The BeginningThe gold rush started because James Marshall had a

work crew building a mill for John Sutter. James Marshall found a few golden nuggets when he started building the mill. This started one of the greatest migrations of people in history. The mill is currently known as Sutter’s mill.

Forms of TravelThere was four common ways to travel

to California during the Gold Rush. The most common was by boat leaving the San Francisco Bay and go up the Sacramento River to Sacramento. Second, you could travel by covered wagons from wherever you were in the country. Third, trains began to be a way you could travel in America. Finally, you could travel by horse. Horse was another option but it was less common because you can’t carry as much gold back home with you.

Natives of California

Around 300,000 Native Americans live in California until the Gold Rush. This is because the Gold Rush brought violence and many new diseases to the natives of California. This brought the Indian’s population down to 30,000 people.
