and Jimmy V were college roommates and teammates; it was Bob who promised Jim that The V Foundation would succeed and be instrumental in finding cures for cancer.

Dear Friends,

The V Foundation’s 14th annual fundraiser, the V Wine Celebration, garnered nearly $4 million over the weekend of August 3 & 4, 2012, for cancer research.

The V Foundation’s signature fund-raising event attracted attendees from all over the U.S. to the Napa Valley for a gala weekend of events and activities with a serious underlying purpose: to benefit the foundation’s efforts to support significant cancer research at major institutions and research centers nationwide. To date, the V Wine Celebration has raised $47 mil-lion since it was first held in 1998.

Chairman’s Message continued from cover

Guests welcomed back as V host ESPN Studio Analyst Lou Holtz—legendary football coach and college football Hall of Famer—and his wife, Beth, who were joined by celebrity guests and V supporters including Jim Allegro, Emeritus Director, ESPN, Inc.; Steve Bornstein, President and Chief Executive Officer, NFL Network; Robin Roberts, co-anchor, ABC’s Good Morning America; and Lesley Visser, Sports Commentator for CBS and HBO.

The 14th annual V Wine Celebration kicked off Friday evening with its popular “Let’s Get it Started” Party at The Pavilion at The Vintage Estates in Yountville. Honored were longtime V supporters and Vintage Estates owners and hosts, Donna Egan and her son, Kerry; and Managing Director David Shipman and his wife, Claudia. The weekend’s activities culminated with a gala dinner and live auction at Nickel & Nickel Winery. Suzanne Pride Bryan of Pride Mountain Vineyards was honored as the V Vintner Grant recipient. A breast cancer survivor herself, Suzanne shared the story of her father Jim Pride’s battle with bladder cancer.

This year’s Fund A Need benefited the First Responders of 9/11 who are being diagnosed with cancer. A $1 million grant was announced to support a collaborative effort between the Fire Department of the City of New York WTC Health Program, Montefiore Medical Center, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and the National Cancer Institute to fund research for myeloma, leukemia and myelodysplasia.

The Bentley Raffle garnered over $220,000 and Launny Steffens, proprietor of Vineyard 7 & 8, was the lucky winner of a gorgeous, new, custom 2013 Bentley Continental GT Coupe.

The evening finished with a show-stopping private performance by American Rock Musician Chris Isaak.

We look forward to celebrating the 15th Anniversary August 2 & 3, 2013, in our continued fight against cancer! Our vision is to elevate life with every paddle raised! Kindest Regards,

A Decade of Dedication, A Lifetime of Love

After a national search, Susan Braun, who most recently served as the executive director of Commonweal and has extensive experi-ence leading major nonprofits, was selected to be The V Founda-tion’s new Chief Executive Officer.

“I am deeply honored to be chosen as the next CEO of The V Foundation. The organization has a stellar record for funding top-quality, important cancer research. With its strong board, staff, and scientific advisors, it is poised to make even greater strategic contributions to what we know about cancer—its origins, its evolu-tion, and its treatments—and to ending the suffering that cancer causes millions of individuals and their loved ones each year,” said Susan Braun. “I look forward to all that we will do together to put an end to cancer.”

Nick Valvano, Jim’s brother, served as Chief Executive Officer of The V Foundation from March 1999 through September 2012 and has been a member of the Board of Directors since its incep-tion. His dedication to The V Foundation shows his passion to fulfill Jim’s dream. Valvano brought years of senior management and sales experience to The V Foundation through his work with Xerox, Wang and Olivetti. Valvano began his professional career in education, teaching and coaching high school basketball for 10 years. Through his leadership at The V Foundation, Valvano established relationships with several cancer centers nationwide in fighting the war on the disease. By focusing on the need to raise money, Valvano was instrumental in The V Foundation’s success in awarding more than $100 million in grants across 38 states.

Five years ago, Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America and V Founda-tion Board member, beat breast cancer. In certain cases, the treatment for cancer can cause other serious medical problems. A recent examination revealed MDS or myelodysplastic syn-drome, a disease of the blood and bone marrow, once known as preleukemia. Robin received her MDS diagnosis on the very day that Good Morning America finally beat the Today Show for the first time in 16 years. Over the next few months, Robin will be undergoing treatment, while bringing awareness and giving hope to others. “I’ve always been a fighter, and with all of your prayers and support, a winner,” Roberts told friends. “My doctors tell me I’m going to beat this, and I know it’s true.” The V Foundation counts their blessings for having Robin as a passionate, strong and thriving team member and role model in the fight against cancer!

At the V Wine Celebration gala, the most compelling part of the evening was the Fund A Need which honored the First Responders. The V Foundation’s CEO, Nick Valvano, acknowledged the dozens of men and women in uniform surrounding the room, Napa County’s First Responders, who received a standing ovation from the apprecia-tive crowd. After a poignant video showing images from that fateful day accompanied by a stirring rendition of “God Bless America” sung by New York City police officer Daniel Rodriguez, bidders honored these heroes by uniting to donate more than $800,000 to support a col-laborative effort between the Fire Department of the City of New York WTC Health Program, Montefiore Medical Center, the Albert Ein-stein College of Medicine, and the National Cancer Institute, funding research for myeloma, leukemia and myelodysplasia.“We acknowledge the heroes who rushed to Ground Zero in the hours and days after the attacks of 9/11 who are now sick, and pay tribute to the noble men and women who rose to the defense of America in a time of war,” said V Foundation Chairman Bob Lloyd.

In 2004, my father, Jim Pride, was battling blad-der cancer and had been fighting it for three years when I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carci-noma, Positive HER2 Neu, also known as one of the many types of breast cancer. We were both treated at Stan-ford University Medical Center and when you think of fun adventures to have with your Dad, side-by-side chemo treatments probably isn’t one of them. We sat through

each other’s surgeries. We both had radiation. And the end of the story is that I made it, but Dad didn’t. Cancer can happen to anyone. So ask yourself…How far do you think your donation can go? How much hope can you generate? Because we owe it to those who have gone before and we owe it to those who fight today, and we owe it to the people who will find themselves battling cancer tomorrow. I thank Jim Valvano for having the foresight, even in his time of need, to establish this organization, with the help of ESPN, which has become so significant in the fight against cancer. Because if you ever have to hear the words, “it’s cancer,” in that instant all you have is hope. Hope that there is cutting edge research advancing somewhere and in time to help you. We can do this… We just can’t give up.

There are very few organizations that can truly say that they have stand-out individuals who have offered their time and talents in support of a common goal since day one. Derek & Cathy Reisinger first volunteered in 1998 and offered their help and support to do whatever it would take to get the V Wine Celebration’s inaugural event off the ground and raise modest funding for cancer research. Every year without fail for the past 14 years, the V Wine Celebration has relied on this dynamic duo to be team leaders who have worked tirelessly to help raise millions of dollars for loved ones who are battling cancer. Only those who have learned the power of sincere and selfless contribution experience life’s deepest joy: true fulfillment.“We are truly honored to be a part of such an incredible organization that is the V Wine Celebration—like no other for its dedication, success and passion.”
