I am hopeful that March will bring better weather!! Due to a historic storm, we found the club closed or operating on limited hours in February. If you were negatively impacted by this, we sincerely apologize. During the event, road conditions in Bridle Trails were treacherous and there were many trees and power lines affected by the snow, making it dangerous to get to the club. Our goal when we get storms or outages is to ensure the safety of our members and staff. When events like this occur, our staff needs time to clear the walkways and parking lot to ensure everyones safety. Your patience when this happens is very much appreciated. I would like to thank the staff and the members who helped with shoveling walkways to expedite the process. Our communication plan when we have something that changes our normal operating hours is to first update the website and then send out an email blast to let you know our status. In addition, we update our Facebook page and will update our message on the phone system. If you are not receiving emails, check your junk folder or contact Julie to get added to our email list (unfortunately, if you are not receiving emails, you probably arent reading this). Fellow members – please reach out to your friends and ask them if they receive the club email and to contact Julie if they are not getting them. We held a New Member welcome event in February. Thanks to Laurie, Julie, Chad, Kathryn, Brad Bennett, Anne Glenny and the membership committee for putting on a great event. It was so fun to meet some of our newest members and talk about why I love this club!! Our summer camp schedule will be released the 1st week in March. We are offering full day, half day and 2-hour short camps. Stop by the front desk for a summer camp brochure. It is that time of year that we think about board nominations for next year. I would like to thank Molly Lammers for taking on the role of Nominating Committee Chair. If you are interested or know of someone that would be an asset to the Club and the Board of Directors, please feel free to contact Molly. This is a great way to learn about the opera- tion of the club and participate in the process to continue to meet the needs of our members. There are many other ways to participate in the club. Commit- tee sign ups will be posted in the summer. Also, we will be put- ting out an annual survey later this spring. Finally, my inbox is always open for feedback – [email protected]. We survived February! I can’t believe it’s here, but welcome March and hopefully good bye snow and other crazy weather moments! I hope those that are running to the desert for the BNP get the sun-shine and great tennis they are searching for. Thank you to our dedicated staff and members’ pa-tience during our snow and power outage days. Those were 10 very long days that will go down as one to remember in the Pacific Northwest.

With all the cancellations to programs, USTA and Cup matches, plus the Bellevue Club/Central Park tournament, you may notice a lot of activity on our courts this weekend trying to reschedule and make up missed matches. Captains, if you can get your lineups to the front desk early and remind the visiting team to all pay at once, we can get through the chaos and get you on the courts sooner.

Another item that the snow days brought awareness to was our CPTC website and GAMETIME. These are two great places to get information about what is going on at the Club, plus if there is no one at the front desk, accessing Gametime online allows you to book and delete your own courts. I have included instructions below to log in to both of these online tools.

CPTC WEBSITE & GAMETIME: We have so much information for you at your fingertips. If you log into the Member side of the CPTC web-site, you can find Board minutes, financials, maintenance and amenities request forms, all committee mission statements, policies – check it out when you can. If you cannot remember how to log in - first your member number, then your last name. GAMETIME gives you access to what is happening on the courts. If you have not done so, please log in and enter your information. This allows us to see your level of play and help link you up with other members. Many members are taking advantage of viewing the courts and waitlist on-line, as well as making their own reserva-tions and looking for open courts. If you don’t have the log in information you can download it here. And with the power outage it’s always good to remember: if it happens while you are on site, follow the lit emergency EXIT signs that will lead you out of the buildings. If you call the Club and you do not get our voicemail but instead it says service not available, it means we are without power. PSE has a website that will show outages in the area. They will also update the site with potential times service will be reinstated. While it’s not always perfect, it can give you an idea of what is going on. Congratulations to Lisa Moldrem! On March 7 Lisa is being inducted into the Seattle Public School Ath-letic Hall of Fame. This is a celebration of the ac-complishments of outstanding SPS high school stu-dent athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and athletic supporters. Check this out: http://www.spsathletichalloffame.org/ Crazy weather be gone! And longer daylight starts March 10 as we spring forward into daylight savings. March will also be filled with a St. Patrick’s Day themed mix up Friday night (March 15)! Happy Spring! Julie Wheadon Club Manager

The Tennis Committee did not meet in February due to snowmageddon. We conducted business through email and approved three petitions for nonmembers to be added to three CPTC USTA teams. While we re-quire team captains to make every effort to field teams with Central Park players, we do understand that from time to time due to injury, travel schedules and life events that teams will look to add non-members. We want to encourage club members that may have interest in playing on USTA teams to ensure that you indicate your interest and sign up at the front desk. Our goal is to be as inclusive as possible.

Due to Mother Nature the Membership Committee did not meet in February. Our next meeting will be Monday March 4th. Fortunately we were able to squeeze in our President’s welcome to new members before we shut down due to snow. It was a successful event enriched by the latest and greatest in racquet technology. Thank you to our teaching pros, Kathryn Osborne and Chad Smith who supplied us with plenty of demo rac-quets to try and improve our game. We hope to continue this in the future, and make it a twice a year event. We are working on our St. Patrick’s Day event in March. Be ready to wear your best green for a bit of Irish luck!

The Cup season has (un)officially finished. While two teams are completing rescheduled matches due to the snow, we are all celebrating a successful season. Our Rainier 2 Cup team finished number one in the Seattle Area Cup Tennis league! Big congratulations to those ladies for all their hard work and dedication. Their cap-tain, Zhanbing Wu, expressed gratitude to Lisa Moldrem for her coaching wisdom (see photo on pg 2). With so much to celebrate, the Cup Committee organized an End-of-Season Social with fun tennis followed by a luncheon which included door prizes and general merriment. With the 2018-2019 season all wrapped up, the Committee will now turn its focus to organizing the 2019-2020 season.

