Carton Council of North America Releases New Report The Carton Council of North America is a group of collaborative carton manufacturerscommitted to delivering a long-term solution to divert valuable cartons from landfills. TheCarton Council recently released a new report assessing various policies designed to drive recycling of post-consumerpackaging and printed paper. Umicore Announces Acquistion of CP Chemicals

Umicore, a global material technology group, acquired CP Chemicals on August 25, 2014. CPChemicals is a refinery and recycler of cobalt and nickel containing secondary materials. Theacquisition of CP Chemicals will strengthen Umicore's position in the cobalt, nickel, and specialtymaterial market, from recycling to transformation and distribution. This will allow for ideal growthand expansion in Umicore's recycling and refining capabilities in the North American market. Full Press Release

Recycling Business Connections All North and South Carolina recycling business owners and operators are invited toattend the inaugural Recycling Business Connections event to be held on October 15,2014 in Charlotte. The event will provide a unique networking opportunity to forge newpartnerships and grow recycling businesses in the Carolinas. The Carolina RecyclingAssociation, N.C. Sonoco to Acquire Weidenhammer Packaging Group

On August 25, Sonoco announced the acquisition of Weidenhammer Packaging Group ofHockenheim, Germany. Weidenhammer Packaging Group is Europe's leading provider ofcomposite cans, drums, luxury tubes, and unique rigid containers with in-mold labeling.Sonoco's president and chief executive officer, M. Jack Sanders, shares his enthusiasmabout the acquisition: "Combining Weidenhammer's state-of-the-art production and technological capability places Sonoco in a leading position to provide its global consumer product customers with unparalleledpackaging expertise . . ."Full Press Release

North Carolina Aims to Improve Quality of Materials to MRFs The N.C. Department of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service published anew fact sheet entitled "Improving Material Quality in Local Recycling Programs". NorthCarolina's recycling programs are dependent on the quality of the materials received atlocal Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs). The NC DEACS encourages communicating with local MRFs about thefacility's process and collectors in order to better educate citizens and ultimately create more marketable materialsgoing to recycling manufacturers in the Southeast. Finalists Announced for 2014 Innovators Forum

The second annual Recycling Innovators Forum received more than 60 proposals and has announced the eight finalistsfor this year's competition. The finalists have been divided into two categories: Enterprise / Institution Finalist andGarage Innovator Finalists. The final competition will take place at 1pm today at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans.



Each finalist will present their concept to a panel of renowned judges for a chance to wina combined $40,000 to take their idea to the next level. Congratulations to the eightfinalists!Finalist Information

Novelis Invests In Capacity Novelis continues to dominate as the world's leading aluminum rolling and recyclingcompany. On August 14, Novelis announced the commissioning of a new coating linefor cans and the expansion of the recycling center in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil. Withother recent expansions in Oswego, New York; Changzhou, China; and Nachterstedt, Germany; Novelis has madesignificant progress towards reaching their ambitious goal of increasing their recycled aluminum rate to 80 percent by2020. From 2011 to 2014, the company increased their recycling aluminum rate from 33 to 46 percent.Novelis News
