Oil Types

Vacuum Pump Oils

LEYBONOL lubricating oils for vacuumpumps need to fulfil demanding re-quirements. Their vapour pressuremust be low at high temperatures andthe water content and water uptakemust be minimal. Their viscositycharacteristics need to be flat; lubri-cating properties need to be excellentand they need to be resistant againstthermal decomposition and increasedmechanical stress.

All the LEYBONOL oils listed in thefollowing have been subjected in ourfactory laboratories to very compre-hensive tests closely resembling theconditions encountered in practice bythe respective pump series.

Under vacuum engineering conditionslubricating oils may react very different-ly compared to what is being expectedof them.

In order to ensure the best possibleperformance of the vacuum pumps, the use of LEYBONOL vacuum pumpoils qualified by Oerlikon LeyboldVacuum is recommended.

When using third party oils, the oilchange intervals and the performanceof the vacuum pump may be reduced. Also unwanted deposits may occurwhich may cause severe damage tothe vacuum pump.

Our oils are subjected to an involvedqualification process with respect totheir technical suitability in our vacuumpumps. Our warranty commitment is depen-dent on the usage of lubricating oilswhich are specifically qualified by us.

No liability will be assumed for any kindof damage caused through the usageof types of oil which have not beenqualified or which are unsuitable.

In order to adapt the pumps to thedifferent applications of our customers, different types of oil are used in ourvacuum pump series.

Please note that owing to differingproperties not all types of oil may beused in all our vacuum pump series. Ifyou can not find the combination ofpump and oil you require by way of aPart No., please ask us for a quo-tation.

Mineral Oils(LEYBONOL LVO 1XX)

Mineral oils are products distilled andrefined from crude oil. These do notconsist of precisely defined con-stituents but rather consist of a com-plex mixture. The way in which themineral oil is pre-treated and its com-position is decisive as to the applica-tions it will be suited for. Depending onthe distribution of the hydrocarbonsand the dominance of certain pro-perties, mineral oils are grouped accor-ding to paraffin-base, naphthenic andaromatic. For the purpose of attainingespecially low ultimate pressures, mineral oils must be selected on thebasis of a core fraction.

The thermal and chemical resistanceof mineral oils has been found to beadequate in the majority of applica-tions. They offer a high degree ofcompatibility with elastomers andresistance to hydrolysis.

Mineral oils also include the group ofhydrocracked oils. These are frequentlyalso termed semi-synthetic oils. Hydro-cracked oils are produced under avery high hydrogen pressure at hightemperature and are substantially freeof aromatic compounds and olefins.

Hydrocracking oils exhibit a higherthermal stability compared to con-ventional mineral oils. In most casesthe intervals between the oil changescan be extended.

White Oils(LEYBONOL LVO 6XX)

Mineral oils include also the so-calledwhite oils. Medicinal white oils arehighly processed mineral oils which arefree of aromatic compounds as well assulphur compounds. They are colour-less, odourless and contain only satu-rated hydrocarbons.

Page 6: C20E_LEYBONOL

C20 Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum Full Line Catalogue06

Synthetic Oils

Synthetic oils are produced throughchemical reactions. The group ofsynthetic oils includes liquids differingwidely as to their chemical structureand composition. Correspondingly, their physical and chemical propertiesdiffer considerably. Synthetic oils areused in those cases where specialproperties of the oil are required whichcan not be fulfilled by mineral oils.

Synthetic oils are among others:

Ester Oils(LEYBONOL LVO 2XX)

Ester oils are organic compoundswhich excel especially through theirhigh thermal resistance to crackingcompared to mineral oils. Chemicalresistance is generally quite good, butwill depend on the type of ester oil.Elastomer compatibility and resistanceagainst hydrolysis are not so goodcompared to mineral oils.

They should not be used when pum-ping acids, halogens or alkaline medialike ammonia in connection with humi-dity.

Polyalfaolefins (PAO)(LEYBONOL LVO 3XX)

Polyalphaolefin oils are synthetic hydro-carbons which are paraffin like, buthave a uniform structure. Thermal andchemical resistance is better comparedto mineral oils.

Owing to their good flowing propertieswhen cold they can be used at lowtemperatures.

Elastomer compatibility and resistanceagainst hydrolysis are comparable tomineral oils.

