ORI 101/ORT100: Assignment

CALCULATING GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)This exercise will help you understand how grade point averages are calculated at Gadsden State. Even though you do not have final grades for the current semester, you will be able to use an estimate of your grades to calculate the GPA that you can expect for your classes this semester.

How It Works

Each class that you take is assigned a value of hours (semester hours or credit hours). For example, this class is worth 1 semester hour (or credit hour).

At the end of the semester, you will have earned a grade for each class. Quality points are assigned to your classes according to the following system:

A = 4 quality points per hour attemptedB = 3 quality points per hour attemptedC = 2 quality points per hour attemptedD = 1 quality point per hour attemptedF = 0 quality points per hour attempted If you make an A in a three-hour class, you would earn 12 quality points. (4 quality points per hour X 3 hours attempted = 12 quality points)

With a grade of C in a three-hour class, you would earn 6 quality points .

(2 quality points per hour X 3 hours attempted = 6 quality points) To find your GPA (the average of all your classes), total the number of quality points, then divide by the number of hours attempted. The result is your GPA (grade point average), also sometimes called quality point average.

Look at the following example to see how it works.
