  • The urban design studio at the Kansas City Design Center consisted of nine students working together on a comprehensive vision study for green and civic space in downtown Kansas City. There were two primary purposes of the project: to create a vision plan that organizes all green and public space into a larger urban order to guide development and to further investigate the propositions of the vision plan by designing case study projects.

The fall semester began with an analysis of the existing system of green and civic space within downtown Kansas City. The major conclusion drawn was that the current system is extremely fragmented and not meaningfully integrated into the urban order of the city. The vision plan created aims to provide a constructive vision for an ordered system of urban spaces that will enhance functional and spatial cohesion of the downtown area and serve as an instrument for qualitative change and development.

There are three primary components to the vision plan: anchor parks, corridors, and net-work (infill) parks. Anchor parks are defined as iconic parks that embody the identity of Kansas City. These parks have permanence and potential to connect the city to its place through its history, topography, and natural features. Each anchor park primarily serves the city as a whole, but can also function as neighbor-hood or regional parks. Corridors are linear parkspace for multi-modal transportation to connect the districts of Kansas City. They are envisioned as such that they provide a comfort-able experience for commuting and leisurely exploration. Network (infill) parks are defined as green and civic spaces that infill between anchor parks and corridors. They are intended for spontaneous exploration, having a tempo-rary place in the city to aid in its development and growth.

Designing a church for the Mennonite congre-gation in Manhattan, Kansas, was a positive experience because it allowed for interaction with a potential client. The Mennonites out-grew their current facility within the city and purchased a lot of land to build a new church upon. One fourth-year architecture studio was asked to design options for the church. The goal of this project was to design a building and its surroundings to be open, welcoming, and well-used at all times. The Mennonite congre-gation made clear that they wanted a church that would connect them to history, native land-scape, and dramatic views while attaining the highest LEED certification. Their strong con-nection to nature meant they want to preserve and cherish natural land, including land for their urban church.

There were critical spaces to be designed on the interior and exterior, with the sanctuary, fel-lowship hall, gathering area, and contemplative space receiving a large amount of attention. To promote the connection to nature, native Kan-sas limestone was used to highlight important spaces. Glazing was carefully considered to frame the strongest views toward the city and natural areas within the site. In critique, the big-gest flaws within this design are lack of site de-velopment in the land allotted, having a uniform appearance of glazing that does not emphasize importance of certain spaces, and not using the conjoining roofs.

  • This project was focused on designing a gallery for Tony Smith, a former architect, painter, and sculptor. The design intent was to create an open structure with a large amount of natural light to display his work. There were three primary focuses in the design of this gallery: lighting, structure, and served versus servant spaces.

Lighting was a large consideration in the design because there needed to be naturally lit spaces to show off Tony Smiths sculptures and controlled lighting without sun to protect his paintings. The sun shading was designed to prevent sunlight from entering more than half-way into the gallery at all times of the day.

The spaces were initially organized by their function, served versus servant, to allow for clarity in the layout of spaces within the build-ing. The corner was used for servant spaces, primarily egress stairs, storage, bathrooms, and mechanical rooms. The rest of the building contained served spaces that included galler-ies, a cafe, rooftop garden, offices, and lobby. This organization of the gallery was easily un-derstandable because it occurred in the same manner on all floors.

Lastly, structure was important because it allowed for space to break up the building through double height areas, window place-ment and angular movements, and display of paintings and sculpture. Structure was con-structed of reinforced concrete columns and walls, while the figural waffle slab overhead planes denoted galleries.

Tony Smith created simple paintings and sculptures that were centerpieces and deserve a fitting home, and this gallery begins to shape from his influence.

  • The intent of the Stavanger Cultural Center in Norway was to create a sacred space for visitors and residents that accentuates the historic Valberg Tower. The tower was built in 1853 as a watchtower for the city, and has with-stood several fires. Today it is used as a private art gallery showing contemporary art by local and national artists. The site of the tower is on a steep slope that has been considered a barrier and thus been undeveloped. However, to emphasize the importance of the Valberg Tower and the significance to Stavanger, a cultural center was designed that allows for a sacred experience in the middle of the city.

My main design goals for this project were to create a strong relationship to the Valberg Tower, separate the structure of the cultural center from its exterior cladding, emphasize geometry through the Golden Ratio, and connect the building back to nature. The relationship of the cultural center to the Valberg Tower was critical. The objective was to complement the tower without overpowering it, while allowing the cultural center to stand on its own. The shape of the building was unpreten-tious, and allowed it to become a frame that pointed toward the tower. Wood is the primary building material in old Stavanger and an integral part of Stavanger history. In separating the structure of the building, the traditional use of wood in construction is celebrated through the visible columns, beams, and joists. The Golden Ratio has long been connected with sacred space, and to create a sense of harmo-ny within the building, its design was structured by the Golden Ratio. Finally, the building relates to the sacred by creating a strong relationship to nature. There are views out towards all parts of the city, looking out over Old Stavanger, over the fjord, and towards the newer parts of Stavanger.

While working at Cannon Design, I primarily worked on healthcare projects with an empha-sis on master plans.

The first project I worked on was a strategic master plan for Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in St. Louis. It was an excellent experience because I was able to be involved in many aspects of the project; I attended meetings with the client, aided in the site and department assessment process, and assisted in producing drawings presented to the client. I was able to see this project through the first phase, and learned how to effectively communicate ideas through clear mapping strategies. I also worked with data, understand-ing how building codes affected the hospital, what standards were acceptable within the hospital chain, and how to translate numbers into diagrams.

On the Penn State Hershey Medical Center Strategic Facilities Master Plan, I assisted in developing the set of plans for the main buildings and all campus buildings that broke the building down for analysis. I was also able to familiarize myself with working in large data spreadsheets because I aided in the analysis of usage within the hospital.

The design of the Centre Hospitalier de lUniversite de Montreal (CHUM) was awarded to Cannon Design during my internship. I was placed on the Exemplar Room team, which looked at specific rooms that are consistent throughout the hospital. I primarily worked in Revit formatting sheets for publication to the client, helped place medical equipment via Codebook within exemplar rooms, and assisted in data analysis for the exemplar rooms.