The Finance Committee had an abbreviated meeting in February. There’s nothing significant to report from the January financials. We’re approaching having enough data to review our food service vendors and refine our financial projections. This will be considered in the coming months. Our snow removal expenses should be largely offset by lower landscaping costs over the same period, resulting in little impact to our financials. The Finance Committee also did a cursory review of the recent Property Condition Assessment, with an eye for changes to Capital Fund planning. There should be no near term impact on our Capital Fund plan. We also continued discussions related to the investment returns for the Capital Fund and will be considering a recommendation to the Board soon on this front. The last topic discussed relates to our outstanding debt. Our loan payment strategy has been put in place for 2019, including monitoring to ensure no pre-payment penal-ties are incurred during the calendar year. Discussions have started related to our November 2020 rate ad-justment and options going forward. As always, stop me if you have any questions. All of the failed lights in the tennis buildings had been replaced, but we are still experiences new failures with the replaced lamps. The Facilities Committee is continuing to work with the lighting manufacturer to have the issue fixed once and for all. The tile restoration work in the men’s shower was completed last month and we have received positive feedback on the outcome. Work on remodeling the Pros’ offices has started and we expect to have that work done over the next several weeks. Lastly, the work to repair the roof leak between Courts 3 and 4 in the Reed Building is scheduled to start the beginning of March. As the newly appointed Nominating Committee Chair and in accordance with the Club Bylaws, I am pleased to announce the Nominating Committee for the 2019-2022 Election of Directors. Amy Cooley, Linda Green-law, Beth Hom, Kristen Grobstok, (Current Board member) John Iwanski, Thomas Rogers and I will be work-ing hard to select at least one person (and not more than two) to run for the three Board vacancies. If you are interested or know of someone that would be an asset to the Club and the Board of Directors, please feel free to contact Molly Lammers at [email protected] or any of the committee members.

Summer 2019 Adventure

What’s the most iconic peak in the lower 48? Mount Rainier! At 14,411 feet, Mount Rainier dwarfs the surround-ing Cascade Mountains and its massive base dominates the landscape. We have 2 hikes planned for you. Our first hike will be in the forest and meadows below Paradise, including a lap around Reflection Lakes. Day 2 will feature the EPIC Paradise to Camp Muir assault. Starting at Para-dise Lodge, (5400’elevation) the 4.5 mile hike will take us up the Muir Snow Field to the climbers’ bivouac, Camp Muir, (10,000’ elevation). Views of Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood and of course massive Mount Rainier will dominate the horizon. Mount Rainier’s glaciers, volcan-ic rock and summit will amaze you. After soaking in the views and eating lunch we’ll begin our descent. Back at the lodge we’ll enjoy dinner and celebrate our adventure on Mount Rainier! Contact us today for more information: [email protected] or 206-595- 3021. Cardio vs. Resistance Training: Do You REALLY Need to do Both? When it comes to exercise, there has long been a debate about which type is best. Is CARDIO the gold standard? Or do the benefits of RESISTANCE TRAINING far outweigh those of cardio? While both forms of exercise pro-vide huge benefits for your health, the choice depends entirely on your goals. So, we’re going to examine a few common goals and evaluate the pros and cons. And what are the “rules” of cardio for different goals anyway?

What if your specific health goal is weight loss? For years we’ve been told that cardio is the answer to weight loss. Well, one Duke University study demon-strates that this still holds true. The study examined the results of 119 previously sedentary individuals over 8 months. Some participants performed cardio only, others did strictly resistance training, and a third group did a combination of both.

The Results? The cardio-only group lost the most amount of weight (4lbs) while the resistance training group gained 2lbs. Although this 2 lbs was in fact lean muscle mass, it didn’t result in any additional fat loss over the course of the study.

What if your goal is overall better health - and longevity? While cardiovascular exercise is beneficial for heart health and disease prevention, when it comes to longevity, resistance training is the clear winner. As Dr. Robert Schreiber, an instructor at Harvard Medical School states, "just doing aerobic exercise is not adequate. Unless you are doing strength training, you will become weaker and less functional. The average 30 year old will lose one quarter of their muscle by age 70 and half of it by age 90.” How much cardio do I need to do in general? According to the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, you should aim for 150 minutes of moderate to vigor-ous aerobic exercise each week. Choose from running, power walking, cycling, aerobics or cross country skiing -- the choice is yours! Aim for three 50-minute sessions (or divide it into shorter more frequent sessions) of any ac-tivity that gets your heart rate up. Break a sweat too ;) So, how much resistance training is enough? According to the Harvard Medical School we should aim to train all the major muscles of the body 2-3 times per week. Regular resistance training sessions will not only increase your overall strength but allow you to do everyday activities with more ease.

Do you really need to choose between cardio & resistance training?

While the Duke University study did favor cardio for weight loss, the 3rd test group in the same study did show

interesting results. This group did a combination of both cardio and weights resulting in the best change in overall

body composition. This combination of the two types of physical training helped participants lose fat AND gain

lean muscle mass -- which is key for maintaining strength AND longevity. In today’s busy world it can be difficult

to find time to fit in exercise at all. While your specific health goals will play a big part in choosing the type of

workouts you do, the most important thing is that you’re staying consistently active. Aim to exercise for 150

minutes every week (or more) AND eat a healthful & balanced diet.