Perfluoropolyether (PFPE)(LEYBONOL LVO 4XX)

These are oils which are only com-posed of carbon (C), fluorine (F) andoxygen (O) atoms. The existing C-O and C-F bonds are highly stable. For this reason PFPE oils are practi-cally inert against all chemical andoxidising influences.

Perfluoropolyethers will not polymeriseunder the influence of high energyradiation.

Perfluoropolyethers are used whenpumping strongly oxidative substanceslike oxygen, ozone or nitric oxides aswell as highly reactive substances likehalogens and hydrogen halides. Regar-ding Lewis acids (for example, borontrifluoride BF3, aluminium trichlorideAlCl3) they are not completely inert. Here reactions may take place at tem-peratures over approximately 150 °C.

Perfluoropolyethers are thermally highlystable. PFPE is not flammable. Thermaldecomposition may only take place attemperatures of over 290 °C.

Caution: perfluoropolyethers will –when decomposed – release toxic andcorrosive gases: hydrogen fluoride HF,carbonyl difluoride COF2 amongothers. For this reason open fires mustbe avoided in the workspace wherePFPE is being used. Do not smoke inthe workspace where PFPE is beingused.

Only suitably prepared pumps must beused in connection with perfluoro-polyethers, since it is essential thatthese be free of hydrocarbons.

Changing from one basic type of oil toPFPE must be left exclusively toauthorised Service Centers. Thepumps will have to be fully disassem-bled and carefully cleaned. Gasketsand filters will have to be exchangedand suitable greases will have to beused.

Other Types of Synthetic OilFurther types of synthetic oil like poly-glycols, phosphate esters or siliconeoils are not recommended by us forour forevacuum pumps. These typesof oil exhibit specific properties whichmay have a negative effect when usedin forevacuum pumps.

Pump fluids for oil diffusion pumpsmust exhibit a low vapour pressure atroom temperature and must be able toresist thermal decomposition andoxidization to a large extent. Surfacetension of the pump fluids must behigh to reduce creep of oil films. They

must be chemically inert, exhibit a highflash point and evaporation heat mustbe low. Moreover, the pump fluidsshould permit high pumping speedsover a wide range of pressures and becost effective.

One type of pump fluid alone cannotmeet these comprehensive require-ments.

It is therefore required to select apump fluid according to the operatingpressure and the requirements of theapplication in each case.

Diffusion Pump Oils

Mineral oils(LEYBONOL LVO 5XX)

Mineral oils for diffusion pumps areclosely toleranced fractions of a highquality base product distilled withparticular care.

These pump fluids are especially suitedfor work in a high vacuum.

formance of the grease in specificareas depending on the specificapplication.

As base oils, frequently mineral oils, synthetic oils on the basis of ester oils,PAOs, silicone oils or also PFPE(perfluoropolyethers) are used.Thickeners are roughly categorised insoap thickeners like lithium, for exam-ple and non-soap thickeners likepolyurea or PTFE.

Greases will reduce friction and wear, ensure moveability of components, willseal off against contaminants or areused as anti-rust and anticorrosionagents.

Through the selection of correspondingbase oil types, thickeners and addi-tives, greases can be optimised fordifferent applications.

Greases

(LEYBONOL LVO 8XX)

Greases are solid to semi-solid sub-stances which consist of the principalcomponents base oil and thickener.

The base oil provides most of the lubri-cation and will in most cases definethe service temperature. The thickenerbinds the oil and can increase thelubricity or the thermal stability of thegrease.Added to these two constituences areadditives which may improve the per-

Lubricant Functions

The term “Lubricant” actually discribesonly one of the five important functionsof the oil:

Lubrication

Oil is used as a lubricant helping toreduce friction and provide a protectivefilm against mechanical wear. For example, the vanes of a vacuumpump are forced by the centrifugalforce against the pump ring at a forceof several Newtons. The oil protectsthe vanes against friction since theyslide along on the oil film. When view-ing a running pump from the insideusing stroboscopic light it is apparenthow an oil wave builds up in front ofthe vanes, pressing the vanes awayfrom the pump ring. The vanes nevertouch the pump ring or the bearingcovers allowing the pump to operatefor 10,000s of hours.

Cooling

The oil conducts the heat produced byfriction and gas compression away sothat the pump will always be operatedat its optimum operating temperature. The oil here functions as a coolant.

Means of transport(dispersing properties of oils)

As a means of transport the oilabsorbs process substances or otherparticles keeping them suspended(dispersed). In this way pump sectionsare protected against suffering dam-age. Sludge deposits and oil thickeningshall be avoided.

