Week St Mary Bonaventures Women’s Institute
"It Shouldn't happen to a Home Economist-but it generally has"
So said Sian Fox who was our guest speaker on October 14th.
Having been pretty rubbish at Latin etc. at school, she found her niche in
the Domestic Science lab.
(I remember the cookery sessions at school. Roll Mop herrings are the
things of nightmares. Never to be seen in my own home kitchen).
Sian studied for "O" then "A" levels with great success and then studied
for a degree at Bath University where alumni such as Mary Berry was a
student.
Having successfully gained a degree, Sian had a spell of working in an
Officers' Club, then a police station, which had the original old cells,
which just happened to be housing a number of racoons at the time that
had arrived with a consignment of bananas. An animal health officer
there asked her as to what they ate and fortunately, as it turned out,
they like bananas. This fact was endorsed by the local zoo.
Later, as a stop-at-home mum, Sian became bored and wanted to bake
which led her to London and a job interview with Sainsbury and resulted
in her working for them for over 20 years in a variety of roles; getting to
know the customers as many chatted when shopping in the store.
A well-dressed, well-spoken regular female shopper once surprisingly
confessed that her husband beat her.
Offering customers a taste of a certain dog food one day, if interested,
must have come as a surprise to many. Not something I'd be prepared to
sample but at least it showed confidence in the quality, I guess.
Being asked to travel from store-to-store with a large prop- a 6ft tall
toothbrush- in a small car led to some challenging moments and giving a
cooking display of how to cook a creme brulee caused a stir as a sensitive
smoke detector sited directly above her alerted the local fire brigade
who arrived in force.
Over the years, Sian gave professional cookery demonstrations at Events
and National Shows such as The Devon County Show and was surprised
to learn that HRH Sophie Wessex was to pay a visit sometime and who
later declared that... " The Problem with children is that they don't eat
enough venison!" Can't argue with that.
Meeting the Calendar Girls (famous for their nude poses for a WI
calendar to raise funds for charity) was on the occasion of Sainsbury

Lesley Booker
launching a "new jams" campaign and was a highlight of her career.
Sian got to know the ladies well. On one particular train journey the
passengers applauded them all and donated money. The chef in the
buffet car greeted them wearing nothing but his apron!
Sian met regularly with well-known TV chef, Jamie Oliver, who is
associated with Sainsbury, and who worked on a campaign named "Feed
me Better" where he strived to improve the quality, taste and nutrition
of school dinners. A sadly much-needed exercise as one 8 year old girl on
opening her lunch box revealed -a packet of crisps, a Mars Bar and a can
of Red Bull! Nowadays Sian best enjoys giving talks to WI groups around
the country on Zoom, at present, but very fondly remembers her days
when she stood over a cooker, sometimes smiling at a TV camera whilst
cooking up a storm.
Our next speaker is on Thursday 11th November at 7:30pm and
will be the Cornwall Blood Bikes in the Methodist School Room,
all are welcome.

ADVENTURE CHURCHAfter such a long time away from the church due to Covid it has been a
pleasure to welcome the “Adventure Church Children” back to their
Tuesday afternoon meeting.
There have been a few sunny days to allow us to enjoy outdoor activities.
After sharing each week in a short bible story the children have taken part
in the following activities…..
Noah comes out of “lockdown” where they made leaf animals which were
released in a Week St Mary Garden.
Wild clay faces, where they put a clay on a tree trunk and had to use their
imagination with leaves and twigs or whatever they could find to turn the
clay into wonderful faces.
Yoga in the St Johns Chapel with Amy, I think we all learnt a trick…. If
you have to stand on one foot and your balance is not 100%, put a finger
on the end of your nose!!!
Weaving with nature, Card with string on which then the children could
weave into grass, flowers and greenery to make wonderful pictures.
A visit to “The Wyldes” to go on a treasure hunt to find specific items
listed on a chart then make them into a picture. Followed by a picnic even
though it was the middle of October.
Then the obligatory “Pumpkin” carving without the need for even one
plaster or bandage. 18 children took part in this with parental help and
created some wonderful faces.
The children have enjoyed a shared tea each week, from hot dogs, picnics,
soup with some Harvest bread, sandwiches and even jacket potatoes.
Each week there is either cake to enjoy, fruit or pudding.
Without the children none of us would have such fun and its definitely
“TEAM WORK”
If anyone is interested in this each week in term time request to join Week
St Mary Adventure Church Facebook page where you will be accepted
and can then see what activity there will be coming up.

Over 10 years ago, I raised money for a bench seat to beplaced down ‘Back Lane’ in Week St Mary.
This was in memory of a very dear friend to the village,Lawrence Denner, who was known as the gentle giant.
On Friday evening the 8th October this bench seat was
vandalised beyond repair.
Therefore, once again I have decided to raise money againfor a replacement bench seat.
This collection bucket will be placed in the shop with the kindpermission of Jackie, from the middle of November.
Donations would be greatly appreciated.

THE COUNTRYMEN.
A huge thank you to everyone who supported this very popularevent. We may have been through a very long pandemic but at
last we felt able to host this group for the third time.Without a lot of help we would not have had such a successful
evening….. from warming pasties, putting up flags and the lights(especially around the “toilet”) even down to the clearing up
the next day.You all know who you are and we thank each one of you.
The main sponsor was Tintagel Brewery donating a barrel of beerand Polmorla Pasties in Kings Hill Industrial Estate Bude for a
generous discount on the pasties. All the raffle prizes were donated as well.
We are in negotiations for next Autumn as so many have asked ifthey can come back again. It was lovely to see so many in Churchespecially those who may have come for the first time, what better
venue and acoustics than our lofty church.
SO WATCH THIS SPACE FOR A DATE…………….

Autumn. That time of year when the vibrant colourof summer turns to browns, reds, and fiery yellows. We have celebrated a season of harvest; a season offruitfulness that seeded generosity to ourcommunity in the many gifts of food and drinks.
Now as we progress through Autumn the longerdays are becoming notably shorter, darknessreplaces light, and trees release their leaves to theground. Autumn has that feeling of life letting go.There is a theme of dying in the autumn, we seethis as trees lose their vigorous life of summer, theirleaves return to the ground. In that we find aseason of remembrance upon us; All Souls’ dayremembers our loved ones departed, RemembranceSunday remembers the sacrifice made for so manyby so few and continues to do so. Both give us anopportunity to reflect and remember the fragility ofa God-given life.
Autumn is a curious time of celebration and loss, theloss of warmth, rich foliage, colourful flowers, cropfilled fields and of course light. But nature remindsus that the letting go is for a reason. All the harvestproduce is made up of what the earth has releasedfor us. It is perhaps the deciduous trees that aremost articulate about one of the greatest messagesAutumn has to offer. Watch those fluttering leavesfall and become humus. That humus sinks down andbecomes the earth around those slender roots that

The biblical scholar Brueggemann wrote ‘only griefpermits newness.’ If he is right, and if we wantspringtime newness in our souls we must learn togrieve well. The autumns that come our way nearlyalways involve some kind of grieving, and when thisis well done then space is created for newpossibilities.
In this time of curiosity, space, and possibility, wefind the approach of Advent, new life and lightentering the darkness and the darkness no longerovercomes it.
