Calico Press As we head into the darkest time of the year I can't help but think about light. At first my thoughts are fo- cused on how much I miss the daylight and how I have to plan my driving around ever shortening daylight hours. However, there is something very special and almost sacred about the darkness and change in light at this time of year. It feels like the darkness is giving us permission to slow down and embrace other kinds of light. In the winter months I witness daily sunrises and watch as the light intensity, colour and reflec- tions change dramatically on the lake, especially in the late afternoon as the sun sinks low. Depending on the weather I might see mist rising; pierced by shafts of sunlight, hoar frost illuminating the trees or a thou- sand diamonds glistening in the ice and snow. And then there's the soft candlelight that plays such a big part in our religious and secular celebrations at this time of year. Many years ago when my son was little he insisted that we eat dinner by candlelight. Sometimes my first thought was “are you kidding – we have to get you fed and out to hockey” but he always prevailed and I am so grateful as there is something magical and precious about those candlelight memories. I know quilters spend a significant portion of time thinking about the colour values in their quilts. When creating landscape quilts I'm always fascinated and challenged about how to capture light and shadow and of course all quilts are strengthened by the use of light, medium and dark fabric and thread to build contrast and interest. It's always challenging and when you get it right, the results are magnificent. In order to really embrace winter light try digging out that box of candles you've been saving for the last 10 years. Light them and enjoy their glow through your winter evenings. And when you wake at 3 am don't just lie there; get up and peek out the window. The moon might be putting on a dazzling light show across a snowy landscape, which could be the inspiration for your next quilt. Safe travels all and may you be the light in the darkness for your family and friends. Respectfully Maureen President’s Message

PROGRAM UPDATE

October meeting follow-up: It was inspiring to see Jean Stephens’ quilts at our October 30 meeting. Based on the feedback we received we are making arrangements for her to return, probably in May, to do two workshops: free motion in the morning and colouring cloth in the afternoon. You will be able to sign up for one or both. She is also offering her Free Mo-tion level 2 workshop at Appleseed Quiltworks in Lindsay on November 21. Jean is a mem-ber of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), a worldwide art quilting association, and is active in the Land Between Pod for that organization. For more information on SAQA check out their website at https://www.saqa.com Placemats: Great to see all the placemats that were brought in at the October meeting. Thanks to Betty Drain for collecting them for the past few years, and to Theresia Laing for stepping up to take over from Betty. There is still time to make one or two to bring to our December meeting for donation to the Meals on Wheels program. Upcoming Meetings: We are delighted that Grantham Books will be here again for our De-cember luncheon, and we are looking forward to the Mini-workshops in January and our 5X10 presentation in February, when our talented guild members Betty Drain, Sandi Hean, Janet Spindloe, Carol Hlibka and Mary Burchell will be showing their work. January Mini-workshops: Plans are shaping up for the workshops on the theme of con-struction and technology. Deb Graham will be demonstrating how to construct effective la-bels for your quilts and showing some technology you can use for the labels. Annabelle Mel-ville will be sharing her construction techniques for the lovely 3 dimensional embellish-ments she has shown on us on her small hanging quilts. Heather Penwell will be taking us into Pinterest and beyond to show how you can use computer technology and apps to help with your quilting. We are also working on having sessions on cutting technology and on digital images. You will be able to attend 3 of the 5 sessions, and will make your choices when you arrive for the meeting on January 8. This year we hope to make things easier by giving you a mini-program which you can fill in with your choices and locations.

Once again, your generosity is being counted on to help us create an amazing Silent Auction and Members

Boutique for all those attending the Show. For the 2020 show, we will be collecting donations at one spot

for both show events at the beginning of each Guild meeting.

At each Guild meeting, members donating items will be given a ticket for a wonderful prize. The draw will

take place the last meeting before the show. The prize in 2018 was such a hit we’ve decided to offer the

same experience for the lucky winner and three friends in 2020. Our winner and friends will enjoy a day

of fun and sewing under the leadership one of our great teachers, Helen Blaskievich. Snacks and lunch

will be provided, laughter and fun are guaranteed!

To raise money to contribute to show costs and other Guild activities, the Silent Auction requires items

of slightly higher value, Members Boutique donations can be items in good shape that have quilting and

crafting potential. Collecting at one drop off point will allow us to sort the donations to go to the appro-

priate show event.

The following are some suggestions; but don’t let this limit your search for items that would be greatly

appreciated in new homes:

Completed projects, for examples, small quilts, bags (large and small), wall hangings, runners, assorted

small projects e.g. microwave bowl cozies, small quilts etc.

Unused kits for quilts, runners, bags, embroider/cross stitch etc.

Cotton fabric lengths, fat quarters, 5” or 10” square packages

New or good as new notions, eg. thread, rulers, patterns, etc.

Items that were gifts, prizes or items you thought were a good idea but you can’t remember what

that was now.

I’ve already started at home by setting aside a box for donations in my sewing area and as I come across

an item I can happily live without, I put it in the box. Don’t think every item has to be big enough to of-

fer for sale on its own. We will make beautiful baskets for the silent auction with assorted collected

items. Thanks in advance for any contributions you make.

Valerie Stankiewicz,

Silent Auction Chair

We are hoping to create another update with any new members who have joined since then. Annabelle Melville will have her camera with her at the next few meetings, and will approach many of you then.
