Welcome Back WELCOME BACK to our wonderful school. I hope you all had a relaxing break and the students have returned to school keen to learn. Our school motto is, I Aspire, I Achieveand we believe in excellence, opportunity and success. Our core values are based on being respectful, responsible and fair. In order to provide the highest quality education for every student it is essential that we all, staff, parents, students and community members, continue to work together in a supportive, collaborative partnership based on mutual respect. We are fortunate to have a great school community. 2020 promises to be another wonderful year at BBPS with many exciting programs and activities planned for the students throughout the year. It s an absolute pleasure to be Principal of such a great school. A Great Start to the Year It has been a very enjoyable experience to walk around the school and see so many smiling faces in the playground. The look of absolute delight and sheer pleasure will long be remembered as the students went out to play on the new turf in the back playground. It was obvious that the boys and girls loved their new playground and were happy to be back at school. I was very impressed, they were all in school uniform and wearing it with pride. They look fantastic. Congratulations on making such a great start to the year. Welcome Kindergarten A BIG, warm welcome is extended to our 84 Kindergarten students who came in for their PLAN assessments during the last week. They started in class today and it was pleasing to meet up with some of their parents for Cheers and Tears. Welcome to Our New Families On behalf of the staff, students and parents, I would also like to extend a warm welcome to the students and their families who are new to our school community. I encourage you to join the P&C, volunteer in the canteen and to offer your support in the classroom, where possible. Please look out for our new families and make them feel welcome. School Swimming Carnival – Friday 7 February The school Swimming Carnival will take place on Friday 7 February. The carnival is for students 8 years and older. All students are to arrive at school as normal, with the exception of students competing in the Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle events. These students are required to be at the pool by 9.00am. Teachers will mark the roll at school before walking the children to the pool. Students will return to school before 3.15pm and go home as normal. Students will be representing their sport house and should wear their house colours. If you wish to purchase a sports uniform, you can do so at www.flexischools.com.au or at the uniform shop on Monday morning between 8.30 - 10.30am. Cost for the carnival for children is $5.00. For students who hold a season pass, the cost is $2.00. For spectators the cost is $3.00. Parents wishing to take their children directly from the pool are required to have their names marked off at the recording desk before leaving the carnival. Online only canteen lunch orders will be available on this day. Lunches will be delivered to the pool around 12.00 – 12.30pm. No pick-up items will be available, eg frozen items, slushies, custard cups etc. Fish Heads will also be open for students to purchase food and drink items. Students need to return their signed permission notes with $5.00 pool entry or pool pass number and $2.00 to their class teacher by Wednesday, 5 February. Students who do not return their permission note will NOT be allowed to attend the carnival. Caring and dedicated teachers I would like to thank staff who spent a considerable amount of time at school during the holidays and also staff who spent time working from home on plans, programs and organisation for 2020. We are fortunate to have very professional, caring, dedicated staff. Staff Professional Learning On the School Development Days, professional learning was provided on Visible Learning and Learning Sprints, along with future direc- tions in relation to our School Plan 2018-20. Many thanks to the parents for keeping the boys and girls at home on the School Develop- ment Days at both the end of last year and the beginning of this year, it was very much appreciated. Mrs Donna Wooldridge has been permanently appointed as a SAO in the front office. Mrs Ebony Browning and her husband Damien welcomed a beautiful baby girl. Mr Zane Vockler has taken a position at Bilambil Public School. Both Mr McIntyre and Mr Vockler will be missed and we wish them all the very best in their new ventures.

Class Formation, Parent Requests and Composite Classes Student numbers in each grade dictate whether or not we will have composite classes. We have no control over student numbers in each grade. This year our numbers indicated that we need to have only one composite class which is 5/6A. There should be no educational disadvantage to students being in a composite class as teachers are accustomed to differentiating their teaching to suit student needs. In straight classes, consisting of only students in the same grade, there is a considerable spread of abilities with students achieving above, below and at grade level. The same can be said of composite classes. Students in composite classes participate in stage assemblies, sport and excursions with the rest of the grade. They also work towards achieving the same outcomes.

For some reason, quite a few parents are under the misapprehension that they can choose their child’s teacher, this is not the case. The teachers decide which class students go into. Classrooms are for learning and friends will always be outside in the playground to play with.

Please do not approach staff asking for your child to be moved to another class, as this will not be happening. Staff have spent considerable time and effort forming classes based on the overall needs of 644 students.

While it is normal for some students to feel anxious about a new teacher and friends, we know from experience that in a week or two’s time, they will be happier, have found new friends and be ready for a productive year of learning. Changing classes and classmates each year strengthens students’ social development and gives them the opportunity to sort and choose friends wisely.

Thank you for your patience whilst students were in temporary classes, it is very much appreciated. The classes are now permanent.

Parents and Citizens Meeting Everyone is welcome to attend our P&C meetings which are held monthly. The first meeting for the year is on next Thursday 13 February at 6.00pm. The P&C AGM will be held on Thursday 12 March at 6.00pm. All meetings are held in the staffroom. The meetings are only for parents, not students. If you need child minding organised, please phone the school before hand, no later than midday and this

can be organised. Bring a friend along and support your school, we would love to see some new faces.

School Contributions and Book Packs Our annual voluntary school contribution is $55 per student. The voluntary school contribution covers student subscriptions to online learning programs, including Mathletics and Reading Eggs, the bus to both Cross Country and Athletics carnivals, as well as a small voluntary contribution to enhance classroom resources. Schools can request contributions to enhance their education programs. The payment of a school contribution which provides additional educational resources for the benefit of all students is voluntary. The school will ensure that no student or family suffers any discrimination or embarrassment over the payment of voluntary school contributions. All students will have access to the school curriculum. The book pack fee is $57 and it is separate to the voluntary contributions and it will ensure every student has all the basic educational supplies and stationery for their classroom. Payments are accepted at the front office or online through the school website at www.byronbay-p.schools.nsw.edu.au. Parents who are unable to pay for book packs because of financial hardship, will be eligible for assistance through the school assistance program. If you need assistance with meeting the cost of student book packs, excursions or performance costs, please ask for the Student Assistance paperwork at the office or give us a call and we will send it home to you.

Until next time, Linda Trigg Principal
