Layered Zirconia - Mixing Porcelain and Zirconia

Whether you’re considering Layered or Full Solid Zirconia or already using it for your dental practice, it’s

important to understand how Zirconia works. Kindly use this section to find answers to frequently asked

questions.

What is Zirconia and how does it work?

Zirconia crown is composed of zirconium- a heavy-duty, biocompatible substance which is also used by

surgeons in their patient’s artificial joints. It is a popular, type of all-ceramic crown which radically improves

the aesthetic appearance of a disfigured or stained tooth.

Advantages of zirconia crown/bridge

Zirconia is quickly growing as the ideal material for dental crowns. It is a heavy-duty material that endures

every day use. Aesthetically speaking, it is almost invisible and unidentifiable with natural tooth because of its

translucent feature, which reflects light in a very similar way.

The aesthetic effect of Zirconia makes it the material of choice especially if the new crowns are to be at the

front of your patient’s mouth. Patients whose crowns will be seen next to natural teeth should choose

Zirconium instead of PFM’s.

Top features:

! Computer-aided design

! Conventional cementation

! Exact precision fit

! Excellent bond strength

! Flexural strength which withstands every day mastication

! No color variations. It uses new unique coloring technology to look natural

! No graying, no metal margins

! No metal substructure looks more natural than PFM’s.

! Thinner coping that encourages flexibility

! Traditional bonding techniques

! No Metal fuse

! Adjustable color, shape and size

Zirconia crown benefits

It is an ideal cover up for tooth damage and stains and encourages the restoration of teeth because of the

following reasons:

Strong and durable: Zirconia is indestructible. It is long lasting, easy to wear and endures everyday use unlike

other types of crown.

Invisible: It is hard to spot Zirconia crown among natural teeth. It blends well with your natural teeth color and

thus gives better appearance than other crowns/bridges.

Aesthetic appearance: The strong ceramic materials used in the crown prevent corrosion and the appearance of

black gum line usually seen in PFM’s.

Hypoallergenic: It is a safe option for patients who develop allergic reactions to porcelain fused to metal

crowns because patients are least likely to develop allergic reactions to zirconia. The body does not reject it

that’s why it is popularly called as “Non-allergic crown”. Your body accepts zirconium as a natural substance

while it metal alloys and Amalgam Fillings.

Restores tooth function. It leaves the original tooth substance almost untouched. The procedure requires

minimal tooth preparation which comes in handy when removing the crown.

No electrical conductivity. You will not feel hot and cold sensations which may be present in other crowns.

Mixing porcelain and Zirconia

Full Porcelain may easily chip or break. Thus, it is advisable to make the crown from the Zirconia framework,

and then fuse the porcelain to the outer surface. While the porcelain gives the aesthetic outward appearance of a

normal tooth, zirconia framework gives it the strength and durability.

Is Zirconia an ideal base for porcelain?

Yes. Porcelain and zirconium’s bonding process is comparatively better than porcelain and gold. Thus, the

porcelain does not fracture away from its zirconia base.
