Bright Futures is the official newsletter of ProvidencePlace. We welcome your comments, suggestionsand ideas.

In February our Board approved our master plan, and the early implementation is beginning to takecenter stage. It is very exciting to be looking forwardto what Providence Place as an organization, andour campus as a location for expanded services, will look like in the years ahead.

It is clear and very gratifying the concept ofcollaboration that has led to so many of oursuccesses is taking hold and being embraced. Nolonger a foreign notion, collaboration rather thanrivalry has shown how together we can each

become much stronger organizationally and financially. Our master planexpands on this new concept of community as a place for people to live, work and flourish.

As we look to the future and prepare to raise the funds to implement ourvision, we are building on steady financial and collaborative progress overthe past 12 years. Yet at the same time, we are conscious not to becomecomplacent. We are always aware that unpredictability is a given andsomething we must manage to continue to thrive and increase the numberof people we can serve.

Being prepared at all times means just because you can't see shifting trendsthe dynamics won't change. They will. As a healthy organization, we mustbe alert and adaptable to handle any curve ball that comes our way.

With that in mind, this year we moved our strategic planning forward toinvolve our board and leadership team more closely in a two-day retreat. One of the opening exercises centered on an imaginary award to ProvidencePlace by TIME Magazine in 2025. With questions: Why were we beingrecognized? What did we need to do to get there? What changes wouldconfront us in the decade ahead?

From the brainstorming, ideas emerged that were exciting and imaginative. The top six strategies will be incorporated into our evolving strategic planand presented for board approval at the June meeting. I was overwhelmedby the genuine participation and enthusiasm between board members andour leadership team.

You have helped create this new model of community a place where peoplewho have lived on the fringes and felt excluded can live, work and flourish.I am honored and humbled to be leading the Providence Place communityand thank you from my heart for your generosity and participation.

3Providence Place | Summer 2014

2013: A Year of PositiveChange and MomentumLast year was truly a momentous year for ProvidencePlace: we adopted our new name, expanding ouropportunities to serve more people in new and differentways; we re-affirmed our focus on serving women, children and young adults with disabilities; we formallylaunched Ectropia and its vision of collaboration forcommunity betterment; we completed the renovationof the housing for our partner, Volunteers of AmericaTexas' (VOATX) LIGHT, almost doubling the capacity. We also began serious work on master planning forour campus.

Ectropia's meaning encompasses collaboration, creativity and community, a combination of the wordEctropy, denoting energy and order, and Utopia, aperfect community. A stepchild third program atProvidence Place for many years, Ectropia came intoits own in 2013 with its new name and emphasis onexpanded collaborations. Our annual goal in 2013was to serve 575 people and the actual number servedwas 595.

Both Action Adoption and CHI took off in newdirections and we had our largest graduating classever in 2013. Our master planning is underway, asis an ambitious fundraising plan to support it. Thedream for Providence Place of the future is thatresidents, partners, volunteers, Board and ProvidencePlace team contribute to re-shaping the campus as aplace where people live, work and flourish.

ittle did we know we'd be coming back home with a preciousdaughter," D'Anne Canaday said recently, describing how

she became a very happy mother during what she had seen as avery ordinary family vacation to San Antonio last October. Insteadit was a memorable milestone in their lives.

Several failed attempts of in vitro fertilization years earlier had ledJustin and D'Anne Canaday to an alternative they had not explored adoption in the hope that this would be the way to build theirfamily. They adopted their first son, River, from an agency in Dallassix years ago, but knew they had more love to share.

They heard about some close friends' experience with the ActionAdoption program at Providence Place, and quickly began theenrollment process. Then they put everything on hold when theyhad an unexpected phone call from their Dallas agency about ababy boy. Without question, the Canadays knew the little boywas meant for them, and welcomed little Colton into their family.

"Action Adoption was so supportive and understanding and weknew we would go back when we were ready for our third baby,"D'Anne said. "In early 2013, we started the process again."

In late August, Melissa Bueno, their Action Adoption counselor, called with news about a young woman who had given birth toa five-weeks premature baby girl.

"She told us this birth mother had not yet picked a family, so asexcited as we were at the thought of a baby girl, we knew sheprobably wouldn't pick us," D'Anne said. "We didn't want to getour hopes up."

Two weeks before their trip to San Antonio, Melissa told her shehad begun showing their family profile to other birth mothers, and D'Anne jokingly mentioned they'd be more than happy tomeet any birth mothers while they were in town. But just beforethey left, Melissa called to say that would not be happening.

"The reason was," Justin laughed, "that instead, we would bepicking up our baby girl before heading back home her birthmother had chosen a family and she chose us!"

