DESCRIPTION

GeneralThe SHS2 switching and isolating apparatus consist of gas-insulatedswitch-disconnectors and isolators, suitable for use in medium voltagemetal-enclosed switchgear. They are used in secondary distribution substations for supplying lines, power transformers and ring networks.

Technical characteristicsThe SHS2 switch-disconnectors and isolators are made up of a stainlesssteel cylindrical housing, a set of three top insulators and a set of threebottom insulators made of epoxy resin, and a front operating mechanism. The blade contacts for isolation, breaking, closing and earthing are arrangedinside the cylinder in SF6 gas at a pressure of 125 kPa absolute. The unit is the sealed for life type complying with the IEC 60694 Standards. It is therefore free from any problems of gas tightness.A gas exhaust valve is located in the rear part of the cylinder for any over-pressure.The contacts can take up three positions: CLOSED - OPEN - EARTHED.The position of the contacts can be verified from the front of the operatingmechanism by means of a reliable indication, in compliance with IEC62265-1 and CEI 17-4 and with the IEC 62271-102 and CEI EN 60129Standards.The three top insulators act as a support for the fixed contacts and allowfixing of the main busbars. The three bottom insulators act as a support for the moving contacts andallow connection of the cables or of the busbars.

Furthermore, the metal segregationprovided by the housing consider-ably reduces the possibility of a short-circuit between the phases andbetween the upper and lowercontacts of the same phase due toleakage currents.

The stainless steel housing providesa metal earthed segregationbetween the busbar compartmentand the feeder compartment of theunit the apparatus is installed in.This characteristic ensures maximumpersonnel safety during any interven-tion in the feeder compartment, suchas replacement of one or more fusesor cable maintenance, even with themain busbars energised.

OPERATING MECHANISMS

GeneralThe switch-disconnectors use T1-T1M and T2type operating mechanisms with separateoperating seats for the isolation and earthingoperations. The isolators use T3 and T4 type operatingmechanisms with a single operating seat. With T1-T2-T3 and T4 operating mechanisms, theopening and closing operations are carried outlocally manually by means of an operating leverprovided with them. For the T2 operating mechanism, it is alsopossible to carry out the remote openingoperation by means of a special shunt openingrelease. With the T1M motor operator, the closing andopening operations are carried out remotely. However, in case of emergency, they can also becarried out locally manually by means of theoperating lever provided or electrically by meansof the special pushbuttons. The normal power supply voltages for the T1Mmotor operator are:– 24-48-110-220 VDC;– 48-110-220 VAC 50-60Hz.

T1-T1M Operating mechanism with independ-ent operation on exceeding deadcentre

This enables rapid either manual or motor-operated closing and opening of the switch-disconnector with operating speed independentof the operator, obtained by using a single spring.Closing or opening takes place by charging theabove-mentioned spring (manually or by motor)until it exceeds dead centre. It also carries out rapid manual closing of theearthing switch with operating speedindependent of the operator. It is used in SHS2/T1, SHS2/T1N, SHS2/T1M andSHS2/T1M/N type switch-disconnectors.

T2 Stored energy operating mechanismwith independent operation

This enables rapid manual closing of the switch-disconnector with operation independent of theoperator, obtained by means of a spring chargeduntil it exceeds dead centre.During the closing operation, a separate spring isautomatically charged, storing the energy foropening.Switch-disconnector opening can be carried outby means of:– an operating lever– a shunt opening release (applied onto the

operating mechanism itself)– a release system activated by the fuse striker in

the case of even a single fuse blowing (only forSHS2/T2F - SHS2/T2F/N).

It also carries out rapid manual closing of theearthing switch with operating speedindependent of the operator. It is used in SHS2/T2, SHS2/T2/N, SHS2/T2F andSHS2/T2F/N type switch-disconnectors.

T3 Operating mechanisms with dependentoperation

These allow manual closing of the isolator andearthing switch with operation speed dependenton the operator.Closing and opening are obtained by working onthe operating lever. The lever can only beremoved after completion of the operation. The T3 type operating mechanism is used in theSHS2/I, SHS2/I/N, SHS2/IF and SHS2/IB typeisolators.

T4 Operating mechanisms with independentoperation

These allow manual closing of the earthingswitch with operating speed independent of theoperator. The opening and closing operations are carriedout locally manually by means of an operatinglever provided. The lever can only be removedafter completion of the operation. The type T4 operating mechanism is used in theSHS2/ES type earthing switch.

the type of laminations used (hotlaminated or with orientatedcrystals). There is the maximum connectioncurrent when circuit-breaker closingtakes place corresponding to thevoltage passing through zero.A further result to be guaranteed isprotection against faults in the lowvoltage winding and in the stretch ofthe connection from this to thecircuit-breaker positioned on thesecondary, avoiding the use of fuseswith rated current which is too high,in order to ensure tripping within ashort time even under these faultconditions.A rapid check of the short-circuit current at thesecondary terminals of the transformer and on thesupply side of the circuit-breaker on the secondary- if placed at a significant distance, allows the triptime to be verified on the fuse blowing curve. The usage table given below takes both therequired conditions into account, i.e. sufficientlyhigh rated current to avoid untimely fuse blowingduring the no-load connection stage and, in anycase, of a value which guarantees protection ofthe machine against faults on the low voltage side.

(*) ABB CEF type fuses. Increases in the rated normal current of the fuses must be foreseen in the case of transformer overload or in the case ofambient temperature higher than 40 °C.

Three fuses for transformer protection can beconnected in series with the SHS2 switch-disconnector, with dimensional characteristicscomplying with DIN 43625 Standards. The fuse striker must have the force and runshown in the diagram.Selection of the fuse according to the voltage andpower of the transformer must be made inconformity with the data indicated in the table.

Transformer protection and selection offusesWhen the isolators are used to control andprotect transformers, they are fitted with aparticular type of current-limiting fuses whichguarantee selectivity with other protectiondevices and can take the high transformerconnection currents without deteriorating. In this case, protection against overcurrents onthe medium voltage side of the transformer is notindispensable since this task is carried out by theprotection provided on the low voltage side. The protection on the medium voltage side canbe entrusted just to the fuse, which must beselected taking into account the no-loadconnection current, which can take on valuesequal to or higher than 10 times the rated currentaccording to the power of the transformer and to
