Photographer Comes T o Student Union in Middle o f Next Month
There was many a wasted hour spent in Room 3 of tho Student Union last week when Mr. Baliban of Merin-Baliban Studios, oflicial photographer for “ ’42 Lexerd,” was here to take the senior pictures. Of a possible 280 seniors there were a mere 75 photographed—not because of any laxity on tho part of the staff but because the students didn’t take five minutes of their time to fill in and return their schedules. By November 17, when Mr. Baliban will return to school, tho staff hopes to have all seniors’ schedules in its hands.
Proof th a t a good studio was chosen to do the work this year is the fact tha t proofs—and good ones— have already been sent out. All tho photographer asks, then, is a little

In recognition of tho superior scholarship of members of tho senior class. Phi Kappa Phi has issued bids to its quota of ten percent of tha t group. Twenty-three students in tho Schools of Engineering, Business Administration, and Homo Economics have been so honored.
Among those chosen from the school of engineering are four chemical engineers — .John Simons, Gilbert Merritt , Harold Hartung, and Glenn F. Kennedy; three mechanical engineers — John G. Clemmer, Carl H. Acker, and Richard H. Fisher; two electrical engineers — J. Paul White and John Palmer; and a civil engineer—Thomas R. Kealey.
From tho school of home economics Jean Billings, Barbara Melvin, Barbara Noble, Elizabeth Ponton, Joan Elizabeth Allen, and Constance Lepley were given bids.
Navy’s XPB2M-1. This identification doesn’t mean much to most people, but it denotes tho world’s largest Hying boat, capable of flying across the Atlantic and back nonstop. This man o’ war of tho air has an interior as large as tha t of a 16-room houso and will carry a lethal load of unprecedented for- midability. Such a massive structure weighs 140,000 pounds, or 70 tons, to make tho figures a little more awo- some.
But President Mart in predicts tho Navy’s air dreadnaught as only the forerunner of greater air might.
“This vessel (tho X PB2M -p marks the transition from tho flying boat to tho flying ship,” he said. “Shi^)s of this typo have a definite place in the Navy’s scheme of things. But seagoing airc raf t of much greater size will bo forthcoming soon. As a matter of fact, our company al ready has plans for a 250,000 pound vessel. Even by multiplying engines of present maximum horsepower wo can a ttain such sizes, but already wo know tha t engine development soon will deliver much more powerful units.”
Some may doubt these words, but wise mon of aviation shook their heads dubiously before, only to see M artin’s predictions materialize.

Herb Galman was elected president of the Drexel Electronic Society at the first oflicial meeting on October 13 ill the society’s laboratory over the cafeteria. Other results of the election were:
Vice-president, Isaac Guerbacli; secretary, James Stewart; treasurer, Irwin Goldstein; equipment engineer, Jedney.
During the business proceedings, it was also decided that similar meetings tliroughout this term will be on a lte rnate Tuesdays.
Following the business procedure, Herb Galman, junior electrical engineer, presented a ta lk and demonstration on tho methods of measuring the percentage modulation of a radio telephone transmitter. Each method was illustrated with actual equipment consisting of a small radio station which was sending out a sixty-cycle audible signal. Tho signal was impressed on the screen of the society’!* caJthode ray oscilloscope, a device used to chock the percent age modulation of the transmitted signal.
The next meeting of tho society will be held in the laboratory on Tuesday, October 28. All electrical engineers interested in radio or vacuum tubes should attend.

Results of the National Scholastic Press Association yearbook contest give the 1941 “Lexerd” first class rating. The contest, sponsored by tho department of journalism at tho University of Minnesota, was judged last September.
Of special interest to the judges was the history section. Mention was also made of tho unusual ondsheets.
Tho “Lexerd” is entered in tho contest each year, in the class of colleges enrolling 1000 to 2499. Honor ratings range from All-Amorican, the top rating, through first, second, third, and fourth class. These ratings aro mado on the basis of appearance, content, general plan, and special sections.

Soph om oren F e a s tLast Tuesday afternoon tho men’s
sophomore class decided to have a “doggie roast” and danco at tho Drexel Lodge on Saturday evening, December 6. Steve Kerr took charge of tho mooting.
Since tho only sophomore class officer in school this term is the troasnror, tho class is handicapped in in it ia ting tho year’s program. However, plans are going forward.
Tho Social Committoo has already s tar ted work on the affair on Do- comber 6. Duane Halvorsen, Tommy Lowo, Charles Potor, Jr., and Charles Gronort comprise tho committoo and aro completing tho urrangomonts for the event.
The sophomore class also dlscuBsea preliminary arrangements for a dance which will take place during tho winter term. Tlio date for this affair will bo disclosed a t a later date.
If you’re curious about life at Drexel fifty years ago, just step into the Museum and you will discover how tho student of tha t day studied and played.
Pictures which cover the fa r wall date from Drexel’s earliest beginning, and show all phases of the first curriculum. Perhaps you will bo tempted to coinparo tho school us it was then with our present Drexel Tech. I t is a fascinating study.
A picture of the Court in 1903 may bo disappointing, for a t first glance it seems to look just like the Court today. There is tho same tiled floor, the same marble stops, and—yea, the same statues! But looking more closely, wo can see a few changes. Tho light bulbs in tho central chan delier have been changed, and tho Winged Victory is on the other end of tho Court.
Strange StylesTho depar tmental divisions show
girls and boys in anklo-length skirts and tight trousers doing the same things tha t hurry our livog today. In tho business section, tho freshmen have puzzled expressions as they pour over their math. The business machines look not as modern, but jus t as confusing, as ours. Girls with twice as much ha ir as they could possibly need and pinchod-in wuistllnos are seated before typewriters of an cient vintage. Library students look through dusty volumes. (Tho picture doesn’t show tho dust, but we know it must bo there.)
By J E A N BILLINGS
It is surpri.sing to find tha t s tu dents in those ancient-looking outfits studied chemistry, but there is a picture which shows an unmistak- ablo chem lab. I t doesn’t look much different from the one on tho third floor. There are rows and rows of bottles, and intr icate tangles of rub ber tubing, bunsen burners, and metal stands. In fact, those bunsen burners aro probably tho same ones wo used when we were freshmen.
Enginoers' ShopsThere is a picture of the engineers’
hideaway. They called them “shops” then instead of “ labs.” But they soem to have as many machines of mysterious appearance then as now. Tho pictures sliow lots of wheels and axles, belts, cogs, and gears, but very few engineering students. Those who were accidentally caught by the camera seem to bo furtively ducking behind tho machines. They aro wearing greasy overalls.
So far, wo think tha t Drexel hasn’t changed much.
Suppose we look a t tho homo economics section. There aro girls with long skirts and in tent expressions looking a t textiles in glass cases. Our skirts arp shorter now, and our expressions perhaps not us intent—but surely those aro tho same textiles we saw in class tho othor day. In tho cooking lab, tho stovos are not stroanilined and tho uniforms look