Corrosion Protection

The oil shall protect the inner pumpsurfaces against corrosion. Corrosioncan occur when the pump is used topump water vapour or other chemicalvapours which condense. The oil wetsand protects the inner pump surfaceshelping to keep condensate away fromthese. The oil acts as a corrosioninhibitor. Applies only to a lesser extent to PFPE(LVO 4XX).

Sealing

As a sealing agent oil improves theattainable ultimate pressure and theattainable pumping speed. This is theprincipal function of vacuum pump oil.Oil-sealed pumps are capable ofattaining a much improved ultimatepressure compared to oil-free rotaryvane pumps of similar construction.

In oil-sealed pumps an oil film iscreated on the guiding components aswell as on the tips and sides of thevanes.

The oil seals the intermediate spacesaround the edges and tips of thevanes thereby preventing gas mole-cules from flowing back through leaks.

This improves the attainable ultimatepressure and the attainable pumpingspeed within all pressure ranges.

General Information and Recommendationsfor Oils

Page 9: C20E_LEYBONOL

Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum Full Line Catalogue C2009

Oil Lifetime

Oil lifetime is dependent on a numberof parameters.

An important influencing factor is thatof the temperature. Mineral oils arecommonly specified for a maximumtemperature limit of 80 °C. Above thistemperature, to put it simply, it can besaid that a temperature increase by10 °C will cut oil lifetime in half. Thisresults in thickening of the oil.Synthetic oils may depending on thetype be operated constantly at 100 to160 °C. PFPE oils can be operatedconstantly at a temperature of 250 °Cmax., however, lower maximumtemperatures need to be taken intoaccount depending on the processmedium.PFPE oils are not subject to any typicaloil ageing since they are almost inert(for this see also the section “Oil Typesfor Forevacuum Pumps”, paragraphPerfluoropolyethers PFPE).

When operating a pump under con-ditions which are too cold, then watervapour or other vapours may con-dense. The condensed liquid may thencause a loss of the lubricating pro-perties or cause corrosion within thepump.

The following parameters amongothers have a direct influence on the oiltemperature:

- Ambient temperature

- Operating pressure

- Operating frequency 50 or 60 Hz

- Temperature of the pumped gases

- Gas ballast type and flow

- Water or air cooling

- Cooling water temperature andcondition of the cooling water circuit

- Oil volume

A further important factor regarding oillifetime is the avoidance of influenceswhich have a modifying effect on theoil like the ingress of reactive or aggre-ssive substances, water vapour, dustor contaminants in general.

For dispersion of process media andcleaning of the oil by oil filters, we offera number of different standard approa-ches.Please contact us.Our experts shall be pleased to assistyou in the selection process for suit-able accessories (for this refer also tothe section “Oil Cleaning”).

Oil Check

The condition of the oil can be de-termined by way of an oil analysis. Assessing the colour of the oil alonedoes not indicate the condition of thelubricant in a conclusive way. Colourchanges and a turbid appearance ofthe oil can be indicative of contami-nation with foreign substances oroxidation. A turbid appearance may beindicative of water, for example.Depending on the type of oil a darkdiscolouration of the oil can occuralready after a few operating hours, but without any negative effects on theapplication as in the case of LVO 210,for example.

For this reason only a comparisonbetween the fresh oil and the used oilthrough an analysis will help (seesection “Services”). For the purpose ofdetecting a necessary oil change, viscosity and the neutralisation number(TAN - total acid number) are analysedin comparison with fresh oil.

Changes in viscosity exceeding 20%necessitate an oil change. If the neu-tralisation number (TAN) in the case ofmineral oils and PAOs increases to alevel of 2 mg KOH/g then an oilchange should be done. Above thisvalue ageing of a mineral oil or PAO willincrease exponentially.

In the case of ester oils, a higherneutralisation number can be acceptedsince here oil ageing will not be expo-nential. However, this requires thattrend analyses confirm a low increaseand that the other oil data beinconspicuous.

Oil Cleaning

Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum offers anumber of different standard oil filterdevices.

These include:

- Mechanical oil filters for depositingdust, crystalline decompositionproducts and sludge

- Chemical oil filters for separatingsubstances dissolved in the oil byway of adsorption to activatedaluminium oxide

- Various separators for the intakeside for avoiding the ingress ofprocess media into the pump

Please contact us.Our experts shall be pleased to assistyou in the selection process forsuitable accessories.Details on the respective pumpaccessories and additional informationcan also be found in the correspondingcatalogue section.

