STEWARDSHIP

“...they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh...” (Matthew 2:11)

Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!

PARISH LEADERS: LEAD A SMALL GROUP

Did you make a New Year’s Resolution to get more involved in the life of the Church? Look no further! We need your help! We are making some adjustments to our approach to high school youth ministry this year, transitioning to a small-group model with a large-group twist! We plan on meeting 3 out of the 4 weeks at the small-group level, diving deep into Scripture and Prayer, while meeting once a month at the large-group level, and gathering for some serious community building fun.

Did you know there are over 1,400 teens registered at Church of the Ascension? With your leadership and wisdom, we could breathe life and transform the young Church. Consider leading a small group of 5-7 teens this year. Signups can be found on the youth ministry page of our website!

CALIX SOCIETY January 8, 7:00PM Church

The Calix Society (www.calixsociety.org) is a national association of Catholics in 12-Step recovery (AA, NA, OA, AlAnon’ etc.). For us, the spirituality of the 12-steps is greatly enhanced when practiced in the context of our Catholic faith. If you have been active in your 12-step group for six months or more, and would like to talk with other Catholics about how they have incorporated their Catholicism into their steps, call Neil at 913-645-7244, or Mary at 913-747-5039.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT MINISTRY January 9, 9:00AM (After Morning Mass) St. Luke Rm.

The Bereavement Support Ministry at Church of the Ascension meets the second Saturday of every month in the St. Luke Room, unless otherwise noted on the parish calendar, after 8:30am Mass for support and education. Our next meeting is on Saturday, January 9.

ST. MARY’S FOOD KITCHEN January 8, Before 8:30AM Drop Off by St. John Rm. Hallway Entrance

We need your help!! Due to the COVID 19 virus, St. Mary's Food Kitchen has discontinued their hot meal service for the homeless in our communities. In lieu of the hot dinner, sack lunches are being distributed to the hungry to take with them.

How can you help? We are looking for 15 individuals who are willing to commit to making 15 sack lunches. This will entail shopping for food items, preparing the sandwiches, assembling and delivering completed sack lunches to the hallway located outside of the St. John Room no later than 8:30am, January 8. A driver(s) will deliver the lunches to the food kitchen for further disbursement. To volunteer or for further information, please call Dee Winters at 913-681-6112.

Suggested lunch items are as follows: bread of any kind (except bread that is very dark or heavily seeded), ham, roast beef, chicken, turkey, lunch meat, cheeses, lunch size potato chips, fruit or pudding cups (please include a spoon and napkin), apples, oranges (no soft fruits that are easily crushed e.g. bananas), protein bars, packaged cookies or brownies, etc. Other creative ideas are certainly welcomed! Since paper tears easily, it is suggested that you use new one gallon Ziploc baggies to assemble these lunches. Please include a 12-16 ounce bottle of water (room temperature) in each bag. Please no peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, soft fruits or fresh vegetables. You are welcome to save your grocery receipts and present them to the parish office for reimbursement at a later date. Thank you so much and may God bless you!

HIGH SCHOOL SMALL GROUPS PARENTS:

Did you know that in order to pandemic-proof our youth group for high school we have started meeting in small groups? If you are worried that your son or daughter might have missed the deadline, we have great news! New groups are forming for a kick-off in January! Now is the time to sign up, so please head over to our website and sign them up for a small group. Go to www.kcascension.org and under the “Ministries” drop-down, click on the Youth Ministry tab. DEMONSTRATION MASS WITH FATHER TOM January 11, 6:30PM Church

Do you remember why we gather at the Mass? What does Amen mean in Hebrew? Are you actively engaged during the homily trying to see if you can find God’s one thing he is telling you? Mass is more than a meal or an hour of obligation. If you are new to Catholicism, or you are a 100-year old, lifelong Catholic, you are invited to our Demonstration Mass. Fr. Tom will walk through each step of the Mass and explain the traditions, and why each step is important to our faith journey. This is an instructional demonstration Mass not a full Mass so there will not be a consecration of the Eucharist.

