ALBERTA

Welcome to our 21st Annual Alberta Sustainable Building Symposium!

This has been an exciting year for the Alberta Chapter – we welcomed our new Regional Director, Lisa Fox, we launched our first Leadership Awards, and we expanded our board to its maximum size to handle all of the great upcoming programs, education and advocacy work we are doing as an organization.

The sustainability landscape is constantly changing, and we are working hard to stay at the front of the movement, guiding and supporting programs and projects that range from product and technology development, to policy and benchmarking programs. We are striving to build core relationships with our provincial and municipal leaders as well as organizations working towards meaningful change. We are at the precipice of the critical climate change movement, supporting our membership every step of the way.

This year’s ASBS highlights our partners and the importance of strengthening partnerships to continue building our industry and delivering the sustainability and climate change message to a broader audience. We are looking forward to offering even more content at the symposium by extending the event to two days with day one offering educational workshops, an exhibitor pecha kucha style showcase, and a thought-provoking evening keynote and networking event on circular economy. Day two brings a series of themed panels presentations in the morning and a series of shorter sound-byte technical sessions to offer a range of learning and engagement opportunities for everyone. Day two will also feature a municipal keynote panel and exciting updates and announcements from our partners.

Our board members, staff, and volunteers will be on hand during the entire ASBS to welcome you and facilitate discussions, answer questions, and develop lasting relationships.

I am thrilled to represent our membership and board as Chair of our Chapter and am looking forward to collaborating with our members and non-members alike as well as our partners across the province and nationally. I welcome you to reach out to connect with me any time and work together towards a more sustainable future!

Inspiring Innovation & Climate Leadership – October 11 - 12 | Calgary, AB7 CAGBC.ORG/ASBS

Session Synopsis: The construction industry operates within a linear economy of make, use, dispose. Buildings are stripped out and torn down with astonishing regularity while new buildings are constructed from hard-won virgin materials. But raw materials are becoming scarce, and the demands for them are exploiting fragile ecosystems, even as the global demand for resources continues to rise. Policy makers and organizations are beginning to look for a more regenerative, circular economy model. The construction industry demands over half the world’s extracted materials and generates around a third of the total waste, making it a prime candidate for applying the circular economy. Yet there has been little focus on how construction industry professionals and their clients can contribute towards the movement.

Drawing on illustrative methods and examples, David will explain how the principles of a circular economy can be applied to the built environment where resources are kept in use and their value retained. The talk will describe how buildings and materials can be reused or salvaged to extend their life and proposes ways new business models can be applied to reduce capital and lifecycle costs, providing a positive architectural legacy for future generations.

11:15am - 12:45pm

DAY TWO - MORNING PANEL SESSIONS: October 12

Session Synopsis: Zero Carbon buildings require renewable energy, however the reality is that sometimes our buildings are not located in the best locations to generate energy themselves. Situations like this will require off-site renewable energy. Markets for Renewable Energy Certificates and Power Purchase Agreements have emerged quickly around the world. Environmental standards have also been put in place to ensure that these markets continue to drive investment and growth in renewable energy. The emergence of virtual net metering and community solar have also given consumers more choice. This session will include presentations from industry specialists as we attempt to demystify the off-site renewable energy market.

DAY TWO - MORNING PANEL SESSIONS: October 12

Session Synopsis: Leadership for climate change in the building sector: opportunities and obstacles. Aligns with Economics of Green Buildings. It’s common for design professionals, developers and contractors to blame the cost of green building for their failure to build more sustainability. This session will explore the real impediments to achieving carbon neutrality. Hint: the cost of green is a big player in a larger system that conspires against sustainability objectives.

Using systems thinking, a panel of key players from the building sector will collaborate with the audience on identifying the actual culprits and strategizing to get around those. That panel includes Michael Rivest, Associate Architect, DIALOG; Rob Otway, VP and District Manager, PCL Construction Ltd. and James Robertson, CEO, West Campus Development Trust. Systems thinking tells us that for every obstacle there is always a leverage point. As a group, let’s detect the leverage points for change and figure out how to make every building green.

