The Cougars are 30-5 overall against the Aggies, including 12-2 at home and 2-0 in the NCAA Tournament. BYU defeated NM State 3-0 in the first round of both the 2003 and 2012 tournaments. The Cougars have won their last six matches against the Aggies dating back to 1989. BYU is 73-28 all-time against Utah, including 39-10 at home and 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars have won four straight over the Utes, including a 3-1 win in Salt Lake City this past September and a sweep in the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament in Provo. BYU is 3-3 all-time against Illinois, including 1-2 at home. The Illini have won the last three matchups in 2002, 2010 and 2011 while the Cougars took the first three in 1971, 1987 and 1988. The Cougars are making their eighth-straight tournament appearance and have been seeded in six of those seasons. BYU has made at least the Sweet 16 each of the previous seven years, including a national semifinal finish in 2018 and a national title game in 2014. Since defeating Houston 3-0 in a first round match in 1995, BYU has won 21-straight NCAA Tournament home matches over the last 25 years. The streak is currently third-longest in the nation by wins and the longest by number of years: Texas is on a 37-match win streak dating to 2007 and Penn State is on a 34-match streak since 2006. During the streak, BYU has won 63 of 67 sets with sweeps in 17 matches. BYU’s four losses this year all came against ranked teams that are in this year’s tournament, including No. 2 seed Texas, Marquette and San Diego. The Cougars also have wins over No. 3 seed Stanford, Utah and VCU. Senior McKenna Miller was named WCC Player of the Year and senior Mary Lake was named WCC Libero of the Year this week. The duo joined junior Kennedy Eschenberg, sophomore Heather Gneiting and freshman Whitney Bower on the All-WCC First Team. Bower and Kate Grimmer were also named to the All-Freshman Team. Mary Lake set the BYU all-time record for career digs at Santa Clara on Nov. 7, finishing with a season-high 21 digs in the win. She was named the WCC Player of the Week for her efforts. The U.S. Senior National Team member and All-American currently has 1,834 career digs. BYU is 11th nationally in average home attendance at 2,704. COACHING FAMILY TREEHead coach Heather Olmstead comes from a family of volleyball coaches. Her father, Rick, is a well-known high school and club coach in California who coached U.S. star and current National Team head coach Karch Kiraly at Santa Barbara High.

Heather’s sister, Laci, played setter for the Cougars from 1994-95.

Heather’s brother, Shawn, has been the BYU men’s volleyball coach the last four seasons, winning three MPSF titles. Previously, Shawn and Heather worked together on the women’s team for four seasons with Shawn as head coach, helping BYU to two conference titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a 2014 national runner-up finish.

ALL-TIME GREAT COACHESThree BYU coaches are found among the winningest in the history of NCAA women’s volleyball. BYU is the only program with three coaches with an .800 or higher career winning percentage:

Elaine Michaelis (886-219-5, .800) is ninth in NCAA history in career win percentage and 10th in career victories after coaching from 1969-01. When she retired, Michaelis was second on the career victories list and first among any woman in collegiate volleyball. She is an AVCA Founders Award and USA Volleyball All-Time Great Coach honoree. The Cougars’ home court is also named after her.

Shawn Olmstead (103-25, .805) is 17th in NCAA history in career win percentage among coaches with four or more seasons. The 2014 AVCA National Coach of the Year, Olmstead led BYU to its first national title game that same season. He now coaches the BYU men’s volleyball team.

Heather Olmstead (143-17, .894) is the third-fastest Division I women’s volleyball coach in history to reach 100 wins, doing so in just 111 matches. The 2018 AVCA National Coach of the Year, Olmstead currently holds the highest winning percentage of any women’s volleyball coach in NCAA Division I history (min. one season) and second-highest in any division (min. three seasons).

NCAA TOURNEY REGULARS• BYU has appeared in 32 of 39 NCAA postseason

times since the tournament began in 1981, including each of the last eight seasons since 2012.

• The Cougars have qualified for the Sweet 16 or better each of the last seven seasons and each of their last eight appearances

• BYU’s Final Four appearance last season was the Cougars’ third in the national semifinal, including 1993 and a national championship game appearance in 2014
