S H R I N E Y A C H T S M A N Volume 22, Issue 1 August 2006 Wow, the Tampa Imperial Session has come and gone so quickly. It seems like only a few months ago we were making plans to attend, yet it has been four years since I was elected into Office at Minneapolis, MN. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of the I.A.S.Y.C. for electing me as your new Commodore and congratulate the newly installed “Bridge”. Our number one goal this year is to further promote membership into our great fraternity. As discussed in Tampa at our annual business meeting, we as members must all do our part to promote this association. As your Commodore, I will be looking into new ideas to help further promote membership. Please inform me of any new ideas that you may want to share regarding membership, activities or involvement. Those of you with internet access be sure and check out www.shrinesavers.com ; this new tool offered by our Imperial Headquarters can only be a plus for our membership. A tip of the Fez to all of the members that helped to make Tampa and the Change of Watch Luncheon so enjoyable. We had 51 present for the luncheon, where Hadi Potentate Steve Harris performed the Installation of Officers and PIC Tom Magnuson performed the Official Proclamation. A special thanks to my Lady Bonnie and all of her helpers for all of the beautiful decorations. It’s great that most all of the I.A.S.Y.C. appointments agreed to stay onboard for another year and maintain their respective offices. Plans are now in place for the Midwinter meeting, which will be held downtown Las Vegas at the Plaza Hotel and Casino February 07 – 11, 2007. Please check the center section of this issue for more details. Las Vegas is a wonderful city to visit with so much to see and do, that we left one day as an open agenda for your very own site seeing adventures. This event and these hotel rates will be available to all members and guests of I.A.S.Y.C. members. Make sure to invite your best traveling friends for this event. By the way check out “Vegas Tips” by Vice Commodore Richo Markson. Until February, keep your powder dry and we will see you in Las Vegas. The Holiday Season will soon be with us, on behalf of Bonnie and I we wish Happy Holidays to all. Yachtsman's Toast

There are good ships,

And there are wood ships,The ships that sail the sea.

But the best ships,Are friendships,

And may they always be.

May misfortune follow you the rest of your life,

but never catch up.

Take me fishing and show me worms aren"t that icky.

Take me fishing; You can think about work later.

Take me fishing; Because I get the giggles when the boat bounces.

Take me fishing; Because my wedding is closer than you think.

" " " E:[email protected] O.K., so here's how it works. You put a coin (or better yet a dollar bill) into this well lighted machine, press a button that says "SPIN REELS", and you get more coins (or dollars) back than you first put in. That's all you need to know. You could recoup your expenses for Las Vegas in 2007 so easily. And, expenses can be low. In February, our Commodore is planning an outstanding FUN convention in glorious Las Vegas. The Hotel, food, and (most) of the entertainment is very reasonably priced, in this, the Entertainment Capital of the World. The best fun is meeting everyone, so much comraderie we share, and associations that we build, last a lifetime. Judie and I have made life-long friends from Tampa and past Conventions. How about you I.A.S.Y.C. Members who pay your dues, taking advantage of the festive occasions and planning NOW to be with us in Las Vegas. The months fly by, let's get together in February.

RICHO’s TIPSHi Big Spender!Rent a LIMO: Bell Trans (702) 739-7990 will furnish a "stretch" limo for one hour at $43/hr plus driver gratuity. Six can enjoy riding up and down the "Strip" while waving at the less fortunate through the moon roof. Bring your own champagne.

#

Take a romantic gondola ride at the Venetian

#

$$$$ Dining: Picasso at the Bellagio 6-9:30 p.m.

#

DO NOT MISS the ever changing floral display in the main hall at the Bellagio. After being the "Big Spender" this display is FREE.

#

The volcano eruption at the Mirage. (After you have seen one volcano erupt, you've seen them all.)

#

Too much to handle in four days . . . try the Hospitality Room at the Plaza. BEST DEAL IN LAS VEGAS.

Transportation in Las Vegas: No car? No problem. Monorail between Sahara and MGM Grand Hotels. Five in-between stops. (Expensive at $5 per person, one way) . . . discounts for multi-ride or all-day pass, but at $20 per couple round-trip you could hire a cab. Best deal is Public Bus"The Deuce" from Downtown Transportation Center every 6 to 15 minutes running up and down "the Strip", 24 hrs a day, at $5 for 24 hr pass. Double decker buses, reduced rates for Seniors (too bad we don't qualify). Free trams: A. Excalibur-Luxor-Mandalay Bay B. Treasure Island-The Mirage

#

Wedding Chapels: See next Yachtsman

#

Glitzy display: Liberace Museum 1775 E. Tropicana Ave. (702) 798-5595 Tribute shows at 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Saturdays. (Shame I can't make it).

#

Next trip w/Grandkids: Adventuredome Theme Park at Circus Circus (air conditioned) where adults, not going on rides, are free, and kids buy wristband for about $20, but $4 discount in most magazines including the Evansville, Indiana Gazette. Good way to keep the little ----------entertained ALL DAY LONG!

