TJ Tower with parents Jim and Sally at the 2011 Fair. If you have any questions regarding the livestock program or you wish to volunteer at the Fair, contact the Fair office at 209-736-2561.
The Calaveras County Fair Junior Livestock entry guide-books are now available on-line at frogtown.org and can be emailed to you directly by contacting laurie @frogtown.org. This year the Fair is trying to save costs and also be environ-mentally friendly so there will be a limited number of hard copies available. The publishing date is scheduled for late February. The new book has been completely revamped. It is our hope that you find the book much more user friendly. Many volunteer hours were donat-ed by Melissa Walraven and Leann Sullivan who served
as the editors of the entry book. There are a few changes that exhibitor's should pay special attention to. 1. Exhibitors may only en-
ter 2 market units of the same species and four market units total.
2. All three Outstanding Livestock Exhibitor divi-sions require an essay submittal.
3. All exhibitors showing large animals are re-quired to purchase lia-bility insurance. The cost is $35 per family.
4. The Fair is not charging entry fees however there is a stall fee.
Junior exhibitors, who wish
to show beef, MUST own
their project by December
17, 2011. The project must
also be under their manage-
ment. The exhibitor must
be feeding and caring for
their project. Independent
exhibitors, who are showing
market beef, must have on
file at the fairgrounds a pic-
ture of their project by De-
cember17, 2011. Independ-
ent exhibitor forms are
available at the fairgrounds.
The exhibitor and the ani-
mal must be in the photo-
graph. In addition, the Ca-
laveras County Fair and the
Calaveras Cattlemen’s As-
sociation will be holding pre
-fair weigh-ins for the Beef
“Rate of Gain” contest.
Measuring the “Rate of
Gain” is an important tool in
the management of the mar-
ket beef project. The infor-
mation can be used to deter-
mine the general overall
health of an individual ani-
mal as well as economic
traits. It is the general con-
sensus among producers
that an animal on an
increasing plain of nutrition
and gaining accordingly will
hang a more desirable carcass
than an animal that has been
held at a specific weight or
one that is a poor feed con-
verter. The “Beef Rate of
Gain” contest pre-fair weigh-
ins are scheduled for Decem-
ber 17 between 9:00 am and
11:00 am. There is a $10
entry fee per animal. The
competition is sponsored by
the Calaveras County Cattle-
men’s Association,
Spence Ranch Feed &
Supply.

Let Every American Par-ticipate is a program that allows people from everywhere on the plan-et to participate in the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubi-lee. Participants can visit the frogtown.org website, pick a frog jock-ey and be represented at the 2012 Frog Jump. This great program is actually a new twist on
an old idea. For decades people have requested that a “Jockey “ jump a frog for them during the Frog Jump Jubilee. A jockey would be assigned this task and then the Fair would mail them their results. People have entered by proxy from all over the world. Now it is even easier than ever before. The first 100 people who
enter online are eligible to win a pair of boots from BOGS. Browse the frogtown.org website and pick a jockey of your very own.

The Royalty That Serves

The Miss Calaveras Volunteer group has in now more than a year old and so many commu-nity services can be credited to the small but mighty group. Led by pageant director Lacey Neufeld the group has continu-ally served their community.
Most them are attending col-lege out of the area travel home several weekends a year to participate in such events as Taste of Calaveras, Grape Stomp and many more. They just don’t attend events they work at them. They also clean a stretch of highway on highway 4. One of the groups special contributions has been sup-porting one of their own. Cath-erine Cornish Lewellen a former Miss Calaveras was diagnosed with cancer this last year. The
girls stepped up to the plate by providing meals, preschool presentations, selling raffle tick-ets and assisting pageant direc-tor Lacey Neufeld with the Mr. Calaveras Program. Mr. Calav-eras was a fundraiser held last September. A pageant of sorts, Mr. Calaveras was well support-ed by the community. Mr. Tony Boitano was named Mr. Calav-eras and over $9,000 was raised for Lewellen.
The Calaveras County Fair still has booth space available, both inside and outside. Local vendors receive a discount. For more information and pricing please contact Laurie Gianni-ni at (209) 736-2561 or email [email protected]

with Jim’s tales. About this time, two slickers from New York arrived in town just ahead of an arrest warrant. They
made their rounds to the gambling halls and such. On one of those occa-sions they had the for-
tune of meeting Jim Smiley and were subject to Jim’s boasting. The
New Yorkers poked and prodded at Smiley until a contest and wager en-sued. Old Jim was easi-ly distracted and left his prize frog, Dan’l Web-ster, in the care of the
strangers who quietly filled Jim’s frog with buck shot. So you can guess the rest: the city slickers’ frog out-jumped
It was the summer of 1865 and Calaveras County was a booming, roaring, mining frontier camp. The roads were
bad and travel was slow, and so the miners did not go far for amuse-ment. This was the set-
ting for Mark Twain’s first published work, “The Celebrated Jump-
ing Frog of Calaveras County” — the story of a gambler named Jim Smiley. Jim, a miner and gambler, paraded the streets with a basket under his arm, boasting
about the ability of a certain frog. The local gambling houses, tav-erns and their proprie-tors all were acquainted
