Preamble Power Electronics plays a vital role in realizing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. With the advent of development and availability of high power solid state devices, the use of present day Power Electronic devices facilitate generation of higher power both in stand- alone and grid connected systems. The objective of the One-day symposium is to bring all professionals, field experts, academicians, researchers and students in Sultanate of Oman under one roof to interact and exchange ideas, experiences and expertise in the specific area of applications of Power Electronics in renewable energy and grid connected systems with emphasis in Oman. This symposium includes a key note speech and several invited talks and presentations covering Renewable Energy-its future, trends, strengths, impact and research in Oman, state-of-the-art converters, distributed generation, grid connected systems, desalination systems, etc. The symposium is solely sponsored by Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC). The department is committed in providing quality education and producing competent Engineers to meet the growing demand for professionals in various disciplines of Electrical Engineering. The department runs four Engineering programmes: Computer, Telecommunications, Electronics and Instrumentation, and Electrical Power. The department encourages and nurtures its students to take up funded projects. The department has also a research strategy which is aligned with the national research goals and builds on the research capacity of its academic staff. The strategy focuses on acquiring research funding from various sources, strengthen the research collaboration with local industries, active participation in conferences as well as organizing academic and scholarly activities which contribute in enhancing the overall rating of the department.
