Lost and Found Talents The Midtown Academy Winter Concert By Kia Davis At Midtown Academy, talents have been discovered by the Theater Club, intermediate and primary music club, and the 6 th grade students. This occurred at the Midtown Academy Winter Concert. It was the best experience that you would ever hear and see in your whole entire life! This little concert took place at Midtown Academy on December 23, 2010. Getting ready for the winter holiday, the students sang songs such as “Silver Bells,” “Bashana,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and much more. We also had performances by Zhanae Bailey-El , Naomie Parker, Avery Willams, and Amber Shaw. They all performed monologues on stage. Some monologues were about piercing ears, science class, green hair, and camping trips. The talented teacher that led all of these performances was Midtown’s music teacher Ms. Hurlbert. Ms Hurlbert came to Midtown in 2008. I know that students are learning a lot from her because 6 th grade students remember songs from elementary school. Students really pay attention and remember everything that she teaches. Midtown Academy has many talents—some just have to be discovered. If you have a hidden talent, try to sign up for the theater elective or, if you want your talent to be shown just by your voice, then ask Mrs. Hurlbert and she can help you out and fit you in the intermediate and primary. Or, if you’re older, you can try to sing at a staple meeting or a concert like we just had. I personally thank Ms.Hurlbert for bringing some music styles to Midtown and for helping us to make our voices stronger! The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010 by Aaron BerryOn December 10th on ABC, television personality Barbara Walters hosted her annual television special, which covers ten people that she personally found the most interesting in the year 2010.

Walters has reported many stories in both politics and pop culture over the years, but until 1996, she was unable to sit down in the company of these people and praise them for the work that they have done over the course of that year. This year, the honorees that she chose were: the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore, actress and vocalist Jennifer Lopez, actress Sandra Bullock, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, 88-year-old comedienne Betty White, future princess of England Kate Middleton, NBA star LeBron James, Army general and Chiliad Square bombing survivor David Petraeus, pop star Justin Beiber, and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

For a full hour, Walters spoke with these people and asked their opinion on their own “new-found recognition,” and how they are quickly becoming a general subject of conversation. When she asked Jersey Shore cast member Michael Sorrientino (better known as “The Situation”) about his new-found celebrity, he replied: “Honestly, I didn’t expect this much [popularity]. It’s kind of like how Greta Garbo became famous unexpectedly back in the ‘40s. This creepy feeling of fame befell on us and we were just like ‘Wait a second, we now have a cult following.’ It just surprised me totally, but I got used to it.” This phrase stuck with Barbara and the audience.

Do you agree with her choices?

Pack Some Peace in Your Summer By Makhai FahieHave you ever wondered where you were going for your summer? St. Francis Peace Camp is a great camp for people who want to participate in helping your community with peace, teamwork, and helping the Earth.

Actions that the Peace Camp community are committed to include serving their community and having fun! They have been going to plant composts, cleaning up trash, and taking trips to Washington D.C. to hold up posters for peace. We are also taught about leaders who showed that peace is the solution to life’s hardest times. On Mondays and Wednesdays, we would go to the local pool and have arts and crafts. At the end of the summer, we would have a performance for each group, and best of all, IT’S FREE!

We also go on field trips to Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and to places with wildlife and grass. If you’re interested in joining this camp, the camp begins in early June on 501 East Chase Street Baltimore, MD. The phone number is 410-539-5794. This is not an overnight camp, so don’t worry about not spending time with your family. Pack your bags because summer is right around the corner!

Students from Peace Camp visit the White House in Washington, D.C.

Batwayne by Nigel Gustave Batman or Bruce Wayne? He has many, many different names like: The Dark Knight, Cap Crusader, and The World’s Greatest Detective. Batman was created by Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger in 1939. Batman is a fictional character that appeared in most of the DC comics. Batman’s scepter identity is… Bruce Wayne!! Bruce Wayne is a million dollar playboy. Ever since he witnessed his parents die at the hand of crime, he swore to stop crime. Bruce trained endlessly to become the tough crime fighter he is today.

Batman, as you know, operates in Gotham City. Batman has a lot of notorious crime lords as enemies, like The Penguin, Two Face, or everybody’s favorite, The Joker. But you have to know about his partnerships, like with the most famous, Robin, his young protégé. But you can’t forget his butler, Alfred Pennyworth, also Superman, Batgirl, and Spiderman. You may know that Batman has absolutely no super power, as Superman or Spiderman. Batman has many talents like high human strength, master strategist, and high human smartness.

Poet’s CornerAnother New Year… By Isagani D.InocentesThe Chinese New Year is probably themost important holiday in Chineseculture. This year, it is the year of therabbit and is celebrated by MainlandChina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau,Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and also certain Chinatowns. TheChinese New Year is celebrated on 15 days. People in China believe that on the 7th day of the New Year, people all over China grow a year older. Other traditions are: that only married couples are allowed to give children a special gift called, “Ang Pow,” which is red envelopes containing money usually used to buy holiday treats. A superstition follows, that if all of the money is added up, the amount can never be odd because odd numbers are usually associated with death.

