CABI SCIENCE REPORT 20162 3
IntroductionThis is the second year that we have compiled the annual CABI Science Report.
At present, it is one of CABI’s corporate key performance indicators to produce at least 100 scientific publications each year, of which at least 30 are in journals with an impact factor of at least 2.00 that year. In the table below, it can be seen that although the total number of publications substantially exceeded this target, the number of papers in journals with a 2016 impact factor >2 was slightly down on target.
Scientific publications in 2016 Open access
Pay to view Total
Total number of publications 48 75 123
Number of peer-reviewed publications 32 55 87
Number of publications in journals with a 2016 impact factor >2 8 18 26
Number of publications directly related to CABI’s funded research programme in peer-reviewed journals with a CABI first or corresponding author
15 13 28
This breakdown is provided because the bottom row identifies our core research published in peer-reviewed journals with a CABI first or corresponding author. We plan that this category should be published entirely open access by 2019 as part of our Science Strategy; for 2016, the objective was to reach 50% which was achieved.
In future, we shall explore other ways to measure the quality and impact of our scientific outputs, looking at the impact of individual publications, rather than the cruder measure of the journal impact factor. However, the accumulated numbers presented above will facilitate the monitoring of long term trends.
The CABI Scientific Outputs Portal (http://www.cabi.org/cso/search/?q=sc%3acb) has been set-up to help provide access to our scientific outputs. Here you can see a growing proportion of our staff’s scientific publications since the first parts of CABI were established more than one hundred years ago. The portal operates in the format of CABDirect, i.e. it is fully searchable and includes bibliographic details, an abstract and (when available) the full text. The content is now complete from 2009, and we are working to ensure full coverage from year 2000 by the end of 2017. We are also planning to incorporate some of the other scientific outputs listed in this report, e.g. our scientific reports.
