C-Art is Cumbria’s largest visual arts project, awarded ‘Tourism Event of the Year’ at the Cumbria Tourism Awards 2014. This year around 200 artists, designers and independent galleries will open their doors to the public from 13 – 28 September. Co-ordinated by Eden Arts, C-Art promotes and celebrates Cumbria’s abundant creative talent, inviting visitors to step into the gallery and beyond to see art, buy art, explore the landscape and meet the makers.

In addition to the popular open studios and gallery events, this year’s C-Art will feature ‘C-Art in Extraordinary Places’ - artists working in extraordinary locations, a new award for a Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year, and selected Micro-Commissions in the landscape, as well as a host of exhibitions, workshops and associated events.

It’s a perfect time of year to experience Cumbria’s beautiful landscape and to see art situated in some of the UK’s most picturesque towns and villages. See how work is made, talk to artists, watch demonstrations and visit private studios that are usually closed to the public.

Visit the C-Art website for updates and more information: www.c-art.org.uk

Each of the artworks relate to Cumbria’s rural heritage or the tradition of Droving and will form part of Eden Arts’ Winter Droving event in Penrith on 15th November 2014.

Wolves, bison and deer roam the studio, alongside paintings of their habitat. I see the animals as Guardian Spirits, symbols of wilderness, and its loss... meditations on both the resilience and fragility of life. Much of the work references deep time, but recently images of WW1 have appeared; a warning against a certain mind-set and continuing the exploration of pathos and memory. I have exhibited nationally and in several international shows.

My watercolour impressions are inspired by the north west of Cumbria. Though little known by comparison with the Lake District, the quality of light and space on the Solway Firth and the ever changing sky often tempts me out to paint. Working principally in watercolour, I seek to convey my visual delight in the natural world using strong line and colour. Manipulating and co-operating with the liquid relationship between pigment, water and ink, I work quickly in response to the vivid changes in light which define our wonderful Northern landscape, whether it be the Pennines, the Fells, the Galloway Coast or the wilder shores of Donegal.

My imagery is usually graphic and abstract though sometimes strays into the figurative when I draw or print. As a painter and printmaker I work in a variety of media. I’m a designer and bench jeweller, making jewellery in the traditional way, by hand using traditional small tools. I derive a huge amount of satisfaction from constructing something beautiful out of small pieces of metal; the alchemy, the painstaking processes, the attention to detail, it can’t be rushed. Constructing mounts and setting stones are my area of interest. Commissions welcome. Normally based at Cut the Mustard Gallery, Langholm, DG13 0JH.

Oil paintings, collages and woodcut prints characterised by linear repeating motifs, saturated colour, and slabs of decorative patterning. When one pattern meets another, its integrity is disrupted, and a transformative process takes place, undermining the value of a perfect form. Her ritualistic way of working involves creating a structure, based on the rectangular shape of the woodcut block, or canvas, then working within it in an exploratory way, each new work developing from the one that preceded it.

My recent projects have been focused on drawing and painting, particularly developing the language of abstraction. This research includes: expanding the potential of serial composition and the Modernist grid; exploring spatial ambiguity and pictorial illusionism; and examining the relationship of abstract art to design and craft, by using pattern, repetition, and symmetry. I am also interested in testing the claims of expressionism by combining chance and self-reflexive production procedures.

Linda has been creating a portfolio of large panoramic photographs of Cumbria since 1999, questioning people’s need to find psychological space in the Lake District: This evolved from an interdisciplinary fine art degree looking at societies need to ‘evolve to fit,’ in order to survive. Trees are a recurring theme in my work at the moment - they are an integral part of the landscape here. Thirlmere is a favourite spot with its Scots Pine and Larches against the backdrop of Helvellyn. Up on the fells there are Rowan and Silver Birch, Holly and Juniper, self-seeded into nooks and crannies, pioneering life in hard places. //I attempt to interpret these using dyes and hot wax on silk.

