In the legislature…

Recently, Sen. Walaska was named “Advocate of the Year” by the ALS Association, RI-Chapter in recognition of his support of efforts to improve the lives of those afflicted by Lou Gehrig’s disease. He has also focused on making services available for those with disabilities, sponsoring legislation promoting transportation for the wheelchair-bound, and initiatives for improving services to the deaf and hearing impaired.

Locally, he has worked to support veterans’ property tax exemptions in Warwick and require air quality monitoring at T.F. Green Airport. He also sponsored legislation to more fairly assess vehicles for car tax purposes.

Clearly, RI economic development and small business owners remain as key issues. During this session he introduced legislation to reinstate the successful “Project Status” program, a tax credit for start-up companies tied to job creation. He sponsored legislation reforming the fire code to make it more flexible and less costly to business, and this year is seeking to further amend the code to reduce bureaucratic hurdles.
