Red Dress Project 2012

The Red Dress Project is both an event to promote awareness for women’s ealth, as well as a design exploration project for students. This year the Red Dress project promoted awareness for heart disease, currently the number one killer of women. The American Heart Association in Cincinnati Spon-sored the show at the Duke Energy Convention Center: April 2012.

Stain Project 2011

For the stain project, exploring stains on a pure natural and synthetic fabric, I chose to explore the effect some household food items would have on 100% craft lace and 100% silk gauze.  I chose these two fabrics because in the dying process, they are more susceptible to acidic dyes.  For my test swatches, I worked with lemon juice, Matcha (fine powdered green tea), cocoa, red wine, turmeric, black tea, rooibos, and a fruit and flower based herbal tea.  While the turmeric was certainly the strongest, bright-est stain- it was not the color I was looking for.  I chose to work with the herbal tea, Strawberry-Kiwi Fruit Melange.  This tea is a blend of dried fruit bits and flowers, includ-ing rose and hibiscus, which were responsible for imparting most of the pink color.  After constructing the nylon/silk garment, I soaked it in a warm alum bath, then dyed it in a very concentrated infusion of Strawberry-Kiwi Fruit Melange.  Since the silk absorbed the tea coloring more readily than the nylon, I chose to dip-dye, creating  an ombre effect, in order to tastefully enhance the differences in color absorbency of both fabrics.

Alternate Textile Project 2012

On next page

For this alternate textile assignment, I choose to work with sheer, knit, nylon stockings.  I cut and pressed approximately 40 pair of knee-high, black and nude, stock-ings.  Originally I wanted to melt the seams together, asnylon has a melting point of 428 F.  When nylon is presented to heat, it shrinks away from the source before melting.  I had trouble finding an instrument to press and fuse the edges of the melting nylon together while they were still soft.  Alternately, I began to lay the rectangular pieces out in different patterns, choos-ing one that contained some compositional interest as well as providing enough cover.  I machine-stitched the pieces together using a zigzag or stretch stitch in order to maintain the inherent stretch quality that nylon stockings have.   The torso I draped on a body form, and the sleeves were drafted from a sloper set.

Independent Projects 2009-2011

The following garments were designed and constructed prior to formal fashion and construction classes. Between 2009 and 2011 I largely explored the methods for women’s wear patternmaking and some experimentation with building the garment on the dress form.

Pleated Cotton Day Dress: built on the form
