Dear Parents,

We had a great turnout for our Open House and PTO Family Mass this past weekend. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to help us kick off National Catholic Schools Week and help get the word out to others about all that we have to offer. Along with other Catholic schools across the nation this week, we celebrate what sets us apart and why we feel so strongly about our mission to educate young people in body, mind and spirit.

I am often asked by current and prospective parents about our academics, teachers, extracurricular opportunities, etc. and how we compare with public or private schools in our area. Every year, we share our IOWA scores with you, which puts our students in the top quarter of the nation. We talk about where our students go to high school and beyond and share the prestigious awards and recognition they have received. As an educator, I love to talk about the instruction we provide and share score comparisons, but the biggest difference is in the long term benefits of knowing right from wrong and the ability to have discussions about how a moral decision affects, not only yourself, but those around you. Being able to examine a science or history lesson from a Christian perspective or to examine your conscience before making a decision when “everyone else is doing it” is really the reason you send your child to a Catholic school.

Our families have made a commitment and many of them sacrifice to do so; therefore, they are very involved in their child’s education. They want their child to be service oriented and to make a difference in the world. We have reached out to our former families and alumni to find out how their time at St. Laurence benefitted them later and I wish I could share all their stories about how we taught them responsibility and to use their faith to guide them when their parents couldn’t be there. We have such a short time to make a true impression on them before they are truly on their own. You are making a long term investment by choosing a Catholic education and we are honored to share in this journey with you. Happy Catholic Schools Week and thank you for being a part of our mission!

Mrs. Barto

Reminder. . . Current families must complete reenrollment by Friday, February 2nd! Parishioners may apply beginning Monday.

2018-2019 SCHOOL CALENDAR

HERE is our one-page calendar for next year to help you start planning!!  GERMS, GERMS, GERMS

Parents, in an effort to try and stop the spread of germs during this major flu season, we are temporarily asking students not to shake or hold hands when praying the Our Father or entering Mass. We would also like to remind everyone that a fever is considered 100.0 degrees according to our Handbook, and students must be fever free for 24 hours before they can return to school. That means, if they are sent home with a fever they cannot return the next day. We require a doctor’s note for any communicable illnesses. This allows us to communicate with other families and stop the spread of illness throughout our school.

RENWEB TIPS AND HELP

Ongoing RenWeb tips and help can be found on the school’s website under the RenWeb menu. Please continue to check this page for more help tips and updates HERE!

CAREER DAY On Thursday, Feb. 1st, SLCS will be hosting our 2nd Annual Career Day for grades 3 - 8. Career Day is an opportunity for students to listen to parents and community members explain their jobs, why they chose their career, what skills they use in their position, and how their faith has impacted them in their journey. Third and fourth grade students will rotate amongst four designated speakers. Middle school students will visit speakers based on their interests and availability of the speakers. Please remind your child to approach the day with an open mind and remember that there is a world of opportunities ahead of them. This is a time for exploring careers that they may not currently know about. This is also a wonderful time to share with your child why you chose the path you did and ask them what careers they might be interested in right now. Your conversation with your child could lead into a great opportunity to begin thinking about summer camps and programs that might compliment his or her interests. Mrs. Schurman and Mrs. Markum have also been visiting with the different grade levels to discuss how school skills translate into work skills, as well as other career exploration activities.
