles teams in the country as they combined for 26 wins last year and fi nished the season ranked No. 58 in the nation.

The Bears will play the 2009 season without a junior on the roster but a strong sophomore class hopes to fi ll that void. Cossou earned ITA Singles All-America honors as a freshman and completed her fi rst year at Cal with the No. 9 ranking. She tied for second place on the team with 32 singles victo-ries, playing predominantly from the second court. The Bears will look to Cossou to contribute from the top court this spring as she won in fi ve of her appearances there a year ago.

As the o ther sophomore on the roster, Mari Andersson (Båstad, Sweden) has waited patiently to show what she can do. After arriving in Berkeley a year ago, Andersson sat out a year and will hit the court ready to prove herself as she brings the ex-perience of winning 21 Swedish Champion-ships to the Bears.

The Bears welcome three true freshmen in 2009. A local product, Stephany Chang(San Jose, Calif.) stepped in and won 11 singles matches in fall tournaments. Jana Juricova (Piestany, Slovak Republic) ar-rived in Berkeley last fall and took onlook-ers by storm as she posted a team-high 17 singles victories and won the Saint Mary’s Invitational singles title. She later went on to win the ASU Thunderbird Invitational singles title without dropping a single set of play. Juricova will be looked to for immediate contributions as the Bears enter the dual season. Rounding out the freshman class is Catalina Visico (Long Beach, Calif.), the younger sister of former Bear Cristina Visico.

On the sidelines, Zsuzsanna Fodorreturns as a full-time assistant coach after serving one year in a volunteer capacity. Fodor was a two-time All-American as a player for the Bears. Cordell Ho remains with the Bears, returning to his role as a volunteer assistant coach in 2009.

The Bears open the spring by hosting the Cal Winter Invitational at Hellman Ten-nis Complex from Jan. 16-18. Two weeks later, Long Beach State, Washington and North Carolina State visit Berkeley for the ITA Kick-off Weekend on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The Bears head to Madison, Wisc. for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships from Feb. 13-16 before opening Pac-10 play at home against Washington (Feb. 27) and

Washington State (Feb. 28). After facing rival Stanford on the Farm on March 7, Cal hosts perennial power Baylor on March 10. The Bears head to USC (Mar. 27) and UCLA (Mar. 28) before closing out the season with fi ve straight matches at home. Cal

concludes the regular season at Hellman against Stan-

ford on April 18. The Pac-10 Champion-ships will take place at Ojai, Calif. from April 23-26.

2008 SEASON RECAP

GOLDEN BEARS2008 CAMPAIGN REACHES

NCAA FINALS

The 2008 California women’s tennis team, led by first-year head coach Amanda Augustus,

advanced further than any other squad in program history as the Golden Bears went all the way to the NCAA champi-onship match. Cal fi nished the regular season with a 6-2 record in Pac-10 play (third place) and won the Anson S. Thacher team trophy, awarded to the team with the most points in both singles and doubles at the Pac-10 Championships.

The Bears opened up the NCAA tournament by hosting Army and No. 27 LSU in the first and second rounds. Cal post-ed two resounding 4-0 victories to ad-vance to the round of 16 and made the trip to Tulsa, Okla. to play on the courts of the Mi-chael D. Case Ten-nis Center. There, the Bears put up a 4-3 win over No. 9 Duke before taking out top-ranked Northwestern, 4-2, in the NCAA quarterfi nal. Cal stayed strong and pulled out a 4-3 victory over No. 5 Baylor in the national semifi nal before falling to No. 7 UCLA in the NCAA championship fi nal.

Cal completed the season with a 21-6 overall record and ranked No. 3 in the fi nal ITA poll. The Bears were honored with four ITA All-American selections. Seniors Susie Babos

and Stephanie Kusano each received All-America distinc-tion in doubles while junior Claire Ilcinkas and sophomore Marina Cossou each earned singles All-America honors. Babos, Ilcinkas and Cossou were also named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team. Kusano received All-Pac-10 honorable mention along with senior Cristina Visico. Babos was also honored as the ITA Northwest Region’s Senior Player of the Year—Cal’s sixth player to win the award—as she won her third individual crown, claiming the singles title at the 2007 All-American Championship.

In the classroom, four Bears made the Pac-10 All-Academic team, led by Ilcinkas on the fi rst team. Babos and Kusano received second-team honors and junior Bojana Bobusic received All-Academic honorable mention. As a team, the Bears laid claim to the Newmark award for posting the top team grade-point average among all 27 of Cal’s intercolle-giate athletic teams.

The Golden Bears captured the Thacher Cup at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships for earning the most points in the singles and doubles tournaments.

A TRIBUTE TO JAN BROGANLONGTIME CAL

COACH SERVES UP RETIREMENT

An eight-time conference coach of the year, Jan Brogan amassed more than 500 victories while guiding

the California women’s tennis program for 29 seasons.

Brogan’s direction made the Golden Bears a perennial power, earning 19 Top-10 finishes and making 26 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In her fi nal season, Cal fi nished the 2006-07 campaign with a 23-7 record, a trip to the NCAA Championship Semifi nal and a No. 5 ranking.

Under her tutelage, the Bears had 61 All-Americans, 19 fi rst-team All-Pac-10 players and fi ve conference players of the year.
