Meeting Dates

Thursday 18 February
Thank You FRANKLAND CWA
Last year was a very busy and exciting year for our
group. Winning all the main trophies in the Craft
Competition of the southern CWA’s being our biggest
achievement.
This year also promises to be exciting as it will be 60
years since Frankland CWA first began. With this in
mind we are hoping for some new members to join to
keep it going as CWA does achieve a lot behind the
scenes with the Government in legal, health, transport,
road safety, social service assistance, rural issues,
communication and so it goes on.
Would you like to have a say on issues you feel the
Government should be looking into, if so join CWA.
Shelters provided in school yards for children might
seem a small issue but its just one of the things CWA
got the Government to implement.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the
Frankland River Hall on Thursday 11 February at
10.00am. Ladies think about joining - love to see you
there.
Shirley Williams 9826 8009
Thank you to everyone who attended the fire
on our farms at Rocky Gully on the
2nd January 2016.
We are very appreciative of all your efforts
during and after the fire.
Ian and Alanna Higgins
Jim and Pina McCully
We had a messy fire here on our farm in
Mobrup recently, that a lot of Frankland
people attended. As we don’t know all the
people who turned up and gave assistance
we couldn’t begin to contact everyone to
extend our appreciation and thanks. So a
huge thank you to everyone your quick
response and support are greatly
appreciated.
Erin and Kelly
Farewell to Father Brown
Father Brown has been transferred to another diocese
starting on 1 February so anyone wishing to say farewell
to Father John, a luncheon will be held in Mt. Barker at
11.30am following the 10.30am mass on Sunday 31st
January at the school building next to the Catholic
Church house.
Ladies if possible could you please bring a plate of
finger food to share.
Anyone from Frankland River and Cranbrook who
wishes to attend will be welcome.
Shirley Williams 9826 8009

Telehealth gives birth to
new service for parents
Free childbirth education and parenting classes via
telehealth
Classes may be done at home via videoconference
Program to run throughout the Great Southern
from early February 2016
A new service established as part of the State
Government's telehealth initiative will mean expectant
parents in the Great Southern can access free antenatal
education classes via video link.
Pregnant mothers and their partners are invited to join a
short series of antenatal and birth preparation classes,
which will be beamed to their homes via secure
videoconferencing software or they can link in at their
local telehealth service.
Health Minister Kim Hames said using telehealth to
deliver important education classes to expectant parents
would potentially reduce the amount of travel required
during pregnancy, and hopefully increase the number of
people participating in important educational classes.
"It is hoped the antenatal education telehealth service
will give expectant parents peace of mind to know they
can access information to help them prepare for
parenthood from even the most remote locations," Dr
Hames said.
Participants with good internet access and speed may be
able to attend the classes from home, while others can
attend at their nearest telehealth venue.
The service has been made possible by the State
Government's Royalties for Regions program and the
Southern Inland Health Initiative as part of the Maternal
Health Improvement Program.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the
provision of appropriate health care services was
essential to the long-term sustainability of regional
communities.
"Pregnancy and childbirth are incredible milestones and
we want to ensure people living in regional and remote
areas have the same level of access to the services as
their metropolitan counterparts," Mr Redman said.
"The Royalties for Regions investment in telehealth
services greatly improves access to quality health care. I
am proud to see the Southern Inland Health Initiative
delivering the Maternal Health Improvement Program
and other innovative models of health care in regional
WA."
• The service will start in the Great Southern in early
February 2016. Expectant parents interested in
participating in the program can contact 9842 7546 for
further information
• The additional telehealth service is one of several
projects under way to enhance antenatal and postnatal
care throughout the Great Southern and Wheatbelt
regions
• Those who participate from their homes will be guided
to download videoconferencing software, Scopia, and
provided with a secure reference number to access the
classes
Please contact the Frankland River CRC if you wish
to participate via Videoconferencing at the
Community Resource Centre. Phone 9855 2310

New Project Officers Start at
The Blackwood Basin Group The Priority Bittern and Waterbird Biodiversity
Enhancement Project, coordinated by the Blackwood
Basin Group (BBG), has some changes in store.
The four year project, funded by the Australian
Government, aims to create a wetland haven at
Schwenke’s Dam, Greenbushes, to attract critically
endangered waterbirds.
New Project Officers
Two new project officers have joined our team.
Margaret Jakobson and Kristen Mappin recently started
at the Blackwood Basin Group to help continue the
wonderful progress made on the wetlands around
Greenbushes.
Margaret is an Environmental Scientist and
Entomologist who has been working with us as a
volunteer with the macroinvertebrate group for the last
two years. She has experience with working with
community groups to achieve goals such as setting up a
cooperative pest management group and managing a
community run. Margaret says “I am most looking
forward to working with the community in an area that I
am passionate about.”
Kristen has a background in Botany and community
based conservation. She shall be managing the on
ground works of the project such as weed and pest
control, flora surveys and rehabilitation plantings. One
of her first tasks is the development of a cockatoo
workshop and feral fox control programs. Kristen says
“I feel very privileged to have discovered a project that
is local and using my expertise. I am looking forward to
working on the project and developing my knowledge as
the project continues to grow.”
This project is supported by the Blackwood Basin
Group, through funding from the
Australian Government.
