formation that makes it hard to know what the ultimate outcome will be. What makes it all worthwhile are the people I have worked with and met along the way and all they have taught me. My goal has always been to leave whatever I do better than I found it. I did not plan on being editor of the InfoLink but since it was my idea that gave name to it I guess it was among the inevitable. As far as the challenging times I have found it difficult to accept the fact that political maneuvering is dictating what happens with our beloved sport. When walking through the airport in Chicago recently, a large sign came into view that said “The only thing that is greater than a good idea is the team that follows it through.” And the teams that did are something else that made it all worthwhile. Thanks to all of those people who are objective in their decision making and follow through on any task given. Another thing I noticed in my travels this year is reflected in the following: Just when I felt a pressing need to motivate our board, and build enthusiasm and production, an Angel delivered Irene Wilson to our CBW board. She has been a shot in the arm to all of us and it is amazing what a person can do if they feel enthusiasm for their organization and a task. Thanks Irene, who arrived at our meeting, whipped out her laptop and began making notes about our meeting while we worked with our note pads. She guided us everywhere we needed to go with her iPhone in addition to finding any information we needed. She has convinced numerous people that CBW is a good organization to be a part of – garnering several members. A real Techie – yes! Welcome. I am eternally grateful to all of our board members and our ever important Life Members who respond to the call and make CBW what it is.

Happy New Year! May the coming year be good to all and I hope you enjoy good health – without it we can’t do much. Resurrect an old ball or buy a new one and try to raise your average. Having been involved in bowling administration from the league to National level for nearly 50 years, I have enjoyed bowling in the good times and agonized through the more challenging ones. We are now going through a trans-

“Bowl more, Text less,

your neck depends on it.”

What Will the New PWBA Tour Look Like? It won’t be your mama’s bowling tour.....

“What Will the New PWBA Tour Look Like? It won’t be your mama’s bowling tour” is worth going to www.starsandstrikesbowling.com and reading it in its entirety. This is our future lurking on the lanes, bowling in men’s events and waiting for something like someone backing a new women’s tour. It’s happening. It begins: “I’m about to do something some might call foolish – revealing the ages of a large group of women. I’m going to give you their ages to make a point . . . and they are not just women; they are athletes, most of whom once called bowling their profession; and age is a major factor for any athlete in any sport, although some of them seem almost ageless. The purpose of this daring little exercise is to speculate about how many of the top professional women bowlers who supported the former Professional Women’s Bowling Association tour will support the new PWBA Tour, slated to start in July. Because of Father Time and Mother Nature, it will be more likely we will see a lot of new names we have never seen before....” Due to space constraints we cannot print the entire article but we urge you to go to the above site and view one person’s opinion on the upcoming Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour scheduled to begin in July.

Jim Goodwin is a premier journalist who publishes the Stars and Strikes “America's Bowling Newsmagazine” and founder of the Bowling News Network BNN. The following excerpt from his recent article:

From January 3rd to January 7th 175 Male Bowlers and 117 Female Bowlers hit the lanes at the Orleans in Las Vegas NV for the 2015 Team USA Trials for the honor to become one of the ten male and ten female bowlers to make the 2015 Team USA. Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tennessee and Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio won the titles. Sixteen year old Doyle became the youngest in the history of the United States Bowling Congress Team USA Title Trials to win the men's title. He defeated Marshall Kent of Yakima, Washington, who previously was the youngest champion at 19 in 2012. Pluhowsky defeated two-time champion Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York . The National Selection Committee named an additional seven men and women based on their resumes and Trials performance. The men's selection were: Bill O'Neill, John Janawicz, Sean Rash, John Szczerbinski, Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones, and Devin Bidwell and the women's selection were: Brittni Hamilton, Missy Parkin, Josie Earnest, Kelly Kulick, Stefanie Johnson, Bryanna Caldwell, and Erin McCarthy.

CBW Interim Meeting The California Bowling Writers met in Fresno and President Lynly welcomed our new board member Irene Wilson – better known now as our Techie! Irene is up-to-date on technology and led us to our destinations with no problem. Two of our Life Members were recuperating – Joan Romeo from Thyroid surgery and Eloise Cottrell from a broken arm! The report on the Writing Awards had suggestions. Among them, entries must be in by the published deadline or they will not be eligible. Also, entrants will receive judge’s comments. Historian Jill Williamson is maintaining our history books and has started a new one for our phone card charity. We are always working on Membership and are at around 80. President, Treasurer, Director #1 and #3 will be up for election in June. Publicity Report encouraged the board to reach out and write to help local association, clubs and individuals to promote bowling and help them get the word out for available activities. Check out our Website! www.calbowlingwriters.org and keep abreast of what’s going on. We try to keep you informed about a variety of things. Our webmaster Kathy Watson does a terrific job. Barbara Metzinger assists us with Sunshine and sends birthday, congratulatory, sympathy and get well cards so let her know of anyone who should receive one of these.