MEETING CLIMATE GOALS WITH GREEN BUILDINGS Moderator: Juan Monterrossa, City of Edmonton

DAY TWO - AFTERNOON SYMPOSIUM: October 12

Session Synopsis: What does it take for a City to meet the International Paris Agreement’s target of maintaining global average temperature increases to 1.5˚C. In support of the Change for Climate - Edmonton Declaration, Edmonton has applied cutting edge emissions and financial modelling to answer this question. The Edmonton Declaration is a call to action protocol document developed during the first every IPCC Cities and Climate Change Science conference hosted by Edmonton in March 2018. Municipalities from around the world are signing on to the Declaration and reviewing their climate action plans based on evidence and the 1.5˚C goal. Edmonton is in a unique position as an energy city, the northern most large city in North America, and a City that is already seeing temperature increase well above 1.5˚C. The presentation will also have data on Edmonton’s changing climate and the risk and vulnerabilities that Climate Change represents. The presentation will focus on the Edmonton Declaration and the modelling conducted. The importance of buildings in meeting these climate goals will be highlighted and compared to other policy levers and programming a municipality can implement to achieve a low carbon future. The importance of the alignment of all levels of the government will be discussed, using a policy case study involving the Alberta Electricity Grid; a deep dive into the challenges and opportunities posed by having one of the most carbon intensive electricity grids in Canada and the role the various levels of government can play in achieving a low carbon, sustainable fuel mix in the future.

Inspiring Innovation & Climate Leadership – October 11 - 12 | Calgary, AB18 CAGBC.ORG/ASBS

Session Synopsis: Our aging existing building stock has significant potential for energy and carbon reduction. Commercially available sustainability certifications for existing buildings such as LEED Canada for EB:O&M, BOMA BEST, WELL, Fitwel standards provide defined framework and metrics for targeting sustainability in existing buildings.

This presentation will discuss several case studies where these sustainability certifications were considered for retrofit economics, capital/operating cost, and additional benefits to building users. For example, the CORE in downtown Calgary is the first building of its kind to pursue LEED EB:O&M certification and to use the Energy Jumpstart path to meet energy prerequisite. Centre 10, a high-rise office building in downtown Calgary, is currently pursuing LEED EB:O&M and conducting re-commissioning to identify suitable retrofit opportunities. These case studies aim to inform how different building types may find suitable retrofit opportunities and sustainability certifications towards a low carbon future.

Inspiring Innovation & Climate Leadership – October 11 - 12 | Calgary, AB19 CAGBC.ORG/ASBS

Session Synopsis: Urban Farming in Alberta. The transportation of products to grocery stores account for a large share of our country’s GHG emissions when on average, produce travels upwards of 2,000 km from farm to sale. It is essential for a community’s sustainability goals and for its own resilience, to cultivate the industry of urban agriculture and farming for the purposes of growth of local produce. This presentation will outline the design of these types of buildings and the challenging factors which make this type of development unique from conventional buildings which may hinder compliance of urban farms due to certain inadequacies in municipal zoning and provincial building codes.

A case study will be presented to showcase the different variables unique to these type of buildings, such as evapotranspiration, increased lighting density, process loads and increased fan powers that may increase the difficulty for these buildings to achieve compliance with the code. It is imperative for the success of these buildings that they design for the optimal environment for their crops and in doing so, will reduce the harmful environmental impact of conventional farm via reduced transportation.

Session Synopsis: Biofiltration is a proven way to improve indoor air quality. Employing this green technology results in three important economic benefits: reduced energy costs, improved occupant well-being, and increased property value. Reduction in energy costs can easily be quantified for each unique building and weather climate. Meanwhile, the less tangible benefits of occupant well-being and increased property value are harder to quantify. In this presentation we will use various methods to predict the economic gains associated with these three important benefits.
