MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SMITH MARCH 2017
Dearly beloved of Christ the King;
The Lord be with you.
CORNERSTONE
You are dust and unto dust you will return. Those
are words of judgment. They are bitterly harsh and
inescapable words. God spoke those just words. God
spoke those words to Adam and Eve. The crown of
God’s creation had fallen and by their rebellion death
had been unleashed. The first man and the first woman
carried death in their flesh. You are dust and unto dust
you will return.
Man was taken from the dust of the earth. The first
man’s name, Adam, is a derivative of the word for earth
in Hebrew – ‘ad amah’ – meaning ‘from the earth.’
Before the fall, before Adam and Eve ate from the tree
of the knowledge of good and evil, a return to the dust
was unthinkable. Humanity had been created to live.
God breathed into man the breath of life and man
became a living being. That is God’s will – a living a
flourishing humanity.
Countless Christians will hear those bitterly harsh
and inescapable words this month: “You are dust and
unto dust you will return.” Those words are impressed
upon all who gather for Ash Wednesday services which
marks the beginning of the season of Lent. What was
spoken to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is
spoken to us. We too carry death in our sinful flesh.
“The wages of sin is death” and all humanity has earned
well sin’s uncompromising compensation.
Good Friday, at the end of Lent, is the
commemoration of the death and burial of Jesus Christ.
Ash Wednesday, at the beginning of Lent, is the
commemoration of our death and burial. It is an ancient
and salutary custom for the Christian to receive ashes on
the forehead as those bitterly harsh and
uncompromising words are spoken in his ear: “You are
dust and unto dust you shall return.” It is a powerful
symbol that adorns the brow of the believer at the
beginning of Lent. It is a sign of penitence and personal
remorse over sin and unqualified contrition before the
One who speaks justly. But the sign is not merely the
destitute mark of loss captured so well by ashes – the
ashes are applied in the form of a cross.
“’Yet even now’ declares the Lord, ‘return to Me
with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping and with
mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.’
Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and
merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast
love; and He relents over disaster” (Joel 2:12-13).
“Return to Me” is the compelling thrust of Ash
Wednesday and the cross is the symbol of our return.
Return to Me and not to the dust from which you
were taken. The crucifixion of God’s Son has
purchased our return to Paradise. The One who is the
very image of God came to bear the bitterly harsh and
uncompromising judgment of death. “Christ died for
sins, once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to
bring you to God” (1 Peter 3:18). His body did not
return to the dust of the earth, but was raised in glory.
Jesus said: “Because I live, you also will live” (John
14:19). Death does not reign over Him; it shall not
reign over us. “In Christ the fullness of the deity dwells
in bodily form” and in that body, in that crucified flesh,
God was winning your return (Colossians 2:9).
Ash Wednesday (March 1st this year) is one of the
most profoundly significant days in the whole church
year. The sweeping themes of salvation history are in
view as Christians walk toward Easter and the
celebration of Christ’s resurrection. Is it not our desire
to celebrate New Life with true vigor and a profound
sense of renewal? God beckons you unto Himself;
“Return to Me.” On Ash Wednesday the whole
Christian church on earth resonates to that call and
enters a time of self-examination, a time of repentance
and a time of renewal. To our Creator we shall return.
Thanks be to God.
Peace be with you,
Pastor Smith

Once again you have generously supported the Orphan Grain
Train! Forty Hygiene kits were donated and a check for $409.00 was
given to the organization. Steve Rice, coordinator for this area, was
grateful for the money because they are in need of a new truck and
they need money for that. Because of Elysa Torrance, about 200
toothbrushes and almost that many trial size toothpastes were also
donated. She obtained permission to put out a collection box at her school and someone graciously got
those items from Loma Linda and a private dentist. Mr. Rice was grateful for those items also.