Thanks is in order for Eldorado Hotel Casino, the National Bowling Stadium and Storm who have been ongoing supporters of the California Bowling Writers. We are eternally grateful for your support in our efforts to keep our members and others informed. What bugs employees most in the workplace? According to a Contatta survey of 1,139 workers, the top five annoyances are: 1. e-mail overload; 2. too much work, not enough time; 3. loud/irritating workers; 4. not enough personal space; 5. too many meetings. (Meetings are a must and well organized meetings are a blessing; Too much work? Are you organized – is it you?; Email overload – use your spam and junk file to designate people you don’t need to hear from and if it has grown beyond your ability to take care of it – Zap ‘em; Loud and irritating workers – some people just need to let everyone know they’re there.) Did you know in the American Civil War Kites were used to deliver letters and newspapers? And, did you know that cats have 32 muscles in each ear? Did you know where” HOT OFF THE PRESS” came from? As the paper goes through the rotary printing press friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off the press it’s hot. The expression means to get immediate information. Jim Dressel Retires from Luby Publishing - Jim Dressel, who served as Managing Editor and then Editor of Bowlers Journal International for many years before entering semi-retirement, has officially retired from Luby Publishing Inc., effective with the new year. The Barnes’ sign with Global - Global Manufacturing unveiled its agreement with 17-time PBA Tour champion Chris Barnes and two-time USBC Queens champion Lynda Barnes to join 900 Global as brand ambassadors. "Chris and Lynda's bowling accomplishments speak for themselves," said Bill Supper, Global Manufacturing's Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "It's not every day that you're given the opportunity to add individuals of their caliber to your company.” "Not only do they add credibility to our brand, but more importantly, they bring extraordinary impact to the sport both domestically and overseas."

Past BPAA President Rex Golobic Dies at Age 91

1923 - 2015

Rex Golobic, a former president of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America and a BPAA Hall of Fame member, dies at 91. Born in San Francisco, Golobic attended Stanford University before a brief stint in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was awarded two Bronze Stars. Upon returning home, he completed his degree in engineering at Stanford.

He went to work with his father, Henry, who had opened Hollywood Recreation Center in Hollywood, California, in 1937. He would work, and later take over, the family business which included the ownership and operation of centers such as the 44-lane Serra Bowl in Daly City, the 24-lane Bel Mateo Bowl in San Mateo and 32-lane Palo Alto Bowl. Golobic was a talented bowler early in his career, holding a 200 average for many years, ranking in the top one percent of all bowlers worldwide in 1950. He also was a charter member of the Professional Bowlers Association.

PBA Hall of Fame Charter Member Chuck Pezzano Dies

Internationally recognized bowling journalist, historian was one of a kind.

CHICAGO (Jan. 23, 2015) – Chuck Pezzano of Clifton, N.J., a charter member of the Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame and widely recognized as the dean of bowling journalists, died Friday of cardiac arrest while undergoing a stent procedure St. Mary’s Passaic, N.J. He turned 86 on Jan. 14. Since the formation of the PBA in 1958, no one has contributed more to the organization in so many different ways than Pezzano, a founding member of the organization. Born in Paterson, N.J., in 1929, Pezzano lived his entire life in New Jersey. After graduating from Rutgers University, he started his writing career with the Paterson Morning Call in 1952 and continued writing for The Record in Bergen County until his death, more than 60 years later. Over the years, he contributed to more than 100 publications around the world and he authored or co-authored more than a dozen books about bowling. Pezzano first became involved with the PBA as a top-flight competitor. He was the first collegiate bowler in the United States to bowl an 800 series. One of his proudest accomplishments as a bowler was joining his four sons – Charles Jr., Craig, Curt and Clay – as the first father and four sons to bowl 300 games. But his legacy off the lanes far surpassed his credentials as a player as he evolved into the most prolific bowling writer in history. In the 1960s, Pezzano and fellow New Jersey entrepreneur/PBA Hall of Famer Frank Esposito created the PBA Regional program, creating a close-to-home, affordable competition arena for thousands of would-be

professional bowlers to develop their skills. He was the first Meritorious Service inductee in the inaugural PBA Hall of Fame class in 1975, and later inducted into the United States Bowling Congress and Bowling Writers Association of America Halls of Fame, among his 12 halls of fames. In addition to his prolific writing contributions, Pezzano was a television pioneer, working with hall of fame broadcasters Mel Allen, Chris Schenkel, Jack Buck, Brent Musberger, Al Trautwig and others. He worked as a consultant on television, movie and instructional videos, and traveled the country serving as an emcee and guest speaker at hundreds of bowling functions.
