to fund it. A contract has been signed withZagrodnik + Thomas to plan and oversee the project. We hope to see work on the buildings begin inthe fall. In the meantime you may see some workon the pergola, as we seek to strengthen it and preserve the wisteria.

Board members Melesse Traylor and AnnZahner are working with consultant SharonBallidis and many of you during this “quiet phase”of the capital campaign. Thank you so much foryour commitment and support.

You will see from other articles in this newsletterthat we are working to expand our programs, particularly the oral history project, walking toursand our volunteer program. You have probablynoticed Carol Olten’s monthly column on LaJolla’s history in the La Jolla Village News.

My thanks to the Directors and the staff fortheir support and hard work as we plan for thefuture of your society.

President’s Message

n January, theDirectors met for anextended meeting to

review our mission andplan for the future. Webegan by noting theaccomplishments of theSociety over the past fewyears, including signing alease for the use of Wisteria Cottage; hiring a full-time executive director, full-time office managerand part-time archivist; hosting an evermore successful Secret Garden Tour; initiating a successfulgolf tournament; and expanding our links to thecommunity and our membership. We have rewordedour Mission Statement to better convey the society’s priorities and we are planning to revisethe by-laws as we reorganize the structure of the Board.

We acknowledged and identified the challengesfacing us, the most daunting of which are completing the renovation and raising the money

I

s I mark the firstsix months of mytenure as executive

director, I continue to beguided by a simple princi-ple: listen. Before takingthe Society into a radicalnew direction, it has beenimportant to me to listento those who have made this organization what it is.I continue to benefit from the valued input of Boardmembers, volunteers, staff, local business owners, fellow La Jolla cultural institutions, and – especially– you, the members of the La Jolla Historical Society.I hope you are seeing that your input and investmentin the Society is making a difference.

We are excited to introduce our first new logo inyears! We hope you’ll agree it captures La Jolla’s distinctive architectural character and seaside qualities. In addition, we are pleased to unveil a great newmembership structure (page 7). This upgradedmenu of benefits will give supporters a wider varietyof ways to support the Society. Look for furtherenhancements to member benefits in the future.

Annual Appeal 2006 was a tremendous success! Todate, we have raised over $22,000 – far exceeding allprior records. Your generosity has made it possiblefor us to bring you this new look for your newsletterand helped launch exciting new initiatives, includ-

A ing a new walking tour of historic La Jolla (page 3).Congratulations… we did it together!

Our efforts at inviting greater communityinvolvement are paying dividends. We welcomeMeanley & Son Ace Hardware, Clay LeafBuilding Contractor Inc., IS Architecture, TheCopley Press, Chism Brothers Painting, SOSPrinting, Wells Fargo Bank and BANG! Creative,Inc., our newest partners. Their support is evidence ofthe philanthropic spirit that permeates the businesscommunity. See page 4 for the growing list of our valued corporate partners.

Anticipation continues to build as this year’sSecret Garden Tour approaches. The SGT Committee, led by chair Betty Vale, is an outstanding group ofdedicated people working hard to make this year’stour the finest yet. I’ve had the good fortune to seethe Committee in action and they are really puttingtheir heart into this event.

Finally, I want to recognize a special friend of theSociety, Lydia McNeil. After graciously volunteeringher time and talents on our newsletter over the pastfew years, Lydia recently stepped back to focus onother endeavors. n the move! That is simply the best way Ican describe our launch into the new year atthe Society. We are seeing a positive

response to the extended open hours we introducedlast year, both in researchers and in curious visitors. Both are great and we enjoy the opportunity toshare our collections with people, as well asanswer questions about the community’s historyand the Society itself.

With our location in the La Jolla cultural district, we often receive visitors stoppingby to ask about landmarks in the neighborhoodand, with so many historically interesting thingsto see around the village, why wouldn’t they? When volunteer Louis Vener offered to help usdevelop a walking tour, we decided the time wasright and we set to work.

We are very excited to announce that TheHistoric La Jolla Walking Tour is now available! The color guide book is 16 pages and focuses onfifteen historically significant stops within about atwenty-block route. Included is a route map andphotographs from the collection illustrating whatLa Jolla looked like during its early days as a dustybeach town. The tour itself should take about anhour and fifteen minutes to stroll at a comfortablepace. The first stop is our offices, which convenientlyis where the booklet can be purchased for $5(discount with membership).

We had a lot of fun developing this tour, andLa Jolla is such an interesting place that we arealready thinking of what the next walking tourfocus could be! In the meantime pick up yourown copy of the guidebook and enjoy this greattour today!

DID YOU KNOW?

The first silent movies in La Jolla were shown in1912 in a room at the Bath House at the Cove.

The showman used an Edison machine that did nothave a fire shutter and a piece of tin had to be usedto prevent the entire venue from going up insmoke. Within two months, however, the movieswere closed down because of the extreme fire hazard.

