In this free class, an REI mountain biking specialist will give an introduction to the basics of mountain biking, including tips on equipment selection, best trails to ride, needed skills and great resources. This intermediate-level class teaches students about bike parts, basic repair techniques and when to seek professional repair help. Topics include cable systems and adjustments to your brakes and derailleur. To keep the class interactive, seats are limited to 6. Dates: Tuesday, August 16, 7:00pm, REI Austin-Gateway Price: $20 for members, $25 for non-members Register/info: www.rei.com/austin Wilderness First Aid Course with Wilderness Medicine Institute REI is collaborating with the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS to offer a comprehensive two day course that will teach you the wilderness medicine skills you need to recreate with confidence in the backcountry. From the Patient Assessment System through traumatic, medical, and environmental emergencies, this fast-paced, hands-on course is designed to prepare you to act if an accident occurs. Class participants will receive a 16-hour WFA certification at course completion. Space is limited, register soon! Dates: September 10-11, 9:00am-6:00pm, REI Austin-Gateway Price: Member: $200 Non-members:$220 Register/info: www.rei.com/austin Featured Presentation: America's Wild Spaces: The Pacific Crest Trail Join us for a screening of National Geographic's video special "America's Wild Spaces: The Pacific Crest Trail" hosted by 2004 PCT thru-hiker Scott "Stormtrooper" Jacobsmeyer. Zigzagging its way from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) boasts the greatest elevation changes of any of America's National Scenic Trails, allowing it to pass through six out of seven of North America's ecozones including high and low desert, old-growth forest and artic-alpine country. After the video Scott will share photos & insights from his own PCT journey and provide advice on preparing for & completing a PCT thru-hike.
