Iowa Crossroads CLC Director’s Column
Eleven members of the Iowa Crossroads Cadillac & LaSalle Club gathered for a
“wild” weekend near the shores of Lake Oboboji in northwest Iowa on May 16-17,
2015. Members in attendance included Eric & Patt Anderson (who helped organize
this fine event), Dean & Vickie Stoltenberg, Lyle & Lori Dahl, Maurine Edmond,
Nora Schlenker, Dick Downing, Jim Caffrey, and myself, Steve Fox.
We started off the weekend by meeting for lunch at Perkin’s Restaurant in Milford,
Iowa. After a nice lunch and a short meeting (minutes are posted later in this
newsletter), the members were in for a real treat right down the road at Okoboji
Classic Cars, the ultimate man (or woman) cave! With a collection of over 100
beautifully-restored classic cars displayed throughout the museum along recreated
settings of different time periods, you really felt that you took a step back in time.
As you pass from the gift shop and into the museum, you step back in time as you
enter a re-creation of downtown Spencer, Iowa (as it appeared in 1957). The
three-dimensional shops, boutiques, theater, hotel, service station, car dealership,
and other buildings provided a realistic feel. Other street venues in the museum
included Tony’s Pizza Stand, a drive-in movie experience (playing American
Graffiti, of course), and a huge rendition of Arnolds Park’s Roof Garden, Fun House
and Peacock Diner (as they appeared in 1938). What a huge treat for all to see!
After the museum, we toured Dick Downing’s shop in Milford where we saw some
beautiful automobiles (including his 1958 Caddie) along with his classic guitar and
pen collections, not to mention his unique “Rat Fink” signs. Then, on our way to
the hotel, Eric & Patt lead us on a driving tour along the banks of West Okoboji
Lake to view all the beautiful lake homes. All of us were in a state of deep envy.

Later that evening, we all met for a great dinner at the Gingham Inn, where
walleye pike and barbecue-racked ribs were their mouth-watering, completely
plate-filled specialties. After dinner, many of us toured Eric & Patt’s storage facility
and shop, where they store many of their classic cars, including their gorgeous
1949 Caddie and a racy 1987 Buick GNX. Once again, we were in a state of envy!
Sunday morning, we checked out of our hotel and headed to Jim Caffrey’s lakeside
condo in Arnold’s Park for a fantastic home-cooked breakfast (courtesy of Jim) of
Baked French Toast Casserole (recipe included later in this newsletter), fresh fruit,
bacon and eggs! A very perfect way to start off the day! Of course, more envy!
Following breakfast, we toured the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum in
Arnold’s Park. Beginning with a film chronicling the history of Arnold’s Park (dating
back to 1884), we embarked on a guided-tour of this fabulous museum. In the
museum were beautiful mahogany boats and sail craft dating as far back as 1890,
remnants of the original 1884 passenger boat The Queen that adorned these lakes,
a replicate of a 1913 Okoboji country store, and memorabilia from rides/fun house
that were original to Arnold’s amusement park (circa 1920).
Across the street, the gang headed to the Iowa Rock ‘N Roll Museum, where Dean
met up with an old flame and members tripped the lights fandango as they danced
away the morning to 1950’s Rock ‘N Roll (see attached group pictures). Then, we
took a leisurely stroll up to the lakefront to get a glimpse of the Queen II passenger
ship, a statue commemorating the ol’ Captain, and a lakeshore view of Arnold’s
current amusement park. We finished this fine weekend event by taking a walk to
the historic Abbie Gardner Cabin, the site of the 1857 Spirit Lake Massacre.
Special thanks for this memorable, fun-filled event is extended to Eric & Patt
Anderson (for doing all the legwork in organizing this event for our regional club,
allowing us to tour their car shops, and serving as our hosts), Dick Downing (for
allowing us to tour his nostalgic car shop and collection in Milford), and Jim Caffrey
for providing us with a delicious breakfast at his picturesque lakeside condo!

Opening: Regional Director Steve Fox called the meeting to order at Perkin’s Restaurant in Milford, Iowa on Saturday, May 16, 2015. Eleven members of the Iowa CrossRoads CLC were present (see attendance list under Director’s Column).
Treasurer’s Report: Steve gave the Treasurer’s report in the absence of Club Treasurer, David Twombley. Steve reported $350.16 in the operating account.
CLC Grand National: Steve reminded members to make sure they have their
reservations made for the CLC Grand National in Brookfield, Wisconsin set for June
24-27 (early-bird reservation deadline was May 28, 2015). Six of 11 members
present at the meeting indicated that they have registered for the event.
July Event: Club members voted to change the date of our July tour (John Wayne
Birthplace & Museum in Winterset) to Saturday, July 18th (instead of July 11th) due
to scheduling conflicts. The newly-opened museum promises to be a great touring
event for us, so please … mark your calendars accordingly!
October Event: Vickie reported of an idea to tour the Villages of Van Buren in
southeast Iowa, but after exploring the tour firsthand … she feels that this tour is
not quite up to par. She and Dean are now exploring other ideas for our October
event to take place on Saturday, October 17, 2015.
Oversight: I forgot to mention in last month’s minutes that Vicki Stoltenberg
provided a very thoughtful and beautiful Easter basket that a drawing was held for
at our April meeting in Stone City. Nora Schlenker was the lucky winner of this
beautifully crafted gift! Much thanks to Vickie for this nice touch to our event!

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
Happy Birthday! Happy Anniversary! Bob Carlson (June 21) Jim & Janice Johnson (June 8)
Great Recipe! This recipe for French Toast Casserole was provided by Jim Caffrey, who served
it up to our membership at his lakeside condo during our recent trip to Okoboji.
Ingredients: 1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces), 8 large eggs, 2 cups half-and-half, 1 cup milk, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon
ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, dash salt, Praline Topping (recipe follows), maple syrup.
Praline Topping: 1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter, 1 cup packed light brown sugar, 1 cup
chopped pecans, 2 tablespoons light corn syrup, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg. Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well.
Makes enough for Baked French Toast Casserole.
Directions: Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat
baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater
or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in
between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40
minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup. Take it from me (Steve) … this is Outstanding Stuff … Thanks, Jim!
