  • A Day in the Life of an Agility Competitor By Megan Fletcher

Kenzie and I recently competed at a trial in

Fredericksburg, VA. It is a really nice, new in-

door soccer complex. I highly recommend the

    facility.

Kenzie can have some issues with making

course time on occasion and it's always in the

back of my mind, whether she will be brave or

shut down on me... she was a rock star this go-

around!! The day started with a jumpers run.

She is at the Excellent Agility levels now and

this will be her second try at an excellent

    course—she Q'd her first time.

I sent her over the warm-up jump and she just sailed over with great speed and really quick maneu-

vering on landing. I felt really good about our run now. We went right in from that warm-up jump

and she again trotted in the ring with enthusiasm and I felt great.

She sailed around the course with time to spare and we earned our second Q! Woohoo!!! I took her

back to her crate for a quick rest before standard, while I ran my other dog (he was sadly shown-up

by his big little sister - no Q for him).

Twenty minutes later it was time for Kenzie's open standard run. She has had more trouble making

time in standard due to the contacts sometimes eating up her time- she isn't thrilled with some of

the contact equipment... I sent her over the warm-up jump twice and she again felt great- very

good energy- she LOVES her tuna-in-a-can reward and was really working for it! We waited for a

few moments and then we were up.

First obstacle: chute, not her favorite thing. Af-

ter slowly emerging from the chute, she cantered

(she never canters!!) up the dog walk, flew over

some jumps, did the fastest teeter execution she

has ever done (even in practice), did some very

nice weaves with a decent send, then more

jumps. I wasn't where I had planned to be be-

fore the A-frame and ended up with a tunnel/ A

-frame discrimination- she correctly took the

frame (whew!) and finished out the course well

    under time!!

I could not have been more proud of her! She

has really come a long way this year and I hope she only gets better. Not bad for a girl who will

only be turning three in July.

  • C & P Nominating Commit-

tee (continued) c Additional nominations may be made at the September

meeting by any member in attendance, provided that the person so nominated does not decline when their name is proposed, and provided further that if the proposed candi-date is not in attendance at this meeting, the proposer shall present to the Secretary a written statement from the pro-posed candidate signifying willingness to be a candidate. No person may be a candidate for more than one position.

d If no valid additional nominations are offered at the Septem-

ber meeting, the Nominating Committee’s slate shall be de-clared elected and no voting will be required. If one or more valid additional nomination(s) are offered, a vote shall be conducted for these positions only. The candidate receiving the most votes for the voted position shall win.

  • Kids BAROO!

    5

    July 2011

This year, July has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. Check it out! This happens

    once every 823 years.

Also, this year we are experiencing four unusual dates:

    1/1/11

    1/11/11

    11/1/11

    11/11/11

    And that's not all...

Take the last two digits of the year in which you were born - now add the age you

are or will be this year.

The results will be 111 for everyone in whole world (or 11, depending upon your

age)! Try it out with your parents!

Wonder if this works with dogs…

    Ollie Ward-Brainard is a STAR!!

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a program designed to get dog

owners and their puppies off to a good start. The program is an

incentive program for dog owners who have taken the time to

take their puppies through a basic training class. Training classes

teach you how to best communicate with your puppy. Organized

training classes also provide an opportunity for your dog to so-

cialize with other dogs. In classes aimed at earning the AKC

S.T.A.R. Puppy distinction, you’ll be able to get information on

all of your puppy-training questions including housetraining,

chewing, and the most effective way to teach practical skills such

as coming when called. When you complete a basic training class

(taught by an AKC approved CGC evaluator) with your puppy

(up to one year old) your puppy is eligible to be enrolled in the

S.T.A.R. program. S.T.A.R training is a natural lead-in to the

    AKC Canine Good Citizen® Program.
