Yukichi Fukuzawa, a self-made entrepreneur opened a school of Dutch studies for scholarship with an international perspective in Edo-period Tokyo (1858) to foster individuals with the ability to take responsibility for their own learning by thinking for themselves and remaining unswayed by the changes of the era. This was the starting point of Keio University.
A place of learning which blossomed on the ideals of self-respect and independence of mind and then turned its gaze to the world beyond
「 独 立 自 尊 」
Fukuzawa, whose keen sense of the necessity to modernize Japan’s education system was inspired by his travels in Europe and the United States, pioneered the establishment of an educational environment founded on a spirit of practical science which he christened jitsugaku. In this way, Keio University became the epoch-making institution which lit the way forward for Japan some 160 years ago, proposing perspectives which encouraged the “scientific thinking” that would become foundational to the modern global society.
The wellspring of jitsugaku, the “spirit of practical science,” in Japan「実学の精神」
The fair and egalitarian ideal of hangaku hankyo, which emphasizes having no essential distance between teachers and students and merely distinguishes between “those who have learned” and “those who have yet to learn,” has helped produce many leaders in every field of human endeavor, with an emphasis on those in industry. It has facilitated massive contributions to Japan’s modernization.
Hangaku hankyo - producing leaders who have supported modernization in a multitude of fields through human bonds created in a spirit of mutual teaching and learning between teachers and pupils
「 半 学 半 教 」
Jiga sakko is an expression which captures the essence of a fearless commitment to engage with new domains and unexplored fields in order to both create new precedents and reveal new ways forward. As one of the foremost research universities in Japan, which has expanded to include 10 undergraduate faculties and 14 graduate schools, Keio remains locked in daily battle with challenges in education, research, and medicine to solve global-scale problems.
A research university engaged in finding solutions to global-level problems by mobilizing the philosophy of jiga sakko: “creating history to define the future”

03 04What's Keio? What's Keio?
Studying in Japan. Living in Tokyo.
Unique traditions and the abundant natural scenes of the four seasons coexist in harmony with cutting-edge technologies
shaping the future. Keio University can be found in a prime location in the singular global megalopolis of Tokyo, which
was chosen as the second best city in the world as a location for overseas study in the QS Best Student Cities Ranking
2018. This is a city to which young people are inexorably drawn and a place where information and trends are created
and spread. Traditional events such as festivals go hand-in-hand with burgeoning cultural trends and happenings. It is also
a place where you will encounter generous and warm-hearted people. This is topped off by an enchanting food scene.
Culinary traditions from throughout the world come together in Tokyo, with pride of place being taken up by Japanese
washoku cuisine, now registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural property. Among the many surprises which surely await
you here are one of the busiest intersections in the world where up to 3,000 people can cross at any one time, and a
network of train lines which has all the appearance of a labyrinth. Studying at Keio means living in Tokyo. Now is the time
to experience your fill of Tokyo’s many charms.
05 06Studying in Japan. Living in Tokyo. Studying in Japan. Living in Tokyo.
2020 at KeioTokyo is currently in the global spotlight as the venue for the upcoming 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A constant
stream of people from every country in the world, endless stimulation, and boundless progress: One can only wonder what
limitless possibilities lie in wait for you in Tokyo, and the lessons this city beating at the heart of the world will impart. Keio’s
Hiyoshi Campus will host the British Olympic and Paralympic team’s preparation camps *. You too will have the chance to
take part in this global carnival. The time is right for you to join us in creating Tokyo and the year 2020 during this “once in a
lifetime” opportunity.*hosted competitions TBC

Part of the exquisite thrill of this project is the high degree of wriggle room and potential available. There is also a broad
scope in the different threads of these activities - taking in sports, internationalization, diversity, and regional exchange.
Within this context, activities will achieve their ultimate shape and new values will be generated by adding the “external
perspective on Japan” provided by students from overseas. We encourage students from overseas coming to Japan to take
advantage of this unique opportunity and join Keio University in cheering on Team GB and ParalympicsGB, and helping to
make the campus an ever more exciting place to be.
Our activities will live on in the history books.
KEIO 2020 Project
Support, Unite, Deliver.
The student-led KEIO 2020 Project for volunteer supporters of the British Olympic and Paralympic teams. Support the
athletes, unite the team, the region, and Keio as one, and deliver the spirit of omotenashi hospitality to move the
competitors’ hearts. Based on these three major principles, the participants in the KEIO 2020 Project are engaged
in preparations towards 2020. Through hands-on experience, with an emphasis on sports volunteer activities, they
are meanwhile learning to communicate with the athletes, as well as learning about the spirit of the competition,
culture, and organizational structures.