Oxygen Applications

In applications in which pure oxygen oroxygen concentrations exceeding thatin the atmosphere (over 21% by vol-ume) occur, suitable operating meansmust be used.

Oxygen reacts with hydrocarbons. Inconnection with mineral oil based lubri-cants and most synthetic oils thereexists an ignition risk. Oxygen cancause a self-ignition of oils andgreases.

Even a slight oxygen enrichment mayhave the following effects:

- Increase in the rate of combustion

- Combustion temperature increase

- Decreased ignition temperature

For this reason any oxygen concentra-tion above that of the atmosphereneeds to be considered as hazardous.

In such cases a perfluouropolyether(PFPE) will be suitable as the operatingagent.Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum has in itsproduct range special vacuum pumpsspecified for PFPE operation which arefree of hydrocarbons.

Information for SmoothOperation

- Reactive or aggressive substancesin the pumped flow can inadmiss-ibility stress the operating oil ormodify it and may even be incom-patible with the materials of thepump

- Even small quantities of dust or par-ticles can result in failures

- Pumping of liquids is not permis-sible

- Corrosion, deposits and severe oilcracking can cause a pump failure

- Avoid standstill corrosion of thepumps for all processes which in-volve condensable vapours

- Small quantities of water may beejected safely by operating thepumps with their gas ballast

- Avoidance of oil modifying influen-ces or incresed number of oilchange intervals adapted to thespecific application

- Selection of the optimum lubricanttype and optimum viscosity

- Regular checks on the oil conditionand the filters

- Pump maintenance in regularintervals

- Keep thermal stresses low

- Oil cleaning by oil filters andseparation of process media

Moreover, all safety regulations regard-ing explosion protection need to beobserved.

AdditivesAdditives are oil soluble substanceswhich can be added in low concen-trations to the lubricants so as to im-prove certain properties. Frequentlyadditives serve the purpose of improv-ing, respectively avoiding oxidation, wear, corrosion, fluidity and foaming. Not all additives are suited for vacuumapplications. Some additives exhibit ahigh vapour pressure thereby having anegative influence on the attainableultimate pressure.

BAMSome products from the LEYBONOLline have been registered at the Bun–desanstalt für Materialforschung und-prüfung. (I.e. the Federal Institute forMaterials Research and Testing in Ger–many.)

CFR (Code of Federal Regulations)in the USA.

ColourFor this refer to “Visual appearance”.

DensityThe density of a substance is definedas the ratio between its mass and itsvolume at a certain temperature. Itdepends on the chemical compositionof a product.International unit of measurement:kg/m3.

Dropping pointThe dropping point designates thetemperature at which a lubricatinggrease begins to flow.

ElastomersElastomers are cross-linked polymerscapable of reversibly absorbing sig-nificant deformations. Elastomers areused as the sealing material for shaftsealing rings or O-rings, for example.

Infrared measurement (IR)Through the natural vibrations of theatoms of certain groups of organicmolecules, the energy of the emittedinfrared light is absorbed to differentextents. Based on an infrared spectrum it ispossible to assess the following criteriaamong others:

- Detection of the type of oil (mineraloil, ester oil, PFPE, for example) bycomparison against referencespectra

- Detection of contaminants in com-parison with the fresh oil spectrum

ISO viscosity gradeClassification of liquid industrial lubri-cants in 20 viscosity grades based onthe kinematic viscosity at 40 °C in therange of 2 mm2/s to 3200 mm2/s.Abbreviation: ISO VGSee Table1.

Neutralisation numberThe neutralisation number indicates thequantity of potassium hydroxide (KOH)required to neutralise the free acidconstituents contained in 1 g of a lubri-cant. Through the neutralisation num-ber it is possible to determine therelative changes for used lubricantssuffering from oxidative ageing. Theincrease in the neutralisation number incombination with the viscosity changeare needed to assess the oil quality.See also “TAN”.

NSF (National Sanitation Foundation/Nonfood Compounds RegistrationProgram)Non-food components registration pro-gram for all substances used in thefood industry like lubricants, forexample.

