    CEMA Rated Idlers

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which CEMA class do I need?uAccording to CEMA, the main

inuences in selection are beltweight, material weight, load rating, belt sag, idler lie, belt rating and belttension. Its a conusing combinationo data that weve tried to simpliywith our Idler Selector Calculator.Find it in the Quick Links section atsuperior-ind.com.

Which roll diameter do I need?uThe rule o thumb considers belt

speed. At 400 FPM consider a 4idler, 500 FPM is 5, 600 FPM is 6and so on. Its also a act that largerdiameter rolls have longer lives dueto ewer revolutions and thicker shells.

Where can I buy Superior Idlers?uWe have distribution partners with

    Fugitive Material

In the beginning, our plant was stocked by anotherbrand and some o them were lasting just threemonths! We run a lot o wet sand and they werentmaking the cut.

    Seal Power

With other brands, the problems were directlyrelated to bearing ailure. Sand was getting throughthe seals and into the can. I read about Superiorsseal in magazines and now Im witnessing it!

Competitive Comparison Comparing brand to brand, we get three sometimesour times the lie with Superior Idlers. They defnitelyft the bill!

    Moxie Rolls

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are Moxie rolls made from?uTheres a combination o materials

that go into the recipe to developour specially ormulated Moxie rolls.

How thick is the idler shell?uCompared to the rest o the market,

we oer the thickest shell. Our 6diameter rolls are equipped with a1 thick shell while our 5 rolls are1/2 thick.

How is the roller easier on my crews?uWeighing in at more than 40% lighter

than their steel equivalents, Moxierolls are much lighter on the backsand bones o your maintenancecrews. Easier mounting helps preventback injuries, especially in applicationswith suspended belts, difcult toaccess rollers and long conveyors.

    Pizza Cutter

I we didnt catch a worn steel roll in time, the sharppoints would catch the clips, tear them apart andcause a rip all the way down the belt. That is anexpensive problem!

Belt Stress Belts arent all that easy to come by, so the operationwould easily be down a day or more when therewas a big tear. That is a problem at our operationswith round-the-clock load-outs.

    Energy Efciency

The decision to switch to Moxie rolls alone is oneo the biggest keys to our current efciency at thenew wash plant.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are common applications?uI you have problems keeping water

or slurry out o your idler bearings, regreasable idlers are an alternative.Because you are always purging thebearing with grease, water isnt ableto do as much damage.

How often do you regrease?uIt is totally dependent on your

application and so no one answer isaccurate. I you can blame idlerailures on water or slurry damage, regrease more oten. It could be asoten as every day.

How do tapered compare to ball bearings?uAs ball bearing technology has

improved and the cost o maintenancehas increased, ball bearings havesignifcantly replaced tapered roll asthe market standard.

    Self-Aligning Idlers

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why might I need a troughing self-aligner?uThere are many actors that cause

belt mis-tracking, although someonly aect the top side o the belt.Common to radial stackers, o-centerloading causes mis-tracking to thebelts top side. A carry-side, ortroughing sel-aligner will track thebelt straight at every radial position.

Why choose this style?uIt comes down to simple economics.

However, there are also distinctperormance comparisons. TheNavigator return trainer evolved romthe sel-aligner to solve issues withcontact to belt guides.

Why is the belt guide concave shaped?uCompared to a harder, straighter style

guide, the concave shape makes ora soter landing when the side o thebelt contacts the guide.

    How it Works

    Producer Perspective

    Bad Behavior

When our belts misalign they cut into return ramesand can actually cut right through the conveyor. Atthe least, the conveyor catches the belt lacing andrips the side o the belt.

    Pricey Problems

At $15 to $20 a oot and three to our maintenanceworkers, its a pretty expensive situation to changeout a belt and anyway you look at it, its downtime!

    Advanced Alternative

The Navigator return trainer just seems to handlethe belt better than those ones with the side guiderollers. They let the belt travel too ar beore theyeven start doing anything.

    Urathon Return Roll

    Producer Perspective

Balloon Effect Clay sticks to steel like a magnet, causing buildupthat makes the steel rolls almost double in size.

This leads to all kinds o problems!

    Bloating Steel

Some o the steel rolls got so heavy that theystopped rolling. The belt would simply slide acrossthe top o them and potentially end up ripping iyou didnt catch it in time.

    Zero Buildup

These rolls save me time and money and eliminateall the downtime we used to have in change-outs.

There is no reason to look any urther!

    Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a secondary cleaner?

uWhenever the belt is not gettingclean enough with a primary scraperis the simplest answer. Morespecifcally, in applications withsticky, aggressive material whencleaning is absolutely necessary.

What is special about the design?

uBecause conveyor rames are notusually designed to accommodatesecondary cleaners, they arent usuallyinstalled. Sharing one mounting pole, this system allows primary andsecondary cleaning power withoutmodiying a conveyor structure.

Will the system t in my application?uI you have room or a single primary

belt scraper in your application, then you will have plenty o room orthis model. However, the unit will not ftnear a snub pulley, even i that regionis equipped with a primary scraper.

    Deects and Sheds Material

uTraditional Wing:The impact o rocks is directly perpendicular tothe wing, causing material to trap easily.

uChevron Wing: Rocks hit the wings at a glancing blow, deectingugitive material out and away.

    Reduces Wing or Fin Bending

uTraditional Wing: Over time, trapped ugitive material causes wingsto tip or bend. (Fig 16.1)

uChevron Wing: Constant deection prevents entrapment o

    Vibrating Ofce

I would sit in my ofce in the scale house and thewindows would shake. The vibration is gone nowand the only thing we changed were the pulleys!

    Bent Wings

Our old pulleys had wings olding over or evenbreaking o, and they were eating away at the bottomside o the belt. Since then, we have installed closeto 20 Chevron wing pulleys. Even i we a have littlebit o leakage, it spits the rocks out beore theybend the wings.

    Plugged Ears

The noise levels are a night and day dierence. We are in the middle o a city, so to have stoppedthe constant rattling sounds is huge or us.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefts o corrugated?uWhen compared to smooth covers, a

corrugated design is naturallystronger. On its own, each channel(or rib) increases the bendingstrength o the entire cover. So thinko each rib as a little muscle.

Where are the installation supports?uAnother beneft o a corrugated

design is that it allows the cover tobe sel supporting. That means noadditional structure (like supports)is required to hold the cover to theconveyor.

Whats the dierence between standardand optional covers?

uOur standard covers, as defnedin the quick specs above and on theback page, are available orimmediate deliveries. Meanwhile, our optional covers and accessoriesare built to order.
