INTRODUCTION

The CrossoverThis unique Low Impedance Compen-

sated Crossover (LICC) design placesinductors in series with the woofer whosevalues are markedly lower than conven-tional designs. This reduces the amount ofenergy that is typically wasted as heat andincreases the amount of energy that istransformed into real acoustic power. It alsoincorporates dynamic protection for thecompression driver from non-linear signals.

The CabinetThe C200 cabinet was designed to be the

strongest molded composite cabinet on theplanet. This material is as strong as con-crete, and rigid enough to preventunwanted vibrations and standing waves inthe cabinet. It has built-in fly points forhanging, and a socket in the bottom formounting on a tripod stand. Although it isan exceptional choice for installed soundsituations, its light weight and durable fin-ish also make it ideal for portable soundsystem use. The asymmetrical trapezoidaldesign of the cabinet also makes it easy touse as a floor wedge for stage monitor appli-cations.

The C200 offers a portable, lightweightsolution for a variety of high-poweredsound reinforcement applications.

Thank you for choosing the Mackie C200sound reinforcement loudspeakers.

The C200 is a portable two-way loud-speaker system, specifically designed tocomplement our PPM Series line of profes-sional powered mixers. They are capable ofextremely high sound pressure levels, anddesigned to give you the best performance ofany portable compact loudspeaker in itsclass and price range.

The TransducersThe C200 features a 10-inch high-power

low-frequency woofer and a 1.4-inch tita-nium diaphragm high-output compressiondriver. The woofer incorporates technologyused in large-format touring systems and, with a precision 2-inch voice coil, is virtu-ally indestructible.

The high-frequency compression driveris mounted on an acoustically non-resonantexponential waveguide, providing a wide, controlled dispersion pattern and precise re-production of the critical upper mid-rangeand high-frequencies. The result is an unbe-lievably smooth off-axis response that allowseveryone in the audience to experience thesame high-resolution audio no matterwhere they are seated.

Each driver has been specifically designedby our engineers for optimum performancein a lightweight high-strength cabinet.

The C200 can beused with a MackieSWA1501 (or SWA1801)subwoofer to create anincredibly powerfulsystem.

The active crossoverinside the subwoofersplits the full-rangestereo input signal intotwo ranges. The SWA1501sums the left and rightlow-frequency rangeand plays it through itsbuilt-in amplifier and15-inch woofer. It sendsthe stereo high-pass rangeto the C200s, via an ex-ternal power amplifier.

The C200 can be polemounted on top of theSWA1501 or 1801 asshown.

CONNECTIONSThe C200 has 1/4˝ TS and Speakon™-

style INPUT and THRU connectors. Theconnectors are wired in parallel, so use onlyone of the input connectors (either 1/4˝ TSor Speakon-style).

INPUT THRUPARALLEL

C200 Connector Panel

Normally, you would use only oneTHRU connector, but it is possible to useboth THRU connectors. Keep in mind thatall the speakers are connected in parallel, soyou want to be sure not to go below theminimum impedance requirements foryour amplifier.

The C200 has a nominalimpedance of 8 ohms.Two C200s in parallelequals 4 ohms.Three C200s in parallelequals 2.7 ohms.Four C200s in parallelequals 2 ohms.

Use high-quality speaker cable as recom-mended by the manufacturer.

DO NOT use coaxialshielded cable like a gui-tar cord to make speakerconnections. They arenot designed to handlethe high currents re-quired to drive aloudspeaker.

PLACEMENTThe C200 loudspeakers are designed to sit

on the floor, a tabletop, or to fit on a standardtripod speaker stand. They can also be sus-pended by the rigging points, which requiresinstalling the optional accessory plates onthe top and bottom of the cabinet.

You can lay the cabinet down on its sideand use the C200 as a floor monitor. Theasymmetrical trapezoidal shape of the cabinetprovides a perfect angle for aiming up towardperformers from the front of the stage.

Warning: Do not stackspeakers in a column. This is to avoid thedanger of topplingspeakers.

As with any loudspeakers, protect themfrom moisture. If you are setting them upoutdoors, make sure they are under cover ifyou expect rain.

Room AcousticsThe C200 loudspeakers are designed to

sound as neutral as possible; that is, to re-produce the input signal as accurately aspossible, monitoring the audio signal ratherthan changing it.

Room acoustics play a crucial role in theoverall performance of a sound system. However, the wide high-frequency dispersionof the C200 helps to minimize the problemsthat typically arise.

Top

900 Dispersionup to 20 kHz

900

Here are some other placement tips:• Avoid placing loudspeakers in the

corners of a room. This increases thelow frequency output and can cause thesound to be muddy and indistinct.

• Avoid placing loudspeakers against awall. This, too, increases the lowfrequency output, though not as muchas corner placement. However, if you doneed to reinforce the low frequencies, this is a good way to do it.

• Avoid placing the speakers directly on ahollow stage floor. A hollow stage canresonate at certain frequencies, causingpeaks and dips in the frequency re-sponse of the room. It’s better to placethe loudspeakers on a sturdy table ortripod stands.