Learning at Keio Universitycreates a boundless future
A familiar and broad networkthat elevates your research
Aiming to be a physician-scientistwith world-class clinical experience
Growth through tea ceremony An environment where you can devoteyourself to learning to enjoy life
After studying at the École Centrale de Lille for two years, I
enrolled in the master’s program at Keio University for two
years through a double degree program. I chose to study in
Japan because I wanted to study outside Europe and in a non-
English-speaking country, and I was very interested in studying
in a new environment with a completely different culture. I was
highly motivated to go to Japan, which I think was a factor that
helped me pass the difficult selection process.
Here at Keio, the students are close with the professors and
there is a family-like bond between everyone in the laboratory.
I am good friends with the other students in my laboratory and
we have fun together every day. I hope to continue studying
here for at least three more years to get my PhD. Because of
Keio’s broad network, my own network has also expanded,
and as a result, I believe that my research will develop into
something more meaningful.
While studying clinical medicine for seven years in China, I saw
many patients suffering from incurable illnesses. I decided to major
in pathology, the field that bridges basic and clinical medicine, to
deepen my knowledge of cancer. After looking into the integrated
basic and clinical medicine and medical care programs at some
universities, I decided to enter Keio University because the program
at Keio’s Graduate School of Medicine was the most interesting to
me and offered everything I was looking for.
I got good results from the research project I carried out over the
past two years and these were well-received when I presented
the outcomes at the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Cancer
Association. I am continuing my research with the goal of
becoming a physician-scientist in Japan. I learned that what is
important is to first figure out what you want to do in the future
and what you need to study to get there.
The Keio University Hospital is in central Tokyo, and in fact is
very close to the main venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and
Paralympics. Just like the athletes who will come from all over the
world to chase their dreams, my fellow students and I are also
singularly focused on our goals.
I chose to study at Keio University because of the all-English
programs and because I could get a scholarship. In addition,
I was particularly interested in studying at Shonan Fujisawa
Campus (SFC) where I heard from a senior student that the
professors there, some who are well-known, are truly passionate
teachers. I was able to apply to the program from overseas and
I think it's great how you can submit a self-introductory video
instead of an interview. This helped me properly convey my
thoughts and enthusiasm for wanting to study at SFC.
I am making progress with my research in my major field,
architecture, and I am learning a lot in the tea ceremony club. In
the beginning, I couldn’t speak any Japanese, but with the help
of my friends, by the time of the university festival, I was able to
serve tea to the guests. Now, I am looking forward to getting a
tea ceremony qualification, which can be gotten after practicing
it for four years. At Keio, you have to be proactive and find
opportunities for yourself. However, by doing this, you will meet
so many different people and I think these are the most valuable
life experiences.
In the PEARL programme where you can learn economics in
English, there is an excellent learning environment in which
professors and small groups of students share opinions and
have frequent discussions on various topics. I have set my
own curriculum and I make sure that I have free time to join
in club activities and do part-time work, giving me an active
and balanced life both on and off campus. I’m surrounded
by Japanese students, international students, junior students,
and of course, professors, and it’s very meaningful to interact
with people from different countries and of different ages.
Keio University has a diverse international color and is highly
regarded worldwide, and I'm sure that my experiences here
will pave the way for my future success. For me, my goals
are to live abroad and to work in an area related to the
automotive industry, and I know that what I learn here will
serve me well, all the while having the time of my life.

On- and off-campus learningcreates a fulfilling student life
Taking a class on industrial economics on Mita Campus. These classes, which are held in Japanese, use Japanese companies as examples and I learn things in great depth.
Away from my desk at university and at my laboratory in Shibuya. I am absorbed in my project.
I have some free time between classes. I go for lunch with friends off-campus or read under the big ginkgo tree.
Taking a break at a café on the first floor. Many creators come to this café so I’m always inspired.
Mid-term presentation of my graduation thesis for my seminar. I get a lot of good advice from my professor and fellow students, and soon I will decide on the direction of my future studies.
Checking the VR program I’ve been working on for my thesis. I pay close attention to details in the music, graphics, and movement to fine tune the user experience.
Gathering information to help me find a job at the Student Lounge. This is an open space where many Japanese and international students interact daily, so I can also exchange information with various people here.
On the 30-minute commute from my laboratory in Shibuya to Hiyoshi Campus. Once there, my fellow laboratory members and I will make presentation materials for the next class.
Being enrolled at the Faculty of Economics, I spend a lot of my
time on Mita Campus. I often use the Media Center where I can
find all kinds of texts and materials, and I often go to the Global
Lounge to interact with other students from all over the world. I
am currently job hunting, and I am very grateful that I can get a
lot of valuable information on campus.
I am currently living a meaningful student life doing research in
Japan. I go between Hiyoshi Campus, where I take classes, give
presentations, and have business project meetings, and Shibuya,
where I conduct research in my lab. However, public transportation is
great in Tokyo, so it doesn’t take long to go from Hiyoshi to Shibuya.
For me, it is an ideal situation for my research.