The origin of the holiday began with an old myth. The legend was, a terrible beast called Nian, would terrorize a small town at the end of the Year. He had a gigantic mouth, which he used to swallow people alive. Then one day, an old man came to rescue the town by trying to restrain Nian. He told Nian if he is capable of swallowing other creatures of Earth and not just people. Nian accepted the challenge and he swallowed other creatures that had terrorized humankind. When Nian came back, he learned that the old man was in fact, a god. He also heard that before he left, the old man told the people to put red paper decorations on their houses because Nian is afraid of the color red. From then on, every Chinese New Year’s Eve, families would put up red banners to scare away Nian. They named the holiday, “The Passing of the New Year.” (Nian meant Year in Chinese)

Pass The Torch, or Should I Say Puppet?By Noah ParkerHere at Midtown, a 5th grade tradition is to have a puppet show, sponsoring Black Cherry Puppet Theatre. This is a special occasion for all of us at Midtown. I’m a 6th grade student at Midtown, and last year I experienced this puppet show and you have my word that it is extremely fun. Now I will explain how the making of the puppet is done. You start with a slab of wet newspaper, (don’t wet this one!) and then mold it into your desirable shape, for the puppets head. Next you use the same material to make its hands. Afterwards you smooth out the rough surface of the puppet. Then you pick out different objects for its facial features. The Puppet Theatre does the rest of the job.

A big part of the puppet show is the set. For the puppet show, there is a field trip where you go to the Black Cherry Puppet Theatre, so you can paint the set for the play. This was one of the most fun experiences I, myself, had in 5th grade. Once you have finished that you move on to the script, which you and your group created. Then obviously, you rehearse the play over, and over, and over, again. Finally (the most fun part) perform the play! The play is scheduled for January 28th for the in-school performance, and January 31st for the parent night show. I hope you enjoyed this article, and we’ll see you soon!

No HandsBaltimore goes “Hands Free”Did you know that being on the phone while driving is illegal in Maryland? You cannot talk and drive at the same time. There are a lot of deaths that can be saved if you stop talking on the phone and driving at the same time.

Instead of talking on the phone while driving, there are devices called Hands Free Link, and a device that goes in your ear which is called a Bluetooth. How it works is you can install the Hands Free Link in your car or you can have a Bluetooth hooked up to your phone to go in your ear. Bluetooths come in many different styles. It comes in circled, squared, and much more. Also, it comes in many different colors such as black, blue, purple, etc.

Enforcement began Oct. 1, 2010. If anyone disobeys, you can get fines between $40 and $100. Hand held cell phones are banned for all drivers. This enforcement has been passed by the Maryland House and Senate.

These are what some Baltimore citizens have to say about what they think on this law.

Mr. Redoney: when I see someone texting in my neighborhood, I key their car.

Ms. Mahlin: I voted for Martin O’Malley. It’s great that he passed a law for not texting and not using the cell phone when the car is in motion.

Mr. Seitz: cell phone drivers show a wanton disregard for the rights and safety of others. They are potential killers who don’t care. The law allows me to defend myself if I feel my life is in danger. I intend to.

I think that this law will help decrease the car crashes that occur in many states, such as our state Maryland, and the United Kingdom which has similar laws. Talking on the phone is very dangerous and can cause many deaths by not paying attention. I also think that at many different phone stores, you can get Bluetooths and Hands Free Links for good prices/deals. I Thank You for listening to my concerns and I hope you will take them into consideration!

A Secret KillerBy Suraphael MbonisiYou pick up a large Big Mac with 40 grams of pure fat and with 550 calories that will have after affects the next morning in your stomach. These are the key factors to death... of your health. Eating unhealthy foods will have a 75 percent chance of ruining your athletic life. Obesity is the common killer in our country. Exercise is the super hero to obesity and the key to good health.

Now what I said before might have hurt your feelings or have scared you but that is not my intention. I’m only here to inform you of potential dangers a bad habit can cause. My opinion is that people can use the excuse that they can’t control themselves. About 300,000 deaths each year are caused by obesity. But this doesn’t mean you want to not provide the nutrition needed for your body. It means to be aware of your diet and to get the proper exercise. These are some of the ways you can get in shape, lose weight, and/or gain a little weight.

Get in shape/lose weight: If you are 14 or older you can lift weights You can run/jog You can walk in the park

Gain weight: Foods loaded with carbohydrates like whole wheat

bread provide bulkiness to the body but still is healthy

BadPowersBy Nigel Gustave Fly: laugh at people while flying Super Strength: always win in wrestling Super Speed: steel hot dogs without anybody

knowing Mind Control: make them your slave Balding: make your enemies bald and ugly Shape Shifting: confuse people

If you could have any of the powers above, which one would you use? I would personally choose balding because I could laugh at everybody and make every one look ugly. WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE???