#

Contest: Who can find the best deal on a hotdog or shrimp cocktail? Submit answer to Richo and winner gets a bottle of "my favorite wine".

If renting a car at the airport, check Advantage Rent-A-Car. They just opened the Las Vegas facility and seem to have lower rates than the more advertised companies.

#

If gambling, of any sort, is your thing, as soon as possible after arriving at the Plaza Hotel, stop by the Plaza "Play Club" and get your "Play Club Card" which gives you points toward prizes or comp meals. You immediately will receive a gift T-shirt or some such "stuff".

#

Shopping: There is an outlet mall five minute drive from the Hotel called Las Vegas Premium Outlets at 875 S. Grand Central Parkway (Coach, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger Company Store etc). This is not to be confused with the giant Las Vegas Outlet Center 7400 Las Vegas Blvd (near the airport). You can also find your shopping frenzy at "Fashion Show" (Bloomingdales, Nordstroms, Macy's etc) located across from Wynn Hotel & Casino.

#

Reasonable meals: Italian (Maggiano's, also across from Wynn Casino), Chinese (Chang's In Bally's Hotel, moderate pricing, but good food), steak (skip Ruth's Chris, and try Bally's Steak House. Order the big porterhouse and one large salad. This will feed two.)

#

Best buffet deal: Luxor if you arrive between 3:30 and 4:00 for the lunch price, $13.99. At 4 p.m. sharp, the dinner starts, and price is $19.99 For the BIGGEST buffet, the Rio Carnival World Buffet (lunch $15.99 and dinner $23.99, but most Vegas magazines have $5.00 per person discount coupons).

#

Free shows: The Rio "Masquerade Show in the Sky (in the Hotel, 7 shows daily, 3 p.m., 4, 5, 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30. Catch some beads. Also, the moving, talking fountains in Caesar's Palace. Also the outside show with pirate ships and fireworks, evening at Treasure Island. CROWDED but see it once, and you don't have to return. The fountains in front of the Bellagio.OF COURSE, Fremont Street Experience, right in front of our Hotel.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SHRINE YACHT CLUBSAUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT

July 5, 2006

COMMITTEE MEMBERS;Richard B. McCord, PC, MAASYCLouis A. Metz, III, PIC, IASYC

At the request of International Commodore, your Committee reviewed the record and accounts of the Secretary/Treasurer and found them to be adequate and complete. Your Committee did, however, make the following suggestions in order to ease the Secretary/Treasurer’s records keeping requirements:

1) Transfer the Life Savings Account to the Investment Account and then cancel the Life Savings Account.2) Deposit interest from the Investment Account into the Checking Account.3) The terminology used to report the Checking Account balance, especially for activities such as South

Padre Island, should include the term “not checking” since this account is unusually large due to paid reservations and unpaid bills for the activity. The “net checking” figure must therefore deduct and estimate of the expenses to be incurred for the activity so as not to mislead the membership into thinking the checking account has an unusually high balance.

As an additional item, we determined that the cost per page to produce and distribute the Shrine Yachtsman is $150 and for the Dingy it is the same. The annual savings, therefore, by going from four to two editions of the Yachtsman and adding two editions of the Dingy is directly related to the number of pages.

Respectfully and fraternally submitted,

Richard B. Mccord, PC MAASYC

The Historians Corner

I am glad this is not a monthly publication; it seems that I just did one of these articles. Time flies when you are having fun.I recall in my Commodore’s Message at my Commodore’s Ball in 1972 saying that I could not think of three things in life that is greater than belonging to a Shrine Yacht Club. First, we are a member of the Masonic organization that teaches Friendship, Morality and Brotherly Love. It is those Moral and Social Virtues that bond us together.Second, we are members of the Shrine, the greatest philanthropy on earth. The work we do with the children in our Hospitals is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Our patriotic participation in parades and promotion of the Circuses and other entertainment for the children all show our concern for our fellow man. This is accomplished while at the same time we are having fun and fellowship with our BrothersThird, we are Yachtsmen, Mariners, Boaters, it all adds up to the same thing. There is no greater peace than to row out to your favorite fishing hole and sit there and enjoy the tranquility and beauty around you. Then the darn fish start bighting and it is back to work pulling them in.

I grew up in a Masonic family and when I went to work the men I worked with that I had most respect for were mostly Masons so it was natural that I wanted to be a Mason. While I was in high school, I dated a girl whose father was a Shriner. We were invited to go with her parents to dinner dances. Potentates Balls and other affairs. Again, this cultivated an interest in that organization. When I joined the Shrine a friend who was Commodore of the Shrine Yacht Club at that time invited Lorraine and me on one of their cruises. We boated with them for a period of time until we bought or own boat.

When you look around today you see very few children or grand children at the Shrine affairs. The excuses you hear are that they are too busy with their children or both parents are working. So what is new, we went through the same times. Maybe we are too boring and should liven up our activities.

One of the best days of the year is when our Yacht Club gets together kids from the hospital program and underprivileged children and take them out for a day of sailing or fishing. Hopefully one day those kids will be Shriners. This is what it is all about,Don’t forget, check your life jackets
