KAP CORNER As we round the corner and head into the home stretch of a new 4-H year, 4-Hers are reminded

that Citizenship and Leadership should be a consideration in your project activities. In fact for you older 4-H members this should be just as an important factor as your project learning activities. Leadership is usually more easily understood with leadership opportunities are more clearly identifiable and often more easily achieved. Citizenship on the other hand is somewhat more obscure and sometimes takes some cre-ative thinking and a little extra effort to identify and maybe even create. In the KAP both these aspects should be related to the particular KAP being completed. A question often asked is “what’s the differ-ence”?

Leadership is actively teaching another person or a group skills or information. It also includes organizing or coordinating an activity, event, or meeting; selecting and preparing materials, and selecting presenters. As a 4-Her gains experience, these leadership activities and sharing that experience and knowledge are expected to extend more and more to others outside the immediate family, to other 4-Hers and organizations.

Citizenship means helping out in your community and serving others without compensation. Citi-zenship may be undertaken alone, as a family or with your Club or group. What makes it somewhat con-fusing at times, is that Citizenship may also be leadership, IF you organized the activity and worked with the community contact to arrange the time, etc as well as participated.

Examples of citizenship include, but are not limited to:

1. Visiting nursing homes to entertain and/or to share your projects with the residents. 2. Caring for a neighbor’s livestock or garden during a vacation, holiday or illness. 3. Collecting, donating and/or sorting canned goods for a local food bank. 4. Cleaning a trail or roadway. 5. Donating materials, money or time to a soup kitchen, hospital, animal shelter, etc. 6. Working with people with disabilities. 7. Working as an assistant fair superintendent.

Horse Project Meeting—March 22nd

4-H Horse Project Leaders Ethan and Jerry Rice would like to invite all 4-H Project Members to attend the first horse project meeting of the year! Meet at the Saddle Club Arena at 2pm on Sunday, March 22nd!

Shooting Sports Update

For a county to offer the Shooting Sports project and its various shooting disciplines the Kansas State 4-H Department requires a county to have filled the Shooting Sports Project Coordinator position as well a an individual certified as the instructor for a particular discipline before it can be offered in that county. This certification process is critical to protect the individual project instructors as well as the local 4-H Extension program from a liability standpoint.

****This year we DO NOT have volunteers certified to instruct any of the shooting sports projects in any elements except for Western Heritage. Therefore, and until further notice, only the Shooting Sports– Western Heritage project is offered in Coffey County 4-H for the 2020 4-H year. ***

If you are interested in becoming certified as a county coordinator and/or shooting sports instructor, then please contact Darl Henson as soon as possible at 620-364-5313 or [email protected]. There is a training scheduled for late March.

Junior Sheep Producer Day—March 14th

Join us for Kansas Junior Sheep Producer Day on March 14, 2020. Presentations and demonstrations by a featured speaker, as well as K-State faculty will cover topics such as selection, facilities and gen-eral care, health & vaccinations, nutrition, and showmanship. This interactive workshop is designed for all ages and skill levels. All participants will receive a T-shirt and complimentary lunch. Participant with registrations received after February 21st are not guaranteed a T-shirt.

Poultry Pullorum Testing

Due to continuation of the nationwide shortage of the antigen needed to conduct pullorum-typhoid testing in poultry, the Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health is waiving cer-tain poultry testing requirements for 2020. As a result, Kansas poultry owners do not need to test their exhibition birds for the pullorum disease while the waiver is in effect.

Although we still consider pullorum-typhoid testing important in maintaining pullorum-clean poultry

within Kansas, pullorum disease is rare. Due to this low risk of spread of pullorum disease, and the

fact that the antigen for testing will not be available, KDA is waiving the requirement for pullorum-

typhoid testing until January 1, 2021.

KSU Animal Science Youth Leadership Academy

Kansas high school youth are invited to apply for participation in a dynamic program designed to educate youth about the livestock industry through an engaging summer experience hosted by K-State Animal Scienc-es and Industry. The goal of this academy will be to further develop young leaders within the livestock indus-try and prepare them for a successful future in this field.

The event held June 24-27, will focus on increasing knowledge of Kansas’ diverse livestock industry, as well as building participant’s leadership skills. Twenty high school students will be selected to participate based upon educational, community, and agricultural involvement, as reflected through an application pro-cess.

The academy will welcome students to the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry at K-State and pro-vide on-campus housing. Students will receive interactive leadership training at Weber Hall and tour K-State Animal Science Facilities. The second portion of the program will allow students the opportunity to tour businesses and organizations within Kansas’ livestock industry. Applications are due April 15th.

WALK KANSAS runs March 15 through May 9, 2020.

This healthy living challenge is provided by K-State Research & Extension each spring. Enlist some friends to complete your team of 4-6, or sign up as an individual and we will assign you to a team. This is a great opportunity for youth as well! Sports practice, recess, and steps on your activity track-ers all count toward Walk Kansas minutes and can help your team reach its goal! Each team will choose one of three challenges to complete during the program:

Challenge 1) Each person reaches the minimum goal for physical activity- 2.5 hours of moderate/vigorous activity per week. Collectively, the team would walk 435 miles- the distance to visit the 8 Wonders of Kansas.

Challenge 2) Take a cross country trip through Kansas! Each person logs 4 hours of activity per week, which would take the team 764 miles.

Challenge 3) Walk a wondering trail from Little Balkans to Nicodemus- 1200 miles—with each per-son logging 6 hours of moderate/vigorous activity per week.

Registration is open February 18- March 20 on walkkansasonline.org or in the Extension Office. Fee is $10/person for adults, SCHOOL AGED youth (18 and younger) can participate for FREE!, with the option to purchase apparel at an additional cost.