WEEKLY PRAYER

The Epiphany of the Lord Little Drummer Boy Did you know that the only reason we say that there were three wise men is that they brought three gifts? The Bible never says their number or their names. The gifts tell us about the givers. And these special gifts--gold, frankincense, and myrrh--tell us much. When one king visited or sent an ambassador to another, he would give a gift of gold to show that he acknowledged the kingship of the other. So the first gift of the wise men tells us they recognized Jesus as King. The second gift is a type of incense, which was used in Jesus time to worship God. So this gift shows the wise men paying homage to Jesus' divinity. The gift of myrrh is oil used to anoint the dying. It reminds us of Jesus suffering and death on the cross. So what gifts do we have for Jesus? Maybe we can take a hint from the wise men. If we acknowledge Jesus as king, maybe a better gift than gold would be to pledge our obedience to him. Each day we can promise to live our vocation as best we can, to love those around us, and forgive those who hurt us. A better way than burning incense to pay homage to Jesus' divinity is to take time to pray throughout the day. Some people are able to attend daily Mass, others spend time in adoration before the Eucharist, or even a few minutes of their lunch break to say the rosary. As for the gift of myrrh, we can give Jesus the crosses we bear each day. When we accept suffering in our lives, especially that caused by our sins, we give ourselves to Jesus as he gave himself for us on the cross. The song "Little Drummer Boy" reminds us that the best gift is not necessarily the most expensive. Instead, it is the simple gift that only we can give. Let Epiphany remind us to offer our lives to Jesus each day.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY A New Battery

When members of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church recently dropped off baby shower items at a Sarasota pregnancy center (CPC), they included an envelope with cash donations from those unable to go shopping because of Covid. They told the nurse it was “emergence money” for a mother in need.

On a Saturday, a young woman called CPC. Her boyfriend was pressuring her to have an abortion and she was undecided. With the encouragement of a CPC staffer, she agreed to come in for an ultrasound. The day of her appointment, she was a “no-show”. Concerned about her, the staffer called her to check-in. “I can’t come in. My car battery is dead and I have no money to buy a new one”. What to do? The CPC staff reached for the “emergency money” for a new battery subject to one condition—that she come in for an ultrasound afterwards. She agreed. After getting the new battery and the ultrasound, the couple was still undecided. As she left the CPC, she gave a note to the CPC staff: “Please pray that my boyfriend understands I want to keep the baby.” The staff prayed, wondering if they would hear from her again. A few days later the CPC followed up on how she was doing. She sang out the answer: “We’re doing great! We decided we’re keeping our baby!!” An emergency fund, a new battery, a new baby and a young couple that now knows they are not alone and that there are those in the community who truly love and care about them. May this inspire all of us in 2021. Happy New Year!

Plan more meat-free meals in 2021! The meat and dairy industry is responsible for more emissions than all the world's planes, trains, cars and boats combined. Why not try something new - and usually more healthful? Pick a day of the week for plant-based menus! Many delicious and nutritious recipes are available on-line.

INVITATION

As baptized Catholics we are called to go out and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others. When was the last time you invited a family back to church or to become involved again in faith formation? Consider reaching out to invite a friend back to practicing their faith. The little things can make a big impact.

TEENS ENCOUNTER CHRIST January 16-18 Prairie Star Ranch, Williamsburg, KS.

We made the difficult decision not to take a delegation to March for Life in January in DC. But this opens up the possibility for teens to attend the Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) retreat. We will provide a small group retreat experience for high schoolers on January 16-18, 2021 at Prairie Star Ranch (PSR). We will be following social distancing and other safety procedures that allowed Camp Tekakwitha to happen. TEC is a 3-day retreat based on the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. TEC involves 16 and older adolescents encountering Christ in a way that many have never experienced before. On a TEC retreat, you will have the opportunity to grow in your relationship with Christ through talks, group discussion, individual reflection, prayer, and sharing in the Sacraments. The weekend retreats are led by a team of youth, adults and a priest as spiritual director. To sign up go to: www.sunflowertec.org.