D'Anne and Justin were stunned by the beauty of their daughter,Kinslye. She was just two months old and in the care of a lovingcradle-care family at that point. When they first held her, theyfelt she was meant to be theirs.

"We knew instantly, just like we did with both our boys, she wascreated just for us," they agreed. "It was one of the three best daysof our lives."

Now eight months old, Kinslye is healthy and full of life. Adoredby her two big brothers, she will never have a worry about anylack of protection or love.

"God is good," D'Anne said, "and our three beautiful childrenprove it!"

of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) social workersabout our work, and they began referring students to our program."

Enrollment has since skyrocketed with over 40 percent of CHIstudents on the Autism Spectrum and several international studentsand visually impaired students having gone through the program.

"We've really made huge strides with our internationalstudents from Jordan, Nepal and Congo," she noted."It's because in many countries, people withdisabilities are shunned and ostracized in society. As a result, they are not educated or cared for, so forthose international students who have gone throughthe program, it's often the first time they experiencebeing part of a family, of being loved. It's only thenthat they can begin to realize their ability to live anindependent life."

In addition to international students, Terri has discovered a highdemand for vocational rehabilitation services in the New Mexicoarea. After speaking with Terri and taking a campus tour a fewmonths ago, two students from the New Mexico School for theDeaf in Santa Fe are looking forward to joining CHI by the endof summer. She also attended the Consortia of Administrators forNative American Rehabilitation Conference in New Mexico inApril and began planting that seed, as she sees serving the NativeAmerican community in the future as a strong possibility. She alsosees possibly adapting the campus in order to serve certaindisabilities, such as the visually impaired, and she makes sureeveryone she speaks with knows Providence Place's reputation forflexibility in serving new communities.

"Our mission is to provide God's children with a family, a faithand a future not just some of them but all of them, and I willcontinue my contribution to our mission by always being willingto consider new approaches and trying to bring in as many peopleas I can to a place they really can call home."

Bringing over 100 potential students to the Providence Placecampus for tours annually, CHI Admissions Director Terri Gutierrezhas her hands full. Yet she's always ready to push the envelopeand pursue her outreach around the country to new and differentgroups. In her eight years at Providence Place, she has created amelting pot of students on campus.

"There were only 20 students in the program whenI started and it was really struggling," she saidrecently. "Today there are more than 45 studentsand our numbers are growing."

Students now come from so many different placesand backgrounds that it's exciting for other studentsand the Providence Place team alike.

In 1974, when Providence Place first started the CHIprogram, deaf and hard-of-hearing students werethe majority on campus. But over time, enrollmentstarted plummeting and it became clear the campus needed totake a different direction.

With a BS in Deaf Education, an MSW with an administrativeemphasis and a Graduate Certificate in Women and PublicPolicy, Terri is acutely familiar with the field and has workedwith people with disabilities for the last 25 years as a teacher, social worker and as an administrator in Texas, Utah, NewMexico, New York and Pennsylvania. Credentials aside, whatmakes her so invaluable is her passion and genuine care for theCHI program. The result is she's not afraid to test innovativeand game-changing strategies.

"We are very fortunate to have someone of Terri's caliber atProvidence Place," said Jennifer Sample, President and CEO."Her commitment and energy level are second to none."

"I knew I had to increase enrollment so I dived into a lot ofunexplored territory, reaching out to students on the AutismSpectrum, as well as international and visually impaired studentsat the conferences and fairs we attend around the country," Terrisaid. "We also began a significant effort to educate the Department

Late last year, managers at Providence Place quietly began sharing with their teamsthree new additions to the Providence Place list of core values developed by theleadership team. The existing core values had initially been developed early in CEOJennifer Sample's tenure.

"The new values aren't exactly new," explained Jennifer. "We have been embodyingthem for a long time and decided it was time to formalize them as an integral partof our culture." She noted that a strong sense of performance management and ofinnovation and collaboration very much reflected Providence Place. She also stressedthe importance of "taking care of ourselves," and focusing on physical and mentalwell-being, as well as spiritual well-being.

The leadership team collaboratively developed the explanatory wording for thethree values, Innovation and Collaboration, Performance Management, and Healthand Wellness. They are now laid out in a small, foldout document on mission, vision and core values that everyone on campus has.

Judith Bell, Chief Operating Officer, who took the lead on the implementation, said,"It was important to put into words what is held very deeply here. These values definewho we are individually and collectively." She also guided last year's rollout of Impact3,the campus-wide health and wellness program emphasizing body, mind and spirit, which includes activities such as the Walking Challenge, which built camaraderie andfriendly competition, as well as a monthly health-oriented speaker series.