Paintings and prints, both big and small, installations and large scale commissioned artworks to fit into specific places.  All these are of things that excite and intrigue me.  They are about line and colour, atmosphere and movement.

Especially for C-Art - there will be a drove of hairy sticks through the park, across the river and into the pub at Keekle, and something lurking in a basement at Cleator Moor Square.

My work invites audiences and participants to enter into conversations that create a social commentary in some way. The dialogue can be recorded in a range of methods; as text alone, as subject and narrative, as site and immediate response or as a selected object. Public events and current issues provide a theatrical element where the musicality of the everyday is explored in a series of site specific interventions.

I remain deeply interested in the process of printmaking, and in how methods such as collagraph and monoprint present their own opportunities and unforeseen paths of investigation. I love creating subtle surfaces on printing plates, mostly by unorthodox, low-tech means, and connecting their printed appearance to the textures I see in the landscapes around me in Cumbria. Sometimes these textures find their way into clay and become a ceramic piece.

My recent oil on canvas paintings are in the old tradition of landscape, and yet are out-of-the-ordinary Cumbrian landscapes. Inspired by The Impressionist Movement, my style is bold and bright, the brushwork energetic. As a former photojournalist, I’m now exploring a relatively peaceful and cathartic environment, such is my response to the landscape where I live and work now. I will also be exhibiting some of my paintings during C-Art at Goosewell Farm, in Keswick.

With natural history the basis of my work I have continued to develop the idea of “landscape moments” concentrating on particular walks and areas, both local and more distant with the Western Isles being great favourites. I am still working to make the most of in camera rather than post-processing manipulation. Perfecting techniques associated with in-camera movement, differential focus and multiple images; also presenting prints in different sizes.

Inspired by the natural landscape of exposed rock faces my weaving work reflects the fault lines and cracks created by the primeval forces of the Earth so long ago. I call the wall hangings ‘Earth Lines’. I use a variety of yarns and weave structures to create texture for my work. More recently I have started working with felt and have used this medium to create seascapes and woodland scenes.

Surrounded by the Cumbrian landscape, it would be surprising if this were not reflected in my images. But a passion for travel also influences the sources for my inspiration. However, I have moved away from a representational photographic style towards a more impressionistic approach, often painterly. And often it is the details in the landscape rather than the broader sweep which capture my attention. Expect the unexpected!

I paint to explore the harmony and balance I find in the world around me. Landscape, seascape, journeys and animals provide my inspiration. I allow images to develop freely in pen, charcoal and oil, painting in the attic studio of my home. I fill my space with the familiar and the dreamlike such as memories of my journey on the sailing ship “Bessie Ellen” up the west coast of Scotland.

Studied at Carlisle College of Art 1956 – 61 Painting N.D.D. From there I gained entry to the R.A Schools graduating Dip R.A.S. 1961 - 64 I have since 1981 concentrated on relief printmaking as the medium where I could best explore my interest in chromatic colour in multiples. Particularly I find interesting the restrictions of the reduction method of making prints. I print with a teaspoon in a registration box.

I am a textile artist, I create silk shibori wall art and accessories. My inspiration comes from the natural world, with subtle but intricate details of plants and flowers reflecting empathetically the textures I create within my work. I use traditional shibori binding techniques and incorporate a modern twist by using the process to add a three dimensional texture to fabrics and the use of digital print to add colour.

I have a passion for working with wood, expressing its natural beauty within a contemporary design. All my timber is locally sourced and is obtained sustainably, for example from fallen or storm damaged trees. My preferred style is ‘minimalist’, using a simple design which allows the wood to express its own qualities. This often includes natural edges, knot-holes, burrs, spalting, and other naturally-occurring imperfections. Each piece is truly unique.

I work with stone, making figurative sculptures based on the human form. At present I am working mostly in Lincoln limestone, Naxos marble and Italian alabaster. All the work is made using traditional hand tools i.e. hammer and chisel. Having grown up in Cumbria, the landscape has been a continuing source of inspiration, and our connectedness with nature is a central theme in the work.