La Jolla Heritage

George Silvani is a volunteer in the Society Archives

From the Filesby George Silvani

nly twenty-six inches tall, this tiny bronze figure by sculptor James “Tank” Porter wasthe only free-standing monument in San Diego when dedicated on June 14, 1926, onthe Recreation Center lawn. The statuette depicted a child kneeling beside a small

pond, arms outstretched and hands cupped from which trickled a stream of water. It, alongwith a pond and a dedicatory marble bench, were gifts to Ellen Browning Scripps from theschool children of La Jolla who had made the contribution through their own donated pennies and nickels. The sculptured image attested to Mrs. Scripps’ love of children.

The statuette became the most cherished object in La Jollaand, for decades, children were photographed splashing in theshallow pool and putting their arms around “her” shoulders.Writers referred to the statuette variously as “the little boy,”“the little girl,” and occasionally as the “bronze child.” Ina San Diego City publication entitled Curatorial Examinationof Certain Works of San Diego City Art, a detailed technicaldescription of the little statuette referred to it as, “Her.”Both gender references may have been prompted by thefigure’s slim boyish body and a girl’s beautiful facial features. It is not known whom Tank Porter used asa model or what his intentions were – boy or girl – whenhe breathed life into the extraordinary piece of bronze.

Sadly, the statuette was found missing on themorning of June 28, 1995. The thieves werenever apprehended and, though the LaJolla Historical Society and theRecreation Center offered a $1,000reward for its return, the statuette wasnever recovered. Though heartbroken, the community acted to fill the void. Led by a few members of the Society, a committee ofLa Jollans was formed to raise funds to replace the statuette and restore the gap left by the theft.

A contract for a suitable replacement for the missing bronze child was awarded to localsculptress Mary Buckman for $8,600. The gender of the replacement statuette is not indoubt. Buckman caught the innocent beauty of a six-year-old girl to model for her figurethat now silently rests by the reflecting pool, dipping her hand in the water. Since its dedication on June 3, 1996, the new statuette has captured the love of La Jolla children andadults alike – worth many times more than the contract price.

poems and essays. He oftensat in a chair at the back ofWisteria Cottage overlook-ing the ocean, observingpelicans and other seabirds. What fascinated Burroughs most in this area, according tobiographers, were the trap-door spiders peculiar to the sandy soil ofthe Southwest and noted for the long silk-lined tunnels they created.Burroughs referred to his La Jolla experiences as “the most vivid andlasting of all my California impressions.” Although in his later life-time he sometimes escaped from harsh New York winters toPasadena, La Jolla topped his list. “An earthly paradise,” Burroughswrote, “all sun and sky and sea – flowers blooming and birds singing.”

An impressionable gentleman with a long white beard andhalo of white hair, Burroughs was in good health during his stayhere. He was photographed wearing a dark suit and English cap infront of the Wisteria cottage pergola. (The sign above the pergola in1920 read “Wistaria” in honor of the American anatomist CasparWistar for whom wisteria and wistaria – archaic – is named.) Thevery last photograph taken of Burroughs shows him in La Jollaobserving seals on the beach.

One can only surmise that Burroughs enjoyed staying in the housewhose rustic redwood board and batten interiors at the time were reminiscent of the homesteads he had created for himself in theCatskill Mountains of New York.

Burroughs wrote his last message to the world at WisteriaCottage: A birthday greeting to Every Child’s Audubon Societycalled “The Joy of Life,” dated Jan. 26, 1921. The message reads inpart: “As the time draws near for my 84th birthday, I look backdown the long road of the years and think what a good journey it hasbeen. All my life I have been trying to find out about this big globeof ours swimming through space and about its inhabitants, humanand otherwise.”

usinesses on Girard Avenue come andgo but there is only one Warwick’s.Family-owned and operated

since 1896, it is the oldest continuallyon-going business in La Jolla with aprominent profile – and the establishedhope of another hundred years tocome. Nancy Warwick, whose greatgrandfather W.T. Warwick originallybegan the store in Mankato, MN, hasbeen at the helm of the operation at7812 Girard Ave. for ten years, taking overfrom her father, Bob Warwick, who inheritedthe business in 1966.

“The interesting thing is that while familymembers always were involved in the business, we were never totally expected tomake it our profession,” says Nancy. “Myfather pursued a career as a teacher before hebecame involved. I have a Ph.D. in anthro-pology and always thought I’d be doing

something in that field.” Family ties and a firm foothold in La Jolla

history and tradition, however, havealways brought a Warwick back hometo carry on the business. Nancy is dedicated to the La Jolla community –its past and present. “La Jolla haschanged, but I think many changeshave been positive,” she says. Nancynotes that there are more youngfamilies here, sharing a common sense

of community. What’s the key to Warwick’s longstanding

viability? Building a trusting relationshipwith customers and carrying a wide range ofproduct are two factors Nancy cites. “We area bookstore, but also an office supply and giftshop,” she says. “Each department has a lifeof its own. While we do have bestsellers, youcan still come in and buy just a single pieceof green paper.”