The currency of Japan is the Japanese yen (¥) . There are various denominations such as the three paper notes of 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen,
and 1,000 yen and the 500 yen, 100 yen, 50 yen, 10 yen, 5 yen, and 1 yen coins. While cash payments are standard practice in Japan,
credit cards are accepted in many stores and it has recently become possible to shop using IC cards, even in convenience stores, in addition
to their use on public transport.

Keio University offers international students a range of housing, which vary in location, cost, and terms and conditions. Since there is a set number of available rooms in the dormitories, not all applicants will be able to get a room if there are too many applications. Renting private accommodation is another option for students. As it is not common to share a room or a house in Japan, most students who choose to do so rent a single room. Please refer to the website below for further information about student housing.

Our Alumni—From Keio to the World
Graduated from the Graduate School of Economics
Piotr Kroujkov (from Russia / France)
Graduated from the Faculty of Business and Commerce
Namhee Kong (from South Korea)
After coming to Keio as an exchange student, I came back to Tokyo
to do an internship at All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA) at the
recommendation of a professor. It was the first time for me to work at a
Japanese company, but I really enjoyed it. Even after the internship, ANA
continued to support my research and I started working there while still
a student.
The quality of life in Tokyo is good, and it is a unique and beautiful city
bustling with excitement. Life here is so great that I chose to stay and
work in Tokyo after graduation. I continued working at ANA, in their
marketing communication division, planning activities for the European
market. When I want to know if the communication activities we carry
out are effective, the research in economics I did at Keio and the data
analysis methods I learned continue to be very useful. As we understand
more about people and their actions, and that of companies and
markets, we can see how small behavioural interventions can influence
the actions of a large number of people. I find this very interesting.
This kind of work is now usually done in the field of marketing
communication, but my goal is to positively affect people beyond that.
For students who are thinking about studying in Japan, I think the most
important thing is to not build walls. You will have a more exciting
experience by taking on many challenges.
For me, Keio University was a place that allowed me to focus
on the road I wanted to take. It was a place that offered a lot of
freedom while fully supporting me whenever I set off to learn
something. After graduating, I went back to South Korea and
got a job at a Japanese construction company. After three years
there, I began to want to work more globally, so I started to
look for jobs in Japan and Singapore.
The really great thing about being a Keio Alumni while I was
job hunting was the Mita-kai* network that exists all over the
world. The chairperson of the Singapore Mita-kai introduced
me to local companies. Singapore is a global country, but I felt
stronger about the potential in the Japanese market, and finally
decided to move to a global company in Japan. Tokyo is a city
that fuses retro with digital, and is the coolest city in the world.
I am very proud to work in this city.
In the future, I want to work in Shanghai where our Asia base
is located, and then in Sweden where our head office is based.
Every day I am working hard to achieve these goals and I’m
sure my Keio network will be a great asset going forward. I will
always cherish my ties to Keio University.
Making use of what I learned at Keio in my work My career is supported by my “connections”

Alumni of Keio university are cal led
“Jukuin.” Most of the 370,000 alumni of
our university continue to hold dear the
bonds they have formed at Keio.
Mita-kai are independent, volunteer-run
groups which bring together Keio alumni.
Mita-kai take the form of clubs, societies,
and seminars arranged around different
themes, such as the yearly Mita-kai open to
those graduating from Keio in a particular
academic year, and the regional Mita-kai
established in various regions in Japan and
abroad. There are also Mita-kai by place
or industry of employment for those in
particular corporations or fields.
There are around 800 Mita-kai in Japan and
around 70 overseas. They are a platform for
exchange and continued friendship among
Keio alumni. Jukuin throughout the globe
get together and engage in a variety of
activities, including supporting the students
currently charting their way in various fields.
