Tweens and teensFrom Boneshakers to
Choppers: the rip-roar-ing history of motorcy-cles by Lisa Smedman.Toronto: Annick Press,2007, 124 pages, $14.95paperback
A friend of mine, who isthe principal of a large
secondary school in theGTA, hinted that for her50th birthday she’d like amotorcycle. The big daycame and her husbandand four grown daughtershanded her the keys to abrand new Harley-Davidson!
We know them all —kids in tattered jeans ontrail bikes, Italian busi-nessmen in high-fashionsuits on sleek littleVespas, hippies of the ’60son “choppers,” bikergangs in black leatherand chains on monstermachines, law-abidingseniors cruising sedatelyinto town for a pit stop atTim’s — our love affair
with motorized wheelsnever ends. If you or yourkids have ever gazedlongingly at a really coolbike’s chrome, leather, power and pizzazz, you’lllove this book.
Vancouver author LisaSmedman indulges herown passion for motorcy-cles in 120 pages of amaz-ing photographs, vintageads, information boxesand succinct, clearly pre-sented text. She coversthe history and evolutionof the production andmarketing of bikes, bikesin wartime, outlaw gangs, biker jargon, stuntmen, biking as an extremesport and as a hobby for
anyone. A bibliographyand index are included.Fascinating to look at,fun to read, Boneshakersto Choppers will havewide appeal.
Family fare211 Things a Bright
Boy Can Do by TomCutler. London:HarperCollins, 2006,300 pages, $23.95 hard-cover
Red Rose tea may beavailable “only inCanada,” as the sadBritish voice used tolament on a popular TVcommercial, but it’s onlyin Britain that one findswriters like Tom Cutler.
With that classicRabelaisian humour forwhich the Brits arefamous, or maybe infa-mous, he brings us ahandbook of activities, advice and admonitionswhich, in his own words, are “aimed chiefly atboys, guys, geezers, blokes and fellows
between the ages of about16 and 106 who findthemselves at a loose endon a wet Wednesdayafternoon.”
The blatantly sexisttitle seems destined totempt female readers tosecretly flip the pages ofthis allegedly “boys” bookand when they do, they’lllaugh just as shamelesslyas the guys at the gags, titillating trivia, practicaljokes and earthy humour.Actually, everyone canpick up some useful tipshere on such pastimes ascanoeing, fishing, camp-ing, cooking and crafts, but only if you can stopguffawing long enoughwhile reading lines like“exactly when it was thatthe idea bulb went onover the head of the firstfart lighter is lost in themists of time. Perhapsone of our Neanderthalancestors let rip too closeto the fire and shed a sur-prising light on a new
world of cheap entertain-ment,” or “some chapshave a desire to flourish afreshly killed snake fortheir photograph albums.Don’t fall for this one. Many a pith-helmetedhero brandishing his killhas been bitten on thenadgers because freshlyexecuted snakes haveexcellent reflex actions.”
The cover, illustrationsand layout of the book area spoof of its serious early20th century counter-parts and the Britishvocabulary — telly, bangers, blokes, gormless— are fun. Leave this onein full view around thecottage this summer. Andyeah, let the kids read itout loud at the dinnertable if they want to,unless of course, GreatAunt Agatha has justbrought them a gilt-edgededition of the CompleteWorks of WilliamShakespeare.
