or the money. But, generosity is

the opposite of that. It means

giving of one’s time, money,

compassion, forgiveness or mercy

at a time that is not convenient to

us; it is when that other person

needs it..

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Ez 34:11-12, 15-17; Ps 23:1-2, 2-3, 5-6;1 Cor 15:20-26, 28; Mt 25:31-46

Today, the last Sunday of the liturgical year, we are celebrating the Solemnity

of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. We know from the Gospels

that Jesus refused the title of king when it was meant in the political sense, by

the standards of the "rulers of the Gentiles" (Mt 20: 25). On the other hand,

during his Passion, he claimed a unique kingship before Pilate, who explicitly

asked him "So you are a king?", and Jesus answered, "You say that I am a

king" (Jn 18: 37); however just previously he had declared, "My kingship is not

of this world" (Jn 18: 36). Christ's kingship is in fact a revelation and actuation

of that of God the Father, who governs all things with love and justice. The

Father entrusted to the Son the mission of giving mankind eternal life by loving

it to the point of supreme sacrifice and, at the same time, conferred upon him

the power of judging humanity, since he made himself Son of man, like us in

all things (cf. Jn 5: 21-22, 26-27).

Today's Gospel insists precisely on the universal kingship of Christ the Judge,

with the stupendous parable of the Last Judgment, which St Matthew placed

immediately before the Passion narrative (25: 31-46). The images are simple,

the language is popular, but the message is extremely important: it is the truth

about our ultimate destiny and about the criterion by which we will be

evaluated. "I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me

drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me" (Mt 25: 35) and so forth. Who

does not know this passage? It is part of our civilization. It has marked the

history of the peoples of Christian culture: the hierarchy of values, the

institutions, the multiple charitable and social organizations. In fact, the

Kingdom of Christ is not of this world, but it brings to fulfilment all the good

that, thank God, exists in man and in history. If we put love for our neighbour

into practice in accordance with the Gospel message, we make room for God's

dominion and his Kingdom is actualized among us. If, instead, each one thinks

only of his or her own interests, the world can only go to ruin.

Dear friends, the Kingdom of God is not a matter of honours and appearances

but, as St Paul writes, it is "righteousness and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit"

(Rm 14: 17). The Lord has our good at heart, that is, that every person should

have life, and that especially the "least" of his children may have access to the

banquet he has prepared for all. Thus he has no use for the forms of hypocrisy

of those who say: "Lord, Lord" and then neglect his commandments (cf. Mt 7:

21). In his eternal Kingdom, God welcomes those who strive day after day to

put his Word into practice. For this reason the Virgin Mary, the humblest of all

creatures, is the greatest in his eyes and sits as Queen at the right of Christ the

King. Let us once again entrust ourselves to her heavenly intercession with

filial trust, to be able to carry out our Christian mission in the world.

Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo Ez 34:11-12, 15-17; Ps 23:1-2, 2-3, 5-6;1 Cor 15:20-26, 28; Mt 25:31-46

Celebramos hoy, último domingo del año litúrgico, la solemnidad de nuestro

Señor Jesucristo, Rey del universo. Sabemos por los Evangelios que Jesús

rechazó el título de rey cuando se entendía en sentido político, al estilo de los

"jefes de las naciones" (cf. Mt 20, 25). En cambio, durante su Pasión,

reivindicó una singular realeza ante Pilato, que lo interrogó

explícitamente: "¿Tú eres rey?", y Jesús respondió: "Sí, como dices, soy rey"

(Jn 18, 37); pero poco antes había declarado: "Mi reino no es de este mundo"

(Jn 18, 36).

En efecto, la realeza de Cristo es revelación y actuación de la de Dios Padre,

que gobierna todas las cosas con amor y con justicia. El Padre encomendó al

Hijo la misión de dar a los hombres la vida eterna, amándolos hasta el supremo

sacrificio y, al mismo tiempo, le otorgó el poder de juzgarlos, desde el

momento que se hizo Hijo del hombre, semejante en todo a nosotros (cf. Jn 5,

21-22. 26-27).

El evangelio de hoy insiste precisamente en la realeza universal de Cristo juez,

con la estupenda parábola del juicio final, que san Mateo colocó

inmediatamente antes del relato de la Pasión (cf. Mt 25, 31-46). Las imágenes

son sencillas, el lenguaje es popular, pero el mensaje es sumamente

importante: es la verdad sobre nuestro destino último y sobre el criterio con el

que seremos juzgados. "Tuve hambre, y me disteis de comer; tuve sed, y me

disteis de beber; era forastero, y me acogisteis" (Mt 25, 35), etc. ¿Quién no

conoce esta página? Forma parte de nuestra civilización. Ha marcado la historia

de los pueblos de cultura cristiana: la jerarquía de valores, las instituciones, las

múltiples obras benéficas y sociales. En efecto, el reino de Cristo no es de este

mundo, pero lleva a cumplimiento todo el bien que, gracias a Dios, existe en el

hombre y en la historia. Si ponemos en práctica el amor a nuestro prójimo,

según el mensaje evangélico, entonces dejamos espacio al señorío de Dios, y su

reino se realiza en medio de nosotros. En cambio, si cada uno piensa sólo en

sus propios intereses, el mundo no puede menos de ir hacia la ruina.

Queridos amigos, el reino de Dios no es una cuestión de honores y de

apariencias; por el contrario, como escribe san Pablo, es "justicia y paz y gozo

en el Espíritu Santo" (Rm 14, 17). Al Señor le importa nuestro bien, es decir,

que todo hombre tenga la vida y que, especialmente sus hijos más "pequeños",

puedan acceder al banquete que ha preparado para todos. Por eso, no soporta

las formas hipócritas de quien dice: "Señor, Señor", y después no cumple sus

mandamientos (cf. Mt 7, 21). En su reino eterno, Dios acoge a los que día a día

se esfuerzan por poner en práctica su palabra. Por eso la Virgen María, la más

humilde de todas las criaturas, es la más grande a sus ojos y se sienta, como

Reina, a la derecha de Cristo Rey. A su intercesión celestial queremos

encomendarnos una vez más con confianza filial, para poder cumplir nuestra

misión cristiana en el mundo.

Somos generosos cuando tenemos

Significa dar tiempo, dinero,

compasión, perdón o misericordia

cuando no es conveniente a

nosotros, si no cuando es la

necesidad del prójimo.
