Cared for by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart at a glance In a Nutshell In trust and simplicity we hear the word of God. If we think we know it all, the word passes over us and we don’t hear it. In the depths of our hearts, we are all equal. If we nestle in the heart of Jesus, we will come to know him and the Father too. Our souls will find refreshment and know the gentle- ness of the heart of God. Raise your voices Entrance antiphon: Within your temple, we ponder your loving kindness, O God. As your name, so also your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with justice. Response to the psalm: I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God. Gospel acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. Alleluia! We have perhaps all heard stories about people being down and out and then meeting Jesus in the midst of their desperation. We do not have to look for such witnesses. There are many accounts of people who have encountered the tender mercy and kind compassion of God. It is one thing to talk about how Jesus has been so generous with us, offering us shelter in the midst of our crises. It is another thing to become that which we have received. Are we prepared to become like Christ by seeking to be a safe haven ourselves? In our baptism we are called to be Christ-like. So being people can embrace and hold safe those who are struggling will hopefully be high on our list of priorities. This may appear difficult, even dangerous, but being a place of refuge for those who need comfort need not be as risky as it sounds. It does not necessarily call for us to open our homes—though some may be called to do that. But it asks us to open our hearts. Even though our hearts may feel inadequate and conflicted, we can trust that Christ, dwelling deep within, can communicate his tenderness through us. All we have to do is to trust him and allow some of our natural gifts of hospitality to be built upon by grace. For many of us who live busy lives, we meet people every day who need a listening ear, or a shoulder to cry on, or some gentle encouragement. Let us not be afraid to reflect the love of the Father by reaching out to the them. The Holy Spirit will guide us and Jesus will touch their hearts. Then we will show we are truly his disciples as we embrace others in the way that he did. The Living Word , 2017 Zechariah 9:9-10 See how humbly your king comes to you! C oming to Christ and knowing his loving care is an amazing experience. We have perhaps all heard

stories about people being down and out and then meeting Jesus in the midst of their desperation. We do

not have to look for such witnesses. There are many accounts of people who have encountered the tender

mercy and kind compassion of God.

It is one thing to talk about how Jesus has been so generous with us, offering us shelter in the midst of our

crises. It is another thing to become that which we have received. Are we prepared to become like Christ

by seeking to be a safe haven ourselves? In our baptism we are called to be Christ-like. So being people can

embrace and hold safe those who are struggling will hopefully be high on our list of priorities. This may

appear difficult, even dangerous, but being a place of refuge for those who need comfort need not be as

risky as it sounds. It does not necessarily call for us to open our homes—though some may be called to do

that. But it asks us to open our hearts. Even though our hearts may feel inadequate and conflicted, we can

trust that Christ, dwelling deep within, can communicate his tenderness through us. All we have to do is

to trust him and allow some of our natural gifts of hospitality to be built upon by grace.

For many of us who live busy lives, we meet people every day who need a listening ear, or a shoulder to

cry on, or some gentle encouragement. Let us not be afraid to reflect the love of the Father by reaching

out to the them. The Holy Spirit will guide us and Jesus will touch their hearts. Then we will show we are

truly his disciples as we embrace others in the way that he did. The Living Word , 2017

Apostleship of the Sea Appeal this Sunday Did You Know: About 90% of Australia’s trade relies on shipping this in turn is reliant on Seafares Over 1,500,000 Australians holiday on cruise liners per year, supported by large seafaring

crews separated from family There are about 1,000,000 seafarers on the world’s oceans, at any one time While life at sea can be exciting, seafarers can encounter:

Piracy— with crews and ships being held hostage Family isolation—with crews at sea for long periods Poor and dangerous working conditions Mental health issues due to loneliness, trauma, family separation

A work of the Catholic Church, the Apostleship of the Sea provides spiritual, social and material welfare for seafarers regardless of colour, race or creed, offering hospitality and pastoral care. This Apostleship relies heavily on generous volunteers who live out their faith by welcoming the stranger.

*This week’s first collection will be donated to this Appeal.

Sydney Alliance Housing Crisis On 12 July, we are inviting all parishioners to join us and Archbishop Anthony Fisher at St Mary’s Cathedral School Auditorium from 6 to 8pm. The meeting is to encourage the State Government to place a requirement on all new multi-storey developments for 15% of floor space to be allocated to low rental/affordable housing for those on low to moderate incomes. This is a practical solution to our housing crisis. It’s only by having representatives from many churches, unions and community groups that we can persuade the Housing Minister and mem-bers of the Sydney Development Corporation to listen to Sydney residents rather than the big de-velopers. We vote. To register, please email - [email protected]
