Design Details: Mobile Chicken CoopIn order to provide a client’s flock with luxurious and easy-to-maintain quarters, we designed a mobile unit to build on top of a trailer which can easily be moved to provide fresh pasture.

Design Details: Masonry and WoodP. Allen Smith & Associates are extensively involved with designing bespoke architectural features and garden ornaments, particularly in wood and masonry. Our design process involves conceptual drawing, construction documents, material sourcing, and collaboration with contractors and craftspeople throughout construction to ensure that design intent is realized in the built product.

In-Progress Ironwork ConstructionBy collaborating with a local local ironmonger, we were able to use prefabricated pieces to create an elegant bespoke balustrade and pergola for a client’s garden.

Ironwork Construction DrawingsThis project involved designing a to fit existing masonry, while also relating to existing ironwork and fulfilling the client’s desire for a fanciful aesthetic experience.

• Analyze and inventory existing site conditions and produce accurate existing vegetation plans to meet City of Sanibel regulations.

• Research, summarize and apply stringent environmental guidelines for Sanibel Island and guide clients through permitting processes.

• Collaborate with allied professionals and apply survey, engineering, site grading, drainage and residential infrastructure planning materials to site designs.

• Efficiently produce high-quality design construction documentation including hardscape plans, vegetation plants, irrigation plans, lighting plans, and design details.

• Create price estimates for landscape plans and proposals.

• Create high-quality project and marketing graphics (digital, graphic, and hybrid) including plan renderings, sections, photobooks, client handouts and proposals.

Confluence Kansas City, Missouri | June-August 2013 | position: intern

With multiple offices throughout the midwest, Confluence has expertise in many areas of landscape architecture. Confluence’s Kansas City office focuses on planning and urban design, particularly in Kansas City and surrounding communities. Through collaboration with other community experts, Confluence ensures that their design strategies will fulfill their clients’ intentions. My experience at Confluence enabled me to:

• Collaborate with a six-person landscape architecture team and project partners including urban planners and community stakeholders.

• Obtain, organize, and utilize GIS data to inform site design and urban planning strategies.

• Create high-quality project graphics (digital, graphic, and hybrid) including maps, renderings, sections, photoboards, and diagrams.

• Research, summarize, and apply zoning codes, planning documents, engineering reports, meeting notes, and historical information.

• Develop marketing materials, proposals and presentations for collaborators and the public.

Citizen Involvement Confluence draws on community expertise and engages citizens in their design process. During my time at Confluence, I produced graphics and attended community meetings, while also documenting and analyzing citizen responses.

Design Research and MappingUtilizing a variety of analysis and graphic softwares, I conducted design research and produced project graphics for urban and rural community strategy plans.

The North Downtown Saint Louis Development project identified urban issues for an underdeveloped 600-acre site north of downtown Saint Louis. Following construction of a new bridge from Missouri to Illinois, the study area will become a new focus of attention for Saint Louis. As part of an early planning process to reconnect the city fabric across the Interstate 70 corridor, our team proposed a series of elevated green park corridors connecting the urban fabric across the highway.

How to Prioritize Stormwater Interventions?Apalachicola Stormwater Strategy, Apalachicola, Florida | Fall 2013

Apalachicola, Florida, is a small seaside community (population 2000) that currently faces major water pollution and poor stormwater system performance.

Municipal GIS data on land use, slope, and existing hydrologic systems was used to identify priority streets for streetside stormwater interventions. This analysis will enable designers and the city of Apalachicola to more effectively implement streetside stormwater interventions, such as permeable paving and bioswales.

Averaging the priority level of points along the streets identified each street’s relative priority for streetside stormwater interventions. By concentrating streetside stormwater mitigation efforts on the High and Very High priority streets, the city could most effectively begin to address its stormwater problems.

Integrate Food Production into the Urban Fabric

Food Sources

Despite Saint Louis’s thriving food culture, north downtown Saint Louis lacks sources of healthy food, with only three grocery stores within the 635-acre study site. As one of the green corridors identified in the North Downtown Saint Louis Development study, four blocks between O’Fallon and Biddle streets - Saint Louis’s current food distribution center - were chosen to become a food district. With high visibility for those entering the city, a strategy of ground-level urban spaces and rooftop promenades create a strongly identifiable food district. Food on the Roof took Saint Louis’ existing food scene and envisioned a tastier future for an underutilized site.

With a founding in site research and mapping, the design process for Food on the Roof involved working across scales, as well as mediating between hand drawing and digital modeling. Each of the overlooks was designed to as part of the seamless spatial experience of the foodwalk.

Integrating planters and seating, the foodwalk was molded as a seamless spatial experience. It provides a continually changing sequence of views of the surrounding city. Edible plantings integrated into this walk provide a fully immersive experience. The foodwalk provides a physical tie between various elements of the food district.

The food walk is a third-story pedestrian walkway connecting public roof gardens overlooking a central chain of public spaces. Restaurants and productive roof gardens will be directly accessible from the food walk, stimulating activity and providing a complete edible experience of the city. The food walk will serve as a promenade, with viewing points overlooking the city and river. Expanding the pedestrian space to the roofs also allows pedestrians to avoid crossing the six lanes of traffic on the central boulevard at ground level.
