ChinaForover10years,GlobalMinistrieshasbeenrespondingtotheneedsofpeopleinruralareasofHenanProvince,China.HenanProvincewastragicallyaffectedbyHIV/AIDSwhenapharmaceuticalfirmcollectedbloodfromtheimpoverishedlocals.However,thosecollectingbloodkepttheircostslowbyreusingneedles,therebyinfectinganentireregionofpeople.Theinfrastructure,includingeducation,hassufferedasthemiddlegenerationcontinuestodiefromHIV/AIDS.InHenanProvince,theYaoMuslimVillageElementarySchoolhasbeenindisrepairforyears.Together,theZhoukouChristianChurch,theAmityFoundation,thelocalMuslimcommunity,andGlobalMinistriesworkedtorebuildtheschool,whichopenedlastyear.GlobalMinistriesdonorsplayedanimportantroleinsupportingthebuildingproject.Nowchildrenhavetheopportunitytolearnandgrowinasaferenvironment.

Lebanon Whilemostofusimaginerefugeecampsastentcities,theShatilarefugeecampinBeirut,Lebanonismadeupofconcretebuildings,streets,andalleysandispackedwithpeople.ThecampwasoriginallysetupforPalestinianrefugeesin1949,butwiththerecentSyrianCivilWar,thecamphasswollenwithrefugeesfromSyria.TheDepartmentofServiceforPalestinianRefugees(DSPR)inLebanon,whichispartofGlobalMinistriespartnertheMiddleEastCouncilofChurches,iscommittedtoservingtheserefugees,manyofwhomwerefirstdisplacedover65yearsago.DSPR’sworkovertheyearshasmovedfromreliefworktovocationaltrainingandeducation.DSPRmaintainsafirmcommitmenttotherecognitionofrightsforPalestiniansintheMiddleEast.BringingthesituationofPalestinianrefugeesintotheconsciousnessofpeoplearoundtheworldisamajoraspectoftheiradvocacy.Aboy’st-shirtremindsusthatinthemidstofdifficultcircumstancesandtragedy,wemustnevergiveup.

CommunityDemocratic Republic of the Congo TheCommunityofDisciplesofChristinCongo(CDCC)wasfoundedover100yearsagoinwhattodayistheDemocraticRepublicoftheCongo(DRC).ThechurchhasbeenaffiliatedwiththeChristianChurch(DisciplesofChrist)since1899andnowrelatescloselytoGlobalMinistries.Inadditiontocongregations,theCDCCoperateshospitals,healthclinics,maternitycenters,schools,socialcentersforwomen,agricultureprojects,andaprintinghouse.ThepeopleoftheCongocontinuetostrugglewiththeeffectsofcivilwarandongoingconflictovermineralresources.Theseconflictshaveresultedin6milliondeathsandcountlessvictimsofwarcrimes,yetthetragediesarerarelyheardinthemedia.GlobalMinistriesworkedtoraiseawarenessandexpressoursolidaritywiththepeopleoftheCongothroughtherecentCongoInitiative.Despitedifficultcircumstances,thepeopleoftheCongoremainfulloffaith,joy,andhope.Withacommunalprayerforpeaceinourhearts,wecontinuetowalkwiththepeopleoftheCongo.

Japan Japancontinuestorebuildandrecoverfromtheearthquake,tsunamiandnuclearreactorexplosionsthatstruckthecountryin2011.Fearanduncertaintycontinueoverthedangersofradiation,thesafetyoffoodproducts,andthehealthofthoselivinginFukushimaandthesurroundingareas.Youngmothersfearforthehealthoftheirchildren.Familiesfeelisolated.Farmersandfishermenareconcernedaboutproducingfoodthatissafeforconsumers.GlobalMinistriesandtheUnitedChurchofChristinJapanhaveinitiatedtheAizuRadiationInformationCenter,whichprovideseducation,radiationtesting,traumasupport,andotheractivitiestocommunitymemberswhocontinuetosufferfromtheFukushimadisaster.Radiationlevelsintheair,soil,andwateraremonitored,especiallywherechildrenattendschoolorplay.FreshAirCamps–shortretreatstoareasnotaffectedbyradiation–havebeenheldforbothchildrenandadults.Astheeffectsofthenucleardisastercontinuetobeseen,fearremains.Outofthatfear,hopeshinesthroughthatthefuturewillbesaferforallwhenweworktogether.

East Timor WhilethepopulationofneighboringIndonesiaisoverwhelminglyMuslim,EastTimorispredominatelyChristian.EastTimorgainedindependencefromIndonesiain2002andcurrenteconomicdisparitiesamongthepopulationmakenationbuildingachallenge.Inaddition,EastTimorisvulnerabletothealternatingdisastersofmonsoonsanddroughts.IlliteracyratesarehighinEastTimor.Fewschoolsexistandthosethatdochargetuition.GlobalMinistriespartnertheEastTimorEducationFoundationseekstomakeadifferencebybuildingandequippingfreeschools,opentoallchildrenregardlessoftheirreligiousorethnicbackground.Thisfoundationprovidestheyoungpeopleofoneofthemosteconomicallypoornationsonearthwiththeopportunityforabetterfuture.TheFoundationisnon-denominationalandworksincooperationwithGlobalMinistriesandpartnerchurchtheProtestantChurchofEastTimorinordertoprovidesupportforschools.BuildingopportunitiesforeducationcreateshopeforthefutureofEastTimor.