The following belong among others tothe group of elastomers:EPDMEthylene propylene diene monomerrubber EPDMUsable up to 150 °C, partly suited forglycol ether based brake fluids, notsuited for mineral oils and ester oils.FKMFluor rubber FKM (trade nameVITON®, for example)Usable up to 200 °C, suited for mine-ral oils and ester oils, not suited forglycol ether based brake fluids.

NBRAcrylonitrile-butadiene rubber NBR(trade name PERBUNAN®, forexample)Usable up to 100 °C, only NBR with ahigh share of acrylonitrile is suited formineral oils and ester oils, not suitedfor glycol ether based brake fluids.

FDA (Food and Drug Administration)Food and Drug Administration in theUSA responsible for the approval ofsubstances on the US Americanmarket.

Flash pointFlash point is the lowest temperatureat which a liquid which is to be testeddevelops vapours in an open, respec-tively sealed crucible to such an extentthat this vapour/air mixture above theliquid level can be briefly ignited by anexternal ignition.

FoamingIt is normal for oils in vacuum pumpsto foam slightly upon the ingress of airthrough the gas ballast, for example.Under normal conditions this will nothave any effect on the pump’s perfor-mance.

OdourLubricants when new exhibit a mildodour. Mineral oils will usually developa more intensive odour compared tosynthetic oils. Contamination withforeign substances or lubricant reac-tions can cause a significant odourchange.

Oil ageingCommon lubricants cannot be used foran unlimited time. Lubricants worsenduring use, i.e. they age. This ageing iscaused, among other things, by tem-perature, oxidation, chemical and phy-sical reactions with process media. This can result in the formation ofsludge, resins or acids (for this seealso Section “General information andRecommendations for Oils”, paragraph“Oil check”)

Pour pointThe pour point is the lowest tempera-ture at which oil is still capable of flow-ing.

RoHS (Restriction of (the use ofcertain) hazardous substances)Directive on the Restriction of the useof certain Hazardous Substances inelectrical and electronic equipment

TANThe designation TAN (Total Acid Num-ber) is frequently used instead of thedesignation neutralisation number. For details see “Neutralisationnumber”.

ThickenerA thickener binds the oil in the lubrica-ting grease and may increase lubricityor thermal stability of the grease.Thickeners are roughly categorised insoap thickeners like lithium and non-soap thickeners like polyurea or PTFE.

USDAUnited States Department of Agricul-ture (in charge of food safety amongother things).

b) Kinematic viscosityThe ratio between dynamic viscosityand density is defined as kinematicviscosity. Generally kinematic viscosityis measured at 40 °C and 100 °C.International unit of measurement:mm2/s.This value corresponds to the formerunit of measurement: cSt.

Visual appearanceThe visual appearance of the lubricantshould be clear and clean. The colourof the new lubricant substances willnormally range from colourless toamber. Changes in colour and turbiditycan be indicative of a contaminationwith foreign substances or oxidation.Turbidity, for example, may indicate thepresence of water. However, the colouralone is not conclusive as to thecondition of the lubricant.

VOCVolatile Organic Compound.

WaterA high water content can impair thelubricity of the lubricant being usedand may have a negative influence onthe attainable ultimate pressure.Should the oil/water emulsion remain inthe pump then this can lead tocorrosion.

Wearing metalsWearing materials like iron, aluminiumcopper can be detected by measure-ments. Wearing metals present in theoil allow conclusions as to abrasive orcorrosive wear.

Vapour pressureThe vapour pressure is the ambientpressure below which a liquid beginsto change in to the gaseous state withthe temperature being constant.

ViscosityViscosity is a measure of the amountof inner friction within a fluid. Thedevelopment of hydrodynamicallysupporting films of oil, optimum oilconveying, sealing and lubricating andalso the supply of heat require opti-mum viscosities. These need to bewithin certain ranges depending on thespecific purpose of the application.

Viscosity is much temperature depen-dent. At increasing temperatures vis-cosity reduces, i.e. the lubricant sub-stance is less viscous.

When the oil is too thick at operatingtemperature it will no longer flowthrough the oil lines resulting in inade-quate lubrication thereby causingdamage. The result is a rapid increasein wear and an impaired ultimatepressure.

During operation the viscosity maychange owing to:

- Lubricant ageing

- Ingress of foreign substances

- Reaction of the lubricant substancewith the process media

a) Dynamic viscosityThe Newtonian definition of viscosityrelates to the true viscosity. It is alsotermed dynamic viscosity.International unit of measurement:mPasThis value corresponds to the formerunit of measurement: cP
