Margo Selby showcases her handwoven framed textiles alongside an archive of her design work at Rochester Art Gallery and the Huguenot Museum. This special partnership exhibition celebrates the prolific portfolio of work Margo has created in her fifteen year career as a textile artist and designer.

Central to this display is a collection of hand-woven artworks created using a technique called Lampas. Lampas is a term for a woven structure that was initially developed and used by French Huguenot weavers to create decorative brocade fabrics. Margo is now using these weave structures in a new way to create simple geometric framed works with a modernist feel.

Margo is an internationally renowned textile artist who studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design, and the Royal College of Art. Subsequently working in industrial mills she united her handwoven constructions with industrial machinery to create the unique 3-dimensional fabrics that became the trademark of the Margo Selby brand, from rugs and furnishing fabrics, to accessories.Since moving to Whitstable in 2012 Margo has been heavily focussing on her art practice creating hand-woven works, exploring how colour and structure unite.

‘When designing a cloth for commercial use there are often so many boundaries; the repeat sizes, sampling considerations, and durability are some examples of these. I wanted to remove these boundaries and begin creating cloth as artwork simply for the sake of exploring colour and construction.’

The Huguenot Museum shop will be selling a range of Margo’s textiles, including cushions and scarves from 1 November. Most of the work in the exhibition will also be for sale.

Talk by Margo Selby

Margo will give some insight into her commercial collaborations with partners including Osborne & Little, John Lewis, Alternative Flooring and Transport for London. She will also talk about the connection her artworks have with Huguenot weaving, as well as the creative and technical processes behind these pieces.