Makhai (6th) Mind Control because I could use telekinesis Leah (6th) I’ve always wanted to fly and soar!Noah (6th) Super speed because I can finally say this line “You want to see me run around the world, want to see me do it again?”Isagani (6th) I would choose balding because it would be cool to make enemies ugly and bald.

The Photography of Mr. MichelsBy Tyla Clements

Q: When did you get interested in photography?Mr. Michels: I was in 5th grade when I got my firstcamera. It was a cheap plastic Kodak Instamatic. Thesecond I saw my first pictures back from beingdeveloped, I was hooked and haven’t stopped shootingsince.

Q: Did anyone inspire you to become a photographer?A: I have an older cousin named Keith who is aphotographer and I really looked up to him. I was alsoamazed at magazines like LIFE Magazine and NationalGeographic that feature incredible photography fromaround the world. They are still around today and stillincredible.

Q; What do you like to photograph?A: My favorite photography is candid people shots. I liketo capture people acting naturally in their ownenvironment in an artful way. One of my goals in life isto take pictures all around the world of different culturesand use them to educate others; open peoples eyes to abigger world.

Q: What type of camera do you prefer?A: This is a hard question for me. My true love is a filmcamera loaded with black and white film. Lately though,I have had a great time getting to know my digitalcamera and all of the benefits that come with it.  In allhonesty, it doesn’t really matter what kind of camera youuse, it is your passion and your eye that will capture thebest images.

Q: Do you use a computer to alter your images?A: With digital photography there is always a need to do a little adjusting to make the images perfect, like with color and contrast. I will rarely adjust an image so much that it changes what was originally there. I like to stay as pure as possible to the image I saw in the camera. Though sometimes it is fun to stick someone else’s head on the wrong body or do something like that just for laughs.

Q: Is color important in your photography?A: I actually prefer to shoot black and white, so color is no issue there. But when I do shoot color, yes, it is very important to get the colors to “speak” for the image. Sometimes the smallest detail of color can make the whole image incredible.

Q: Who are some famous photographers whose work you admire?A: It is hard to say who I admire most, but currently my top four would be photographers John Isaac and Reza for their international people images, Ansel Adams for his black and white landscapes, and Robert Capa for his human nature photographs.

Above: Mr. Michels’ favorite shot, taken in Madras, India in 1991.

Right: Mr. Michels shoots in Otovalo, Ecuador in an outdoor market in 2007.

Charity Harvest Gets Stranded on an Island with Fourteen Robot Monkeys!By Lily O’Hara and Maya Ashley

Once upon a time there was a girl named Charity Harvest. She loved to read about robots attacking the universe.

One day she went on a family trip to the Bahamas. But when the family arrived, Charity wasn’t with them. She had landed on a different island and as soon as she got there, a robot monkey that looked like Ray Lewis came up to herand said, “Do you like the Ravens football team?”

Charity asked the robot, “What are you?” Then she screamed. “Aghhhh!” She began to run and the robot chased her. Then it stopped and went into a dark hole by a cave. Charity panted, and then realized that she was on an island surrounded by water. She began to cry. She cried for about twenty minutes, and then somebody tapped her. She looked over her shoulder and saw another robot monkey. She screamed, but the monkey put a package on her lap andran away.

Charity picked up the package. It was about the size of an apple, it was wrapped in leaves and it had a blade of grass around it. She opened it and there was a coconut inside. Then she opened up the coconut and inside she found a slip ofpaper and three acorns. “Strange,” she said out loud. She decided to explore the island.

As Charity walked, she saw some trees, grass, caves and rocks. “Nothing interesting,” she said. But she still had the coconut in her hand, so she opened it up again and read the slip of paper. “Come here. Welcome,” it said. “Where do they want me to go?” she wondered. “I’ve explored most of the island and I don’t know what else there is.” She picked a banana off a tree and found a patch of grass and sat down. “Good thing I am a girl scout,” she said. “I know how tobuild a fire.”

She built a fire and sat down to think. She had met a RayLewis robot monkey, and gotten a secret message fromanother robot monkey…

The next morning she woke up surrounded by fourteenrobot monkeys. “Aghhhhhh!” she screamed. The monkeystold her to follow a path down a sandy field, and Charityasked, “What path?” Instead of answering, the monkeysstomped on her banana and scurried away. Once again,Charity began to cry. Then she got up and looked around.Suddenly, she saw another strange gift. “Howdy, this isadventurous,” said Charity. She opened the gift and thepath appeared. She followed the path and it led to abuilding. The building led to an airplane. Charity got onthe plane and saw her family. She hugged them and said,“You’ll never believe this story …”
