• It also fits into Society and Culture because human rights still matter to child slaves and because the government controls this area of work.

Child labour has serious consequences that stay with the individual and with society for far longer than the years of

childhood. Young workers not only face dangerous working conditions. They face long-term physical, intellectual and

emotional stress. They face an adulthood of unemployment and illiteracy."

Statistics!The International Labour Organization estimates there are 218 million working children aged between five and 17 (2006)

126 million are estimated to work in the worst forms of child labour -- one in every 12 of the world's five to 17 years olds (2006)

8.4 million children are in slavery, trafficking, debt bondage and other forms of forced labour, forced recruitment for armed conflict, prostitution and pornography (2002)

Girls are particularly in demand for domestic work

Around 70 per cent of child workers carry out unpaid work for their families

What do you know about child Slavery?

Child Slavery is very bad especially in third world countries. Many Children have to be sold by there families into various factories because they cannot afford to pay for them. That slavery is forcing people to work under harsh conditions for little or no pay. Child Slavery is very self explanatory where little kids work in factories and in third world countries and have to be slaves for employers. It is where children are forced to work.

What is your opinion on Child Slavery?

I think Child Slavery is a disgusting and malicious abuse that no child or their families should have to face. It shouldn’t happen and people should be doing more to stop it.

What do you do to prevent child slavery?

There family sponsors two different charities, one called doctors without borders and the other save the children. Another one went to Morocco where there was an orphanage with children who would be sold as slaves if not sponsored so she sponsored two of these children.

• CHOCOLATE: it's the most popular treat used as a reward for kids, but what most Australians don't realise is that every time they indulge their children with a chocolate snack, they could be unwittingly supporting the enslavement of thousands of abused children in West Africa.

• The world's largest cocoa producers, the Ivory Coast and Ghana have been found guilty by the United Nations and US Congress of exporting cocoa made by trafficked and imprisoned children.

• It is estimated more than 100,000 children work in the Ivory Coast's cocoa industry under "the worst forms of child labour," and that about 10,000 are slaves.

• As the Ivory Coast produces 43 per cent of the world's cocoa, it is likely almost half the chocolate products sold in Australia could be linked to child slavery.

• In the last financial year, Victorian chocolate manufacturers alone imported 3 million kilograms of Ivory Coast cocoa paste.

• Aly Diabate, Mali

Aly was 12 years old when a slave trader promised him $150 and a bicycle for working on a cocoa farm. Instead Aly was sold for about $35 to a cocoa farmer who regularly beat the boy with a bicycle chain and cocoa tree branches.

“The beatings were a part of my life. Anytime they loaded you with bags and

you fell while carrying them nobody helped you. Instead they beat you and beat you

until you picked it up again.”

• Held forcibly, they must perform tiring work for 80 to 100 hours per week. Those who attempt to escape are beaten. When there wounds are almost healed they are sent back out to the field to work.

• When not working as many as 18 slaves can be locked inside a small shed

(20’x 24’). They sleep on planks with one small hole for air and use a bucket for a

toilet.

What We Can Do To Stop Child Slavery!

• In future we are only buy Australian made products we know that no child is harmed from the making of this products.

• We can donate to the Polaris Project which tries to prevent Child Slavery.

• Always ask the shop keeper how the clothing was made and by who. If it’s from a factory where kids are forced make them say NO! because you are giving the shop keeper an idea not to sell these products.

• Here as teenagers in Australia we live a carefree life where our only worries are what we are going to get in our math’s exam whereas if you live in third world country as a teenager you have had a

forced job for almost all of your childhood and their worries are much more severe

than ours.