• Position the loudspeakers so the high-frequency drivers are 2 to 4 feet aboveear level for the audience (make allow-ances for a standing/dancing in theaisles audience). High frequencies arehighly directional and tend to be absorbedmuch easier than lower frequencies. Byproviding direct line-of-sight from theloudspeakers to the audience, youincrease the overall brightness andintelligibility of the sound system.

• Highly reverberant rooms, like manygymnasiums and auditoriums, are anightmare for sound system intelligibil-

ity. Multiple reflections off the hardwalls, ceiling, and floor play havoc withthe sound. Depending on the situation, you may be able to take some steps tominimize the reflections, such asputting carpeting on the floors, closingdraperies to cover large glass windows,or hanging tapestries or other materialson the walls to absorb some of the sound. However, in most cases, these remediesare not possible or practical. So what doyou do? Making the sound systemlouder generally doesn’t work becausethe reflections become louder, too. Thebest approach is to provide as muchdirect sound coverage to the audience aspossible. The farther away you are fromthe speaker, the more prominent will bethe reflected sound.Use more speakers strategically placedso they are closer to the back of theaudience. If the distance between thefront and back speakers is more thanabout 100 feet, you should use a delayprocessor to time-align the sound.(Since sound travels about 1 foot permillisecond, it takes about 1/10 of asecond to travel 100 feet.)

RIGGINGThe C200 cabinets are fitted with four

M5 insert points on the top and bottom forinstalling an optional accessory plate thatallows the speaker to be flown.

WARNING: Never at-tempt to suspend theC200 loudspeakers bytheir handles. If you wantto suspend them, use the

accessory plate only. Consult a professionalrigger or structural engineer prior to sus-pending loudspeakers from a structure notintended for that use. Always know theworking load limit of the structure support-ing the loudspeaker array. Always makesure that the rigging hardware minimumrating is at least five times the actual load.

Poor bass performance

• Check the polarity of the connectionsbetween the amplifier and the loud-speakers. You may have your positiveand negative connections reversed atone end of one cable.

It hurts when I touch my arm, or my leg,or even my head!

• You have a broken finger.

Bad sound!

• Is it loud and distorted? Follow theprocedures described in the “QuickStart” section to verify that the levelsare set properly.

• Are all the connections secure? It’s agood idea to periodically clean allelectrical connections with a non-lubricating electrical contact cleaner.

• Keep practicing.

SERVICE INFO

Warranty ServiceDetails concerning Warranty Service are

spelled out on page 11 of this manual. If you think your loudspeaker has a

problem, please do everything you can toconfirm it before calling for service, includ-ing reading through the followingTroubleshooting section. Doing so mightsave you from being deprived of yourMackie loudspeaker.

Of all Mackie products returned for ser-vice (which is hardly any at all), many arecoded “CND” — Could Not Duplicate, which usually means the problem lay some-where else in the system. These may soundobvious to you, but here are some thingsyou can check:

Troubleshooting

No sound!• Are the level controls on the mixer or

amplifier turned all the way down?Follow the procedures in the “QuickStart” section on page 4 to verify that allthe volume controls in the system areproperly adjusted.

• Is the signal source working (and makingunion scale)? Make sure all the connect-ing cables are in good repair and securelyconnected at both ends.

One side is way louder than the other!• Are the level controls set the same for

both channels on the mixer and ampli-fier?

• Check the PAN control on the signalsource. It may be turned too far to oneside. If you’re using a stereo signalsource, it may be delivering an out-of-balance stereo signal.

• Try swapping sides: Switch the speakercables coming from the amplifier at theamplifier end. If the other side is loudernow, the problem is with the amplifier, the mixer, or the signal source.

CARE AND MAINTENANCEYour Mackie loudspeakers will provide

many years of reliable service if you followthese simple guidelines:• Avoid exposing the loudspeakers to

moisture. If they are set up outdoors, besure they are under cover if you expectrain.

• Avoid exposure to extreme cold (belowfreezing temperatures). If you mustoperate the loudspeakers in a coldenvironment, warm up the voice coilsslowly by sending a low-level signalthrough them for about 15 minutesprior to high-power operation.

• Use a slightly damp cloth with a mildsoap solution to clean the cabinets.Avoid getting moisture into any of theopenings of the cabinet, particularlywhere the drivers are located.

4. Pack the loudspeaker in its originalpackage, including protective wrap, endcaps and box. This is very impor-tant. Do not use styrofoam peanuts! When you call for the RA number, pleaselet Tech Support know if you need newpackaging. Mackie is not responsible forany damage that occurs due to non-factory packaging.

5. Include a legible note stating your name, shipping address (no P.O. boxes),daytime phone number, RA number, and a detailed description of the prob-lem, including how we can duplicate it.

6. Write the RA number in BIG PRINTon top of the box.

7. Ship the loudspeaker to us. We suggestinsurance for all forms of cartage. Shipto this address:
