August 30, 2020 Dear Friends in Christ: Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:

At the time of the writing of this bulletin letter during the week, the outcome of Hurricane Laura remains uncertain. I addressed matters pertaining to the hurricane in my mid-week update video, so for this space, I simply offer my prayers for safety for all in the path of this storm, whether it be Southeast Texas or Louisiana. We continue to pray for all in the path of storms throughout this active hurricane season. I cannot help but notice the next storm name on the list: Hurricane Nana – given that this is the affectionate name in my family for my maternal grandmother, this cannot help but make me smile. There are so many jokes that could be made about Hurricane Nana – somewhere my family members are cracking up. I hope that the storm that bears the name of Nana may indeed end up being a joking matter and put no one in harm’s way.

In my update video for the week, I also shared the

news that we have a new priest in residence with us. Fr. Richard McNeillie, the Vocation Director for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, has taken up residence with us for as long as the pandemic lasts in order to be able to better focus on his duties. While he is not formally assigned here and is just in residence, I am nonetheless excited to have him present with us. Unlike Fr. Loc and I who try our best, Fr. Richard is fully bilingual, so this will be welcome to our Spanish speaking community. Fr. Richard will begin to celebrate Mass regularly at the Co-Cathedral during the week and will also be celebrating some Sunday Masses. I invite you to greet Fr. Richard the next time you see him.

Finally, some may be aware that the Most Reverend

Curtis Guillory, SVD, Bishop of Beaumont, was recently granted retirement by the Holy Father. Bishop Guillory served as Auxiliary Bishop for the then Diocese of Galveston-Houston from 1988 through 2000, so many of you may remember him from his time at the parish. With the acceptance of his resignation on June 9 came the news of the appointment of a new shepherd for that flock: Father David Toups, a priest of the Diocese of St. Petersburg in Florida and rector of their regional seminary.

Message from the Rector P. 2

At the end of last week, I had the pleasure to accompany Cardinal DiNardo and his new Priest-Secretary, Father Matthew Suniga, to Beaumont to assist with the ordination of Bishop Toups. Aside from tying up a final loose thread from my previous assignment (I had helped to make arrangements for this while still in the chancery and agreed to help after my departure), it is always special to be present for the ordination of a bishop.

In Beaumont’s cathedral, in the presence of his

family and friends, the priests of the diocese, the representative of the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, and over thirty bishops from around the United States, Bishop-Elect Toups was presented to the people of the diocese. The clergy of Beaumont formally asked Cardinal DiNardo to ordain him as their bishop. The scroll from the Holy Father, appointing Bishop-Elect Toups as the new shepherd of Beaumont, was read to all present in the presence of the delegate of the Nuncio, who is the delegate of the Holy Father to the United States. With thunderous applause, the people welcomed the Bishop-Elect as Cardinal DiNardo assented to the request to ordain this man as their new shepherd. The bishops all laid hands upon him and Cardinal DiNardo prayed the ancient prayer of ordination, making him a bishop. Bishop Toups then had his head anointed and was invested with his episcopal ring, miter, and crozier. Finally, he was led to the cathedra, the Bishop’s official seat, where he sat down and symbolically took possession of the diocese. As we pray with readings these two Sundays about the keys of the kingdom and the office of the apostles, this was a beautiful reminder of the timelessness of the Church as she is shepherded and protected by Christ through the succession of the apostles over the millennia.

Sadly, at his welcome dinner, after having seen early

reports about activity in the Gulf, I watched the mayor of Beaumont and many dignitaries welcome him to the city. I leaned over to Bishop Toups at the dinner table and told him that the final welcome to make it official would be the first hurricane that made its way to Beaumont, as Bishop Guillory suffered through so many during his time as bishop. I joked that I hoped this “welcome” would occur sooner rather than later, but it looks like that welcome may be imminent. Please join me in praying for the people of East Texas, who have suffered much at the hands of hurricanes and floods (even more than Houston), that they may be safe and sound from wind and flood.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place all our trust in You. Amen.

Very Reverend Jeffrey L. Bame Rector & Parish Administrator

Filmed in Europe, this first full-length fea-ture movie on Augustine uses a historic

backdrop to tell the true story of one of the Church's most beloved and well-known

saints. Its message of sin, conversion, and redemption is as timely today as it was in the fifth century. It is the story of a gifted

man who pursues fame and fortune without a moral compass—and the dramatic changes

that occur in his soul when challenging events lead him to see the light of truth. It also chronicles the collapse of the Roman

world and how Augustine laid the intellectu-al foundations of what would later become Europe. Alongside Augustine, the stories of

two other great saints, Monica and Am-brose, are also portrayed.

This movie is not rated, but was created with an adult audience in mind. It may con-tain intense scenes indicative of the life and times of the saint or character portrayed. We would recommend Parental Guidance and

that parents preview it before watching with children.
