PREDICTION OF FLUSHING REQUIREMENTSFOR GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION

This section provides the assumptions and equations used in the mass balance calculation forpredicting the approximate number of pore volumes to be flushed during the remediation of thegroundwater contamination in the bedrock aquifer beneath the Heleva Landfill Site.

Pore Volume Requirementi -

Based on distribution of contaminants between fractured bedrock and groundwater, and a model ofcontact between fractured rock and groundwater, the rate of contaminant removal from the aquifercan be calculated.

Assumptions used in the model are:

• Fractured rock/groundwater equilibrium• Distribution coefficients used are valid• The contact model is as follows:

- Saturated bedrock is 0.99 solids, 0.01 water- Water is completely drained- Fresh (uncontaminated) water is used to resaturate bedrock

TCE was selected as a first cut contaminant. Any contaminant with a portion coefficient less than TCEwill be removed at a higher rate.
