INTERNET Largest programming contest (educational institutes) Tata Consultancy Services organised season IV of its flagship coding competition, CodeVita 2015, open to students across the country and 45,861 teams from various colleges participated in the first round of the online challenge which was conducted from August 7-8, 2015. Over 2 lakh submissions were received from the students in the 24-hr time challenge. Around 2,500 teams were shortlisted for Round 2. The finale was an offline event, in which 15 teams met at TCS Hyderabad Campus on March 1, 2016. The programmers worked on Java, C, C++, C#, Python, PHP, Ruby, Julia and Perl languages for the first round of the event. Around 978 participants were shortlisted for the second round of the online contest and 133 participants met for the on ground finale at the Radisson Blu hotel, Noida on May 27, 2016. Longest-running online column on taxation Vijay K Kumar, Editor-in-Chief of taxindiaonline.com has been publishing a column ‘Daily Dose of Taxation with Vijay Kumar’ on his website, except on weekends, without a break since Dec 1, 2004. He had completed 2,879 such columns by June 30, 2016. Low cost satellite spectrum monitoring systemISMES Jalna, has developed a very low cost satellite spectrum monitoring and e-system under the project Orbit Spectrum to monitor spectrum usage by variousservice providers, both private and public, providing satellite-based services. Toensure that optimum work was achieved in limited funds, a low cost satellite dishantenna, which is manually controlled was created in-house and named ‘SmallWonder’ because it is only 2.4 m in size. It officially became functional on April19, 2013. It is capable of monitoring 10 different types of satellite servicesoperating in C and Ku bands. A database called Sajag was launched on June 27,2014 which preserves all monitoring data and details of the spectrum assigned tovarious players. This system has made it easy for officials to make note of anyviolations. The entire project costs only Rs 2.59 lakh with Rs 20,000 spent onthe dish Small Wonder and Rs 15,000 on the database Sajag. The project wasdeveloped under the leadership of Ajay Singhal and Onkarnath of the IndianRadio Regulatory Services (IRRS).

The International Satellite Monitoring Earth Station was set up in 1992-93 inJalna, Maharashtra under the Ministry of Communication to ensure that Indiansatellites face no interference from foreign satellites and is currently headed byAjay Singhal of the IRRS.

First hot air balloon-carried postA special postal cover was carried in a hot air balloon carrier of India Post from Sakthi Mills Ground,Pollachi, Tamil Nadu and delivered to the Postmaster of Kovipalayam, Pollachi on Jan 3, 2016. First wheelchair delivered postAshwin Ramesh (b April 21, 1992) of Institute ofPalliative Medicine in support of the Institute andIndia Post organised a wheelchair rally,Wheelathon 2015 during which 500 specialcovers placed in a bag were transported onwheelchair from Calicut Head Post office toPuthiyara Post Office in Kozhikode, Kerala on Jan8, 2015. Three spinal cord injury patients, around120 students of the Institute and few postal staffswere also part of this rally. Cancellation of mail in spaceLakshman Prasad of Aligarh, UP invented a special equipmentwith rotary wheels for cancellation of mail in space in 1983. Aspecial ink was also manufactured for the operation of theequipment. The cancellation equipment was successfully usedby Sqn Ldr Rakesh Sharma on space craft Salyut-7 on hishistoric flight.
