Book, Music and Lyrics by: Story by: MEREDITH WILLSON MEREDITH WILLSON & FRANKLIN LACEY

Meredith Willson's THE MUSIC MAN is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, 545 Eighth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10018.

The University of Michigan forbids smoking in any part of the Power Center for the Performing Arts

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Hot dogs, apple pie, and Mom! What's more representative of American Musical

Comedy than Meredith Willson's "The Music Man"?

Those of us who were aware of Willson's importance as composer, arranger, and conductor during the heyday of radio-thirties, forties, and early fifties-knew he had a special feel for America's musical pulse.

A native Iowan, he was true to the spirit of middle-America in his conception of Marian (the prim librarian~ Harold (the flamboyant salesman), and the populace of River City.

Every town across the land had its high school (or even junior high) band, which was featured in Labor Day, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July parades-ill-fitting uniforms and all. Harold Hill knew how to appeal to the townspeople, sell his in-struments, and, in the meantime, win over the heart of Marian.

Likewise, in telling Harold's story, Meredith Willson wins ours.

    Enjoy!

    -John McCollum

DIRECTOR'S NOTE Although in recent years Broadway has been home to several British musicals, the musical comedy has always been considered

an American art form. THE MUSIC MAN, with its story and characters straight out of the heartland of the U.S.A. shortly after the turn of the century, could be considered the quintessential American musical. It even offers us an onstage 4th of July celebration and ice cream social-pure summertime Americana.

Most Americans have seen at least the movie version and probably also a community theatre or high school production of this much-loved musical which produced such favorites as "Till There Was You", "76 Trombones" and "Gary, lndiana':.......not to mention "Trouble':.......the ultimate in Yankee salesmanship (mixed with a dollop of evangelism-albeit not actually of a religious nature).

So what can we do to make our own production of this classic a little out of the ordinary? Surely not tamper with the songs or the characters or the interpretation of the script! Remember, this is a classic. The costumes from that era are so much fun and suit the show so well that they deserve to be approached as authentically as possible. That leaves us with the scenery. Every produc-tion of THE MUSIC MAN I've ever seen, performed in, or directed has used realistic sets. So Set Designer Gene Macario, Stage Manager Rick Ashcroft and I brainstormed to come up with some unusual ideas (a few of which we decided were too far out to go with). We hope that you enjoy our use of some rather atypical set pieces for our very typical American musical comedy.

The entire directing staff, crew and our 70+ member cast of community people with real grown-ups playing the grown-up characters and children playing the River City Kids (only a few of our teen dancers are over 20), all hope that our audiences enjoy the show as much as we enjoyed "putting it together-bit by bit".

A MESSAGE To THOSE WHO APPRECIATE SUPERIOR QUALITY

Let's be honest. Not all frankfurters are created equal. For that matter, neither are sandwich meats, bologna, or sausages. Some specialty meats are ... welL not very special at all.

But Koegel meats are different. You see, Koegel people take a lot of pride in

making smoked sausage, Viennas, ring bologna,-all their meats-according to the Koegel family tradi-tion. A tradition of quality.

For more than 75 years, Koegel's has used only the choicest cuts, the freshest ingredients, the tastiest spices, and the finest natural casings to create their wholesome meats.

That's why, when you bite into a famous

Koegel's Vienna, it sort of snaps. When you saute Koegel's savory Whole-E-Smokes, an ordinary breakfast almost siults. And when you stock Koegel's variety meats with your favorite fixings, you've got a sandwich that salisfies.

Now, if you haven't tasted Koegel's fine meats, we're not too surprised. Because, even though Koegel's is very popular in some parts of Michigan, this is the first time we've made our products available in supermarkets near you.

If you appreciate superior quality, look for us in your grocer's meat case. Once you've had your first taste of Koegel's, we're betting you11 never go back to ordinary meat again.

~ Meats made up to a quality, not down to a price.
